…the policy then states that anyone who is non-white — regardless of age, health or underlying medical conditions — is automatically deemed to have met the requirement that one must have “a medical condition or other factors that increase their risk for severe illness” in order to receive this treatment (“Non-white race or Hispanic/Latino ethnicity should be considered a risk factor.”). That means that a healthy twenty-year-old Asian football player or a 17-year-old African-American marathon runner from a wealthy family will be automatically deemed at heightened risk to develop serious COVID illness — making them instantly eligible for monoclonal treatments upon testing positive and showing symptoms — while a White person of exactly the same age and health condition from an impoverished background would not be automatically eligible.

The immense popularity of overstating one’s personal risk from Covid, and of structuring one’s whole life around that exaggerated risk, can’t be explained in logical terms. It can only be understood with the animal logic of the force that dictates the living conditions of our entire elite class: their competition against each other.

Bogost’s piece is an absolute classic, maybe the classic, in a particularly strange form of worry porn that progressives have become addicted to in the past half-decade. It’s this thing where they insist that they don’t want something to happen, but they describe it so lustily, imagine it so vividly, fixate on it so relentlessly, that it’s abundantly clear that a deep part of them wants it to happen. This was a constant experience in the Trump era – liberals would imagine that Trump was about to dissolve Congress and declare himself emperor, they’d ostensibly be opposed to such a thing, but they were so immensely invested in the seriousness and accuracy of such predictions that they’d clearly prefer for it to happen. I wrote about Chris Hayes and his bitter yearning for Trump last week, and he’s a good example, someone who ruminates on Trump and the dystopian future he might bring about with such palpable emotional pathology that it’s clear that, on some level, he needs it to happen, so that he can say “I was right.” And so with Bogost here; that level of anxious catastrophizing always carries with it the quiet, throbbing need for the bad dream to come true. Covid is already bad, very bad. I am always so confused that so many people seem desperately to want it to be worse.

In public, Anthony Fauci and Francis Collins urge Americans to “follow the science.” In private, the two sainted public-health officials schemed to quash dissenting views from top scientists. That’s the troubling but fair conclusion from emails obtained recently via the Freedom of Information Act by the American Institute for Economic Research.

The tale unfolded in October 2020 after the launch of the Great Barrington Declaration, a statement by Harvard’s Martin Kulldorff, Oxford’s Sunetra Gupta and Stanford’s Jay Bhattacharya against blanket pandemic lockdowns. They favored a policy of what they called “focused protection” of high-risk populations such as the elderly or those with medical conditions. These researchers weren’t fringe and neither was their opposition to quarantining society. But in the panic over the virus, these two voices of science used their authority to stigmatize dissenters and crush debate. A week after his email, Dr. Collins spoke to the Washington Post about the Great Barrington Declaration. “This is a fringe component of epidemiology,” he said. “This is not mainstream science. It’s dangerous.” His message spread and the alternative strategy was dismissed in most precincts.

Dr. Fauci replied to Dr. Collins that the takedown was underway. An article in Wired, a tech-news site, denied there was any scientific divide and argued lockdowns were a straw man—they weren’t coming back. If only it were true. The next month cases rose and restrictions returned.

Context IS important. The turd was lamenting the fact that including the notwithstanding clause into the constitution was “a political calculation” on the part of his father. This whole discussion was precipitated by the Muslim teacher in Chelsea Quebec being removed because she was wearing a hijab.

I’ll remind everyone that this is the guy drawing up legislation to regulate our speech on the internet, who has forced healthy Canadians into “quarantine” hotels against their will. I don’t think context matters in his case, unless one wants to frame the remarks in the only way one can — as sanctimonious hypocrisy. Read it any way you please. It’s what he believes, notwithstanding clause notwithstanding.

And an email seen by the Mirror shows organisers had planned days in advance for some staff to enjoy the quiz in person, from the office.

The Mirror revealed on Sunday that the Prime Minister had helped host the quiz – and that some staff had spent the evening huddling and conferring around their office computers rather than dialling in from home.

Sources said staff had knocked back fizz, wine and beer – and some stayed in Number 10 socialising and drinking for hours after the quiz finished at 9.30pm.

London was then under Tier 2 regulations banning any social mixing between households.

Official guidance also stated: “You must not have a work Christmas lunch or party, where that is a primarily social activity and is not otherwise permitted by the rules in your tier.”

Number 10 has insisted the event, held on December 15 2020, was a “virtual quiz”, but admitted “those who were in the office for work may have attended virtually from their desks.”

As I remarked a couple of weeks ago, I thought I had done writing about COVID. Surely, I thought, the hysteria is on the wane. Most people are rational. They know that the flimsy porous masks you see everywhere are useless tokens of conformity. They understand that the disease is serious for only a tiny part of the population. They also know staying home and practicing “social distancing” has its own liabilities, not least of which is a diminution in the potency of one’s immune response.

Unfortunately, the people making the rules are not “most people.” They are bureaucrats being advised by public health “experts” like Anthony Fauci who has demonstrated ostentatious incompetence at least since the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. When news of the so-called Omicron variant first surfaced a few weeks back, I assumed the fact that doctors first described it as very contagious but also with symptoms that were “very mild,” meant the “experts” would let us get on with our lives.

Fat chance.

The full effect of lingering pandemic-related food supply chain disruptions, high inflation, labour and transportation issues, climate change and extreme weather events on next year’s grocery bills remains to be seen. But according to Canada’s Food Price Report 2022, they will only get higher.

In the latest edition of the annual report, Dalhousie University, University of Guelph, University of Saskatchewan and University of British Columbia researchers forecast a five to seven per cent increase in food prices — the highest in its 12-year history.

A family of four is expected to spend as much as $14,767 in 2022: up to $966 more than 2021, which amounts to an extra $80 a month and $20 a week.

“2022 will likely be a very difficult year for most Canadian families, unfortunately, because prices are going to rise significantly,” says Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, director of Dalhousie University’s Agri-Food Analytics Lab (AAL) and lead author of the report. “Canadians will have to accept the fact that they are going to have to dedicate a greater portion of their overall budget to food.”

Well, some of them voted for it.
