Deliberately choosing to pay more than you need to for inputs doesn’t make your province richer; the reality is quite the opposite. My guess is that the “buy local” gambit is going to be used not only as an excuse to shut out American suppliers but suppliers in other provinces as well. In any case, there’s no way a few sales to the Quebec government can replace the losses from being unable to sell into a market ten times the size of Canada’s.
The Quebec government has announced a series of measures to promote buying locally in response to the escalating trade war between Canada and the United States.
Premier Christine Fréchette says the measures will inject about $1.5 billion into the Quebec economy in the next four months.

I fully support Quebecers buying from Quebec. I also fully support not selling anything to them or purchasing any of their crap from them. That province is the single most economically destructive and politically divisive entity I can think of. Forget the US or China or anywhere else, boycott Quebec.
Unfortunately, if you are Canadian outside of Quebec, you are probably subsidizing Quebec whether you want to or not.
I agree with everything you said except “probably”. I live in a completely Anglo area, yet the provincial and local government offers services in French, which nobody needs, that costs real money, not to mention preferential hiring for idiots based upon knowing French, a dead language which will be as extinct as Latin in 50 years. There is way more, and way too much demand for Punjabi.
I said probably because I don’t know everyone’s tax situation…
Every time we buy a Canadian made packaged product we are paying extra for the dual language label and pandering to Quebec. Even products only sold in Canada with only one type of label, no changeovers on the line will cost a little bit more. If a product is sold in the US as well, then there’s the cost of dual inventory, stopping production for a changeover, it’s more pain than we think.
Except for the Maritimes, Liberal stronghold that contribute next to nothing to the economy and mooch harder per capita on the Federal teat. I’ll give them that though, they are quiet about it.
It’s hard to speak when your mouth is full.
I do live in Alberta, after all, so yes, I do subsidize Quebec whether I want to or not. However, I have long had lists of preferred sources for items I buy (if I can, sorry, an Albertan ripoff is still a ripoff after all) and “Fabrique en Quebec” will drop an item down to Bangladesh and the Congo in my mind.
The best example of that is paying ~$12 million per rail car in Northern Ontario and Quebec, for cars that should only cost $3 to $4 million.
And don’t worry, they’ll probably include lots of minimally processed chinesium steel.
Can you elaborate on that, JD? Not something I’ve heard about.

Of the $4.7 billion, $4 billion is for the cars, and $700 million is for maintenance for many years.
$4,000,000,000 / 313 = $12,779,552 per car
Compare with:
ÖBB’s Next Generation Nightjet @ About €2.9–3.2 million per carriage on average.
Caledonia Sleeper train was €175 million for 75 new cars
Trenitalia order 70 mixed coaches for 138.59 million EUR
Amtrak is also tendering for 800 units with the award coming in late 2027 for 2030 delivery, I would bet they aren’t going to be $12 million per coach
Meanwhile, in the real world (thanks Copilot) …
“In the first quarter of 2026, Quebec’s real GDP increased by 0.3% from the previous quarter, translating to an annualized growth rate of 1.3%. This growth was primarily driven by a $1.3 billion increase in inventory investment, particularly in gold and manufacturing inventories, which offset declines in other components such as final consumption expenditure, gross fixed capital formation, and the foreign trade balance. Exports fell by 0.9%, while imports rose slightly by 0.1%, negatively impacting the trade balance. Household consumption decreased marginally by 0.1%”.
The inflation rate is 3.0% so Quebec’s economy is shrinking. Plus “inventory investment” … what the heck is that? Stock-piling things you aren’t selling?
Conceit: a mosquito lying on his back floating down the creek yelling, “Raise the drawbridge!!!”
That is Kanada.
Also, we are going to experience the fall that pride causes.
Go for it, you silly talking Marxists.
You’re already inbreeding.
You got your tense wrong, should be “You are already inbred”.
Which is why they are Marxist, and stupid, but I repeat myself, and why they will continue having it on with their sisters.
It is actually worse than you might think: when government “injects” money into an economy, that money comes from the taxpayers to begin with. So it’s a financial equivalent of a circular firing squad with the exception that all the ammunition is being borrowed from the future because all of these governments are running current account deficits.
Those monies Are in a real sense imaginary because government has to borrow them, and since they can’t actually repay them, the Net affect will be felt as dilution of the dollars value across the country. In effect it is a tax on the future.
Exactly right.
They will inject $1.5B into the economy by taking at least $3.0B out of it via a toxic combination of taxes and inefficiency.
Dear Quebec; So which side is refusing negotiation? Doesn’t sound too reasonable of you.
But “Its Trump’s Fault”..Bad Orange Man,with his fabulous time machine, who made the majority of Canadians fiscally illiterate..
Bad Orange Man..

Alberta.Saskatchewan and Northern BC must declare their independence from Can Ahh Duh,it is the only way to give our children a civilized future.
And the only other way,to return Can Ahh Duh to reality..
Other than their upcoming bankruptcy.
The west must leave, because Bankrupt Can Ahh Duh has already told us our future if we stick with them.
Slaves to their State of Thuggery, generation after generation.

“Deliberately choosing to pay more than you need to” isn’t that what Trump is trying to force Americans to do via tariffs?
Trump is trying to force Americans to buy what Canada could supply from other sellers thereby forcing Canada to lower tariffs on US products.
Part 1 will work, part2 will not. Canadians are stubborn and stupid.
