Closing Day: Canada VS USA

Open thread on the men’s hockey final (and the Olympics in general).

GOLD!!!

The nattering “own the podium” critics seem rather quiet of late… somewhere out there a Husky gas station is missing their flag.
The only thing that could spoil this is if there’s drinking after the game.
Heh “Where was Iggy?” He left after Russia was eliminated.
Via email;

As you probably have noted I’m a very old man who lives in kelowna B.C. I have family yet in Saskatchewan. Yes, I did do a term as Postmaster, Regina a long time ago.
I, as well as most Canadians swelled with pride through out these Olympic games and my heart was glad and the tears did flow. To experience this euphoric National pride was beautiful.
I want to share with you a glimpse of something else that I saw as these games came to a close.
Since 1968 our land and it’s people have been brow beaten into a submisive quiet, almost too humble a land in which National pride was not only frowned upon, but was ridiculed. That lengthy and undeserved humilty was forced upon us by the intellect and bullying of Pierre Elliot Trudeau and the rest of the so called elite who felt they new best.
Today that era has been put to rest. We have now shed that false and pious humility and can take our place as a proud people who have earned the right to stand tall. For this old guy to have been around to see this change has given me a sense of relief.
To finally say goodbye to Pierre and bury him forever is something I only dreamed about.
God bless our Country and thank you to our Olympians for giving us so much.
Yours truly
Mel W.

Tony Blair’s Britain

Where the foxes caper unmolested, the government packs your school lunch, and “there are always people who will buy a dog from their mate in a pub and won’t tell the authorities.

Every dog owner will have to take a costly ‘competence test’ to prove they can handle their pets, under new Government proposals designed to curb dangerous dogs.
Owners of all breeds would also have to buy third-party insurance in case their pet attacked someone, and pay for the insertion of a microchip in their animal recording their name and address.
The proposals are among a range of measures to overhaul dog laws in England and Wales being considered by senior Ministers, who are expected to announce a public consultation within weeks.

Somewhat surprisingly, owning a pitchfork remains legal – a fact that reflects more upon the British people than it does the Labour Party.

Update: A glimmer of hope? Though, I think they’d make more headway with a Brighton Tar ‘N Feather Party.

Reader Tips

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, welcome to SDA Late Nite Radio. Tonight, for your delectation and related to an outstanding note I made in regard to Ken (Kulak)’s comments here Last October, here is the great Mr. Red Skelton hosting The Red Skelton Show, II, III, IV, V & VI, with special guest star Martha Raye, and David Rose & his Orchestra, in early January, 1954 (Σt=58:30). The first & last sketches are, in my opinion, classic, brilliant Skelton, and the ad-libs in the main sketch, Of Mouth and Men, are just what we’ve come to expect from The Red Skelton Show.

Your Reader Tips are, as always, welcome in the comments.

What would we do without whale modelers?
Not The Onion;

A century of whaling may have released more than 100 million tonnes – or a large forest’s worth – of carbon into the atmosphere, scientists say.
Whales store carbon within their huge bodies and when they are killed, much of this carbon can be released.
US scientists revealed their estimate of carbon released by whaling at a major ocean sciences meeting in the US.
Dr Andrew [“the calculations I’ve done are really just the start!”] Pershing from the University of Maine described whales as the “forests of the ocean”.
Dr. Pershing and his colleagues from the Gulf of Maine Research Institute calculated the annual carbon-storing capacity of whales as they grew.
“Whales, like any animal or plant on the planet, are made out of a lot of carbon,” he said.
“And when you kill and remove a whale from the ocean, that’s removing carbon from this storage system and possibly sending it into the atmosphere.”
He pointed out that, particularly in the early days of whaling, the animals were a source of lamp oil, which was burned, releasing the carbon directly into the air.
“And this marine system is unique because when whales die [naturally], their bodies sink, so they take that carbon down to the bottom of the ocean.
“If they die where it’s deep enough, it will be [stored] out of the atmosphere perhaps for hundreds of years.”

Or, we could just grind them into feed for fur farms and market the coats as carbon offsets.

Somewhere Out There, Tommy Douglas Is Smiling

Repeat after me, America: “SACRED COW”…

In the Democrat leadership, we are not dealing with conventional politicians for whom the goal of being reelected is paramount and will rein in their radicalism. They want socialized medicine and all it entails about government control even more than they want to win elections. After all, if the party of government transforms the relationship between the citizen and the state, its power over our lives will be vast even in those cycles when it is not in the majority. This is about power, and there is more to power than winning elections, especially if you’ve calculated that your opposition does not have the gumption to dismantle your ballooning welfare state.

I nearly forgot to add – she’ll be a union cow. You pay guaranteed wages, they get guaranteed patients.
Don’t worry. You’ll learn to love her so much no politician will dare speak out against her.
More – “The main reason socialists love public health care….”

Y2Kyoto: Dear Judy Letter

C’mon, Willis – tell ’em what you really think!

The key to restoring trust has nothing to do with communication. Steve McIntyre doesn’t inspire trust because he is a good communicator. He inspires trust because he follows the age-old practices of science — transparency and openness and freewheeling scientific discussion and honest reporting of results.
And until mainstream climate science follows his lead, I’ll let you in on a very dark, ugly secret — I don’t want trust in climate science to be restored. I don’t want you learning better ways to propagandize for shoddy science. I don’t want you to figure out how to inspire trust by camouflaging your unethical practices in new and innovative ways. I don’t want scientists learning to use clever words and communication tricks to get people to think that the wound is healed until it actually is healed. I don’t want you to learn to use the blogosphere to spread your pernicious unsupported unscientific alarmism.

But Glenn Beck Is The Crazy One

Rigzone;

“We believe we have to decrease our use of energy to allow headroom for the developing nations to grow their economies,” Chu said in a speech in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates.
“There is no law of physics that says prosperity is proportional to carbon emissions,” Chu said.

It’s the quality of thinking we’ve come to expect from Obama’s hand-picked advisor on roof colour.

Scratch The Mayor Of Mississauga…

Regarding your phone call to me tuesday evening, I would like to make it clear why we have chosen to protest the offices of Palestine House in Mississauga.
On SaturdayِApril 3rd, Palestine House will commemorate the 34th anniversary of Land Day, with Mr. Abdul Bari Atwan. Talking about Iran’s nuclear capability on ANB Lebanese television on June 27, Abd Al-Bari Atwan, editor-in-chief of Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper, said, “If the Iranian missiles strike Israel, by Allah, I will go to Trafalgar Square and dance with delight.”
As a Jew and a Canadian, I find this genocidal rhetoric offensive and dangerous. You referred to it as “foolish” and to just be ignored. I will never ignore those that preach genocide. A public figure with your stature and experience should know that this type of language incites hate and violence – and in today’s climate, should not be tolerated in any community. I must say, quite frankly, that I find your request for me to cancel the demonstration to be highly inappropriate.
Further, you told me that you are “intimately involved” with Palestine House – I’m not certain what “intimate involvement” means but I would suggest that you should use your influence to have this organization cancel their speaker and render a public apology.
Our protest will be organized and above all, peaceful.
Respectfully,
Meir Weinstein,
National Director Jewish Defence League of Canada
