Ayaan Hirsi Ali is an outspoken advocate for human rights throughout the Muslim world. Brandeis University, in Waltham, Massachusetts, had planned to give her an honorary degree. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) didn’t like this and pressured the powers-at-be at Brandweis to reverse their decision. Robert Spencer provides much insight:
The Brandeis statement did not mention CAIR, and probably university administrators are unaware of its Hamas ties or its record of opposing any and all counter-terror efforts. Nor did the statement specify exactly what in Hirsi Ali’s past statements was “inconsistent with Brandeis University’s core values.” CAIR, however, did so in its press release (also issued Tuesday; Brandeis snapped into line quickly) which quoted Hirsi Ali from a 2007 interview saying: “I think that we are at war with Islam.”

No, Brandeis isn’t silencing anyone. And the school has the right to change its mind. But it looks really bad. It has made a mockery of its alleged “core values” by rejecting an advocate of freedom in favour of advocates of medieval repression. And it has accepted the views of armchair blowhards over those of someone who has actually been in the trenches.
Brandeis is essentially a Jewish university & [apart from the hard-right zionists] Jews are reluctant to join in the Islam-bashing.
As a religious minority, they have been there before.
So, for example, only 2% voted for Geert Wilders in the last national election.
And they are not happy to be caught up in the latest “secular” ploy of Martine LePen to stop alternatives to pork in schools.
Hirsi Ali has drifted considerably from her early work in the Netherlands. From attempts to free women from Islamic misogyny, she began to declare that the only good muslim is a former muslim & now thinks that they should convert to Christianity. [ the medieval option offered to Jews]
Obviously, no one should be pressured to convert from one religion to another, and that applies more broadly to any other set of beliefs. But it’s often the left that reacts negatively or violently to anyone who questions their own set of beliefs. Examples are detailed here every week. The Trinity Western law school fiasco is one; the Mozilla fiasco is another.
The left has a term, “cultural appropriation”, for situations where a person outside a particular ethnic group creates an artistic work based around someone from within that group, a practice considered verboten. It’s a fraudulent term of course, and in fact is a variation of the very racism that the left claims to hate. But in this case, which deals not with artistic works but with non-fiction regarding cultural matters, the person from within a particular ethnic group who has real experience on the ground is pilloried by the left rather than shown the required respect. She may be right or she may be wrong, but she’s not following the leftist diktat so she’s effectively a non-person. Because to the left, it’s all about control.
Meanwhile the left continues to pander to Muslims, even though the crazier of them espouse views that are essentially the mirror image of Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s. That is apparently acceptable, because it’s potentially highly disruptive to productive capitalist Western society. And to destroy that is the real goal of the Marxist left, who would rather rule in Hell than be free in Heaven, or at least work towards establishing the latter on Earth.
