Heavily armed Boko Haram Islamists abducted more than 100 girls from a secondary school in northeast Nigeria, sparking a search by soldiers to track down the attackers, a security source and witnesses said Tuesday.
Some of the schoolgirls in the Chibok area of southern Borno state narrowly escaped their kidnappers by jumping off a truck in the middle of the night as the gunmen sought to cart them away, according to multiple witnesses.
A security source who requested anonymity said the attackers were members of Boko Haram, a radical group whose name means “Western education is forbidden.”

Islamic law is to be effectively enshrined in the British legal system for the first time under guidelines for solicitors on drawing up “Sharia compliant” wills.
Under ground-breaking guidance, produced by The Law Society, High Street solicitors will be able to write Islamic wills that deny women an equal share of inheritances and exclude unbelievers altogether.
The documents, which would be recognised by Britain’s courts, will also prevent children born out of wedlock – and even those who have been adopted – from being counted as legitimate heirs.

A gang of militant Muslims massacred 29 people at a Chinese railway station after they were unable to leave the country to wage holy war, it has been claimed.
Chinese state media said militants from Xinjiang, home to a large Muslim Uighur minority, carried out the ‘terrorist’ attack last Saturday in the southwestern city of Kunming, killing at least 29 people and wounding about 140.

Since al Qaeda’s vision is fundamentally about transforming other Muslims and Islam, much of the group’s identity is based on seeing themselves as people who are renewing the religion. How precisely they would act to transform the religion led to two separate views of their role: before 9/11, the leadership of the group talked about themselves as a vanguard, as a group that was going to charge ahead and others would follow. They would show other Muslims what Islam should be and the community would imitate them. But since 9/11, the leadership of al Qaeda has changed the way they talk about themselves. They are no longer depending on others to follow them. Rather, they are going to command others, to order people to do what they want and to have forces on the ground that they call branches who will do their bidding and act as their hands and feet out in the world.

Al Qaeda’s assumptions about the current war are also quite telling. The organization believes that this is an existential fight, not a limited conflict or a war of choice. They believe the war is about the very existence of Islam and they have made strenuous efforts to convince ordinary Muslims that the U.S. is waging a war on Islam. In this total war there can be no bystanders–“you are either with us or against us”–and any means are justified. This view of the war can be contrasted with the opinion of our government that this is indeed a limited conflict: one where we have the choice to engage or to disengage; to stay in Afghanistan or to withdraw and end that war; to arm rebels in Syria or to refrain from doing so; and choosing to withdraw will not harm our national security.

Although the religious component of the 2011 census in India has yet to be released, it is believed that the Hindu population has dropped below 80% for the first time since independence in 1947. The official word is that the data on religion is being withheld so as not to influence the upcoming elections this year. Apparently, political leaders worry that the information will skew election results as Hindus become increasingly alarmed about Muslim population growth and cast their votes for the political party that opposes illegal immigration. Their concerns are not misplaced, as areas with marked Muslim population increases have seen higher rates of violent crime.
In a push to appease the growing Muslim population and garner votes, the Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence Bill was created and has been promoted. The legislation is built on the erroneous assumption that majorities violently target minorities. The bill has been characterized as discriminatory, biased, and unconstitutional by Hindu leaders because it targets the Hindu majority, presumes guilt even from anonymous complaints, and is designed solely to aid prosecutions brought by minority populations. Hindu leaders are rightly concerned that if this bill becomes law, only Hindus will be prosecuted and convicted of violent acts and the incitement of hate crimes.

“Firefighters struggled to subdue the flames as the decades-old Al-Saeh library went up in smoke on Friday in the Serail neighborhood of Tripoli. Despite firefighters’ best efforts, little of the trove of historic books and manuscripts was recovered from the wreckage. ‘Two thirds of some 80,000 books and manuscripts housed there,’ a security source told Agence France Press, referring to the items destroyed. The source added that the blaze was started after a manuscript insulting the Prophet Mohammed was found hidden in the pages of one of the library books.

A young Afghan girl has been detained wearing a suicide vest in southern Afghanistan, officials say.
She was held on Sunday night in Helmand province, as she tried to carry out an attack on border police, an interior ministry spokesman told the BBC.
The girl, reported to be as young as eight and thought to be the sister of a prominent Taliban commander, is said to be in a state of shock and confusion.

We should anticipate a new Sting release any day now.
