  1. The IOC needs to understand and be tolerant of the cultural sensitivities and rituals of different countries. How dare they judge one culture against the standards of another?

  2. Good for the Girls!!
I dont blame them one bit after the crap they put up with in the game, The ref’s sure gave it their best try AGAIN to give the US the Gold.
I thought i seen somewhere that it was a AP reporter who caught them an hour after the game, Why is a Reporter hanging around the ice area anyways? Just for this scenario Gotcha crap.
And while iam on it Anyone else Notice how Gracious the Finish Girls were for their Bronze smiling & waving Then going to the Canadian Girls to congradulate, And did you notice the sulking & sour faces on the US team They could not even acknowledge the Fans respect.

  3. Well I’m a little concerned about their behavior, smoke a cigar like that and you’re just asking for a hot ash in the eye.

  4. bryanr isn’t anti-American, he just doesn’t know how to express himself without injecting his own progressive and misguided prejudice….

  5. I don’t recall the same criticism when Sid the Kid was drinking Champaign out or Lord Stanley’s Cup.
    Double standard?
I’m very happy for the girls. Winning Olympic Gold is a phenomenal feat regardless of the sport.
That said, would anyone like to engage in the following conversation: Judging from the point spreads, and the forgone conclusion that it would be a USA vs Canada final since the last Olympics; should Woman’s hockey even be an Olympic sport?
IMO, this is the worst example of a competition on a worldwide stage that I can think of.

  6. Yes, Indiana Homez, there’s a double standard, and rightly so. Last time I checked, the olympics were an amateur event. That means following some very strict guidelines. The Stanley cup is part of a professional sport. They can do whatever they want, as long as someone keeps paying them.
Amateur sport, especially at national, or international levels, is governed by very, very strict codes of conduct. Believe me, if any other athlete brought booze to an event, he’d be suspended from his/her sport, for a good, long time.

  7. Good point Chris.
These girls are supposed to be role models! I fear little girls everywhere will by choking on hotdogs while in their beds pretending to smoke cigars.
btw, judging from the picture, I guess we should be glad they were just smoking the cigars.

  8. I just noticed the bottle of booze in the girl’s hand. I wouldn’t be surprised if they strip them of the gold medal. What a bunch of retards. They aren’t even allowed booze in the locker room.

  9. “Last time I checked, the Olympics were an amateur event.”
When was that? 1950? The Olympics might be an exhibition style meet, but it is not by any reasonable measure an amateur event.
Can you show that smoking a cigar or drinking booze after an event, off air, on their own time, is contrary to some international sporting event standards?

  10. Sorry Brad nice try ,
But what iam against is the constant Uncalled for Cheap penalties that the Canadian girls always seem to endure during olympic play, world cup etc.. when they play the US.
Now when you constantly run a goalie, stop a potential break away by tripping(with the ref rt there), consistant interference you would think those would be penalties Right? They would be if it was the Canadian girls!! At least this time the Ref’s did not call 9 penalties in a Row like they did in Turin.

  11. I’ll probably get yelled at for this but…
I didn’t think it was classy at all. Very unlady and unsportsman-like. Should the team be subject to an investigation? Of course not. That would just compound the silliness. Treat adults like adults.
    Just my thoughts.

  12. That guy didn’t lose a medal did he Kate?
I recall watching that clip and reminicing about the days we’d be two fisting pitchers of beer on keg night at the bar.

  13. DP said: Yes, Indiana Homez, there’s a double standard, and rightly so. Last time I checked, the olympics were an amateur event.
Since you must have been asleep for, oh I dunno …the last 25 years, let me give you an update. The Olympics are Not an amateur event.
Other news of note: The Soviet Union collapsed, the Berlin Wall was torn down and Germany has reunited. I could go on but, you can find out about a lot of other things that have changed on the internet. You seem to be aware of the internet. Did you know it’s not strictly used to post uninformed comments? Good luck

  14. Uh…mashed kimono, you’re right you’re going to get yelled at. Unladylike?!?!?!?!? It’s hockey, not figure skating, ladies don’t play.

  15. Not me bryanr.
My philosophy is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. In many subjective sports like boxing you often have to beat the champion decisively. The champ will often (and rightfully so) get the benefit of the doubt in close rounds. This can also be conversely so in a David vs Goliath type match(see Canada vs USA hockey).
That said, it shouldn’t happen in most sports but it does. Whether its business, or home town favourites we’ll always have to deal with the human factor. The only way to handle this IMO is to expect and prepare for it. The knowledge that this is likely to happen is the best defence, although it isn’t always so.

  16. The women should have known better. If you participate in an event, you follow the rules,or you don’t participate. The women likely planned this beforehand. It was childish, shame on them.

  17. Uh, Peter (it is Peter, right?), I don’t care who they are. Unlady-like is unlady-like. Sure, let them celebrate after a victory they deserve. Try doing it with some class.

  18. How is it that This came to light after ‘a’ reporter seen this, Thats One(1)reporter No other news outlet knew about it Until this I repeat 1 reporter.
So again What was a reporter doing hanging around the Ice Area 1hr after the ceremonies ended? When in all reports there were only a few stragler fans still in the stands.
Anyways Thats my take Boys & Girls
Gotta go, Have a fun safe friday eve all.
its gonna be a good Coffee shop debate Saturday Morn.

  19. Unladylike…give it a rest. They were just kicking back and celebrating their success. I suspect the temperament and taste of the women’s hockey team is substantially different than the bridge club.

  20. The girls were likely making a comedic comment on something they heard folks saying. (Use your imagination, it was probably said)
I think its deliberately not lady-like.
Glad to see that someone in Canada is able to give as good as they get, with humour. Kate-style.

  21. Is there any truth to the rumour that Bill Clinton has become a big fan of the Canadian ladies hockey team?
J/K. WTG Ladies. Smoke ’em if you got ’em!

  22. Fans were gone, the arena was closed to the public…let them celebrate on the ice….it smells a hell of a lot better then the locker rooms!!

  23. I was brought up in an all-girl home and wasn’t much into hockey. ‘Have to say that the whole “hockey culture” isn’t really my cup of tea … can of beer … glass of wine … flute of champagne … whatever.
This drinking very publicly and on the ice is extremely juvenile behaviour on the part of the members of the Canadian women’s hockey team and I’m disappointed. It’s against the rules. I deal with a lot of kids in classrooms every day who flaunt the rules … just because — and it’s a real drag. Rules are in place for a reason. These hockey players could have waited till they’d left the stadium to crack open their bottles to celebrate.
In a grade four class today, one of the ten-year olds I was teaching pointed to this picture in the paper and said, “They’re drunk.” I assured her that they weren’t, but have to wonder about the impression this image has made on her.
On top of saying “congratulations” to the gold medal winners, I’d also like to add “GROW UP!”

  24. What a great comment on how we are growing. I feel great that they had a great game won the gold medal and had an innocent celebration and let their hair down. The pressure must have been immense with expectations from the public. Good on ya girls.

  25. I too often worked up a lot of gas after a hard game…
(lighten up folks, the earth didn’t wobble)

  26. And the gold medal for hypocrisy goes to the IOC. After years of studiously ignoring hopped up eastern European athletes and crooked ice skating judges, they come down on a bunch of Canadian college age girls acting the part. They don’t seem to be actually smoking the cigar, more like puffing and passing it around (like Clinton it doesn’t count if you don’t inhale). After 3 sucessive gold medals I say they deserved a little celebration. You go girl!

  27. I’m just glad to see that Canada hasn’t gone the way of the weenies in the U.S. who have banned indoor smoking (actually I don’t give a rat’s butt, but like to tweak the feminists/liberals who should be a bit conflicted).

  28. Cripes a whole s**tload of folks need to lighten up… they won – let’em have some celebrating. And the IOC can kiss my tuches – bunch of corrupt, whiny pantywaists, the lot of ’em. Amazing the idiotic little stuff people get twisted around the axle for, especially in a country which acts so bleedin’ permissively in other areas (oh, I don’t know, say naked or mostly-naked men marching down the main thoroughfair during Pride parades). Sheesh… I thought the Yanks got all the Puritans that were thrown out of the UK.

  29. They won when it counted most and they celebrated it…good for them. Wish it had been our women instead but congratulations to the Canadian team.

  30. Woman’s curling game on. Canada just missed an easy 2, had to settle for 1 with the hammer.
    1 – 0 for Canada after 2.

  31. Their only mistake was not taking the party to a safe injection site where the MSM could write articles on them suffering from the alleged “Human Condition”. Another non-story.

  32. I didn’t realize there were so many stuffed shirt, politically correct people on this site. I think the bitching is caused by jealousy, form a bunch of arm chair (perfect) athletes sitting in their easy chairs with a bag of BBQ chips in one hand and a TV remote in the other fantasizing they could accomplish what these ladies did. . Ease up for f#@$ sake it was a few beers and a cigar.
