Unaffordable housing creates a lot more problems than declining provincial education funding as families move to cheaper abodes. But then again, the same people bemoaning this problem are likely the same ones who cheered for zero percent interest rates that sparked the housing bubble to begin with.
Families aren’t just moving to a different neighbourhood; they’re leaving the region entirely. Driven by a cost of living that has become unsustainable for many young parents, the “Surrey dream” is being packed into moving trucks and headed further east — out of the valley and, in many cases, out of the province.

Sorry Stevie … the Surryites are moving East to the Okanagan. Oh well.
Where their fee simple titles will be stripped away by the FN.
Well, Kenji, they’ve been calling Kelowna “Surrey on the Lake” for years.
At least I live semi rural and stay away from the main attractions.
The “Surrey Dream” is laughable if you’ve actually seen the place and hear about what goes on.
Maybe Alberta will get more diversity from this exodus.
Joey B…I have “freehold” property….for now.
The article gets the cause of housing price inflation totally wrong. Trudeau doubled the national debt during COVID, borrowed more after that to fund stupid ideas, and then increased the demand for housing by importing 5 Million immigrants. So yes, inflating the currency and increasing demand leads to increased pricing. Yahoo Finance ain’t worth much if it doesn’t understand basic economics.
PM Carney is taking steps to solve the problem. He will invite 10 million immigrants from India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan to settle in Canada. And will give them free healthcare and housing.
And Carney will solve the housing problem by a moratorium on building new houses, condos, or apartments for the next ten years.
Dialectic Armenian Dogfarts!
Surrey dream?
Isn’t that being able to take a dump on Wasaga Beach?
Slurry Surrey
Combine the financial pressure to move away with the falling birth rates throughout the country and many school districts will be shrinking. It’s just beginning…
