We Don’t Need No Stinking Twisty Bulbs

I love the smell of majority in the morning.

The Conservative government wants to postpone pulling the plug on incandescent light bulbs, saying it needs more time to allow for technological innovations and to deal with concerns about compact fluorescent lamps.

  1. Damn. Just when my incandescent bulb collection was getting to the point where it would last a lifetime.
Incandescent Prohibition? Think of the opportunity of having a Canadian manufacturer selling light bulbs south of the border when factories are being shut down in the US.
More Canadian jobs, more Obama supporters scratching their heads.

  2. Another sign that change is on the way. Finally we may be able to get back to values that make sense. Save, don’t spend. Cut luxuries (Multiculturalism comes to mind) Don’t do the crime if you can’t do the time. Fire the Nannies and get them out of my life. To name just a few irritations.

  3. I heard a quick announcement of this before the election. This should mean I can quit stocking up on round bulbs for awhile, have a shelf full of them now.
As long as there is a factory prepared to keep making them then we should be safe from this green stupidity idea.

  4. I was banking on this BS unfolding the way it is now.
Stocking up on incan. lightbulbs, trying to guage when was the best time to do my cross border buying,($Can remaining strong and above par)etc.
Yes it is nice to wake up in the morning to a majority and the relative stability that accompanies it.

  5. I have some incandecent bulbs that are 20 years old. and had one particular bulb taken from the marquee at Cinema park that burnt out last year , a run of over 40 years.

  6. It may be a moot point if there are no incandescent manufactures left in the world.

  7. There goes my light bulb bootlegging plan.
I will switch to stockpiling toilet paper … if the delivery of good and services is ever interrupted for any length of time (and I am sure it will be as things are going these days) … can you imagine what people will pay for a roll of nice soft Delsey? …. What’s the alternative?
Meanwhile … Go Harper! Pretty soon a lot of non metropolitan residents will be digging up their long guns and putting them back on the rack in the den. Next thing you know … Canada will be a free country again.

  8. At the farm we came up with a plan that allows remarkable savings on power while still using incandescent bulbs. We shut the light off when not in use. I guess we should let the lefties know about this strategy.

  9. Best line from story:
If the United States bans incandescent light bulbs before Canada does, Canada risks becoming a dumping ground for an inefficient product, he said.
    Dump ’em here, please.

  10. Abe:
You can still bootleg incandescent bulbs into ‘I killed Osama’ land.

  11. Twisty bulbs….let’s see, what is it? $10-$12 or more for 3 bathroom globes? after 6-8 months of on-off shock, they fail.
That pretty much illustrates the ‘green psychosis’ for me in a nutshell:
Create ‘problems’ that don’t exist and ‘solve’ them with expensive crap that doesn’t work.

  12. The ban is a huge scam being run by industry insiders and politicians under environut cover.
The fact is they can’t mass produce the practical super profitable, patent protected, light source
that was supposed to make them billions while ripping off the consumer. So the silly dance
continues and politicians pretend they aren’t being left holding the bag while handing us the bill.

  13. If a two year delay on doing something stupid is considered gutsy politics when enjoying a majority government we’re screwed. As Steyn has pointed out on numerous occasions, an admirable trait of the left is that when in power they use their majority in jamming their agendas through. That’s how we got here folks. A gutsy move would be to abolish the redundant federal agency (Ministry of Natural Resources) that regulates such nonsense. What next, a commission to study the impacts of reducing the paperwork for the long gun registry?

  14. Caught in the filter but GE has a LED lightbulb that lasts a long time (4 hours a day) and costs only 50 bucks each.

  15. Speedy,
Yeah, that came out in another thread/tip the other day here. From a purely “conservation” point of view, they make sense, but at this point, what’s the payback….I guess if McGuinty gets back in and keeps hiking our electricity rates, payback will be shorter, and shorter…

  16. “Canada risks becoming a dumping ground for an inefficient product”
Ha, my favorite line. Cheap lightbulbs everyone, ain’t Capitalism (& freedom) Grand.
    Fabulous.

  17. I live in Kanada. You know that place – the land of two seasons – July 1st and winter. The fact that incandescent bulbs are a source of heat AND light is a miracle. Thank you Mr. Edison. To paraphrase Ms. Shaidle, no one is smart enough to tell me how to live……. but that fact doesn’t stop many, does it?

Yep. Smells like napalm. Cue the agonized screams of burnt watermelons in 3, 2, 1…
John Chittick said: “If a two year delay on doing something stupid is considered gutsy politics when enjoying a majority government we’re screwed.”
John, we have 70 years worth of stupid to unwind. Not going to get it done in a weekend, right? I plan to celebrate every incremental step along the way.
Still, the sentiment is a worthy one. Faster please!

  19. When are they going to fix Firearms Act?
If Firearms Act is not dealt with quickly, CPC will have no chance in hell of ever being re-elected.

  20. Oh, they’ll still be making regular light bulbs in China for the next 50 years. I planned to borrow the MV Ocean Lady to smuggle some in.

  21. The US is banning these bulbs although I’m not aware of the drop-dead date. Drudge reported last week that South Carolina is bucking this trend and have permission to open an incandescent bulb manufacturing facility provided that the product is sold within the state only.
Seeing how we enjoy travelling to SC on an annual basis, you can bet that our home will never run out of them.
Meanwhile, they can still be purchased in Michigan. Bought some last Sunday.

  22. Hurray!! This will get the CPC more votes than the lifting of the CWB monopsony.

  23. “When are they going to fix Firearms Act?
If Firearms Act is not dealt with quickly, CPC will have no chance in hell of ever being re-elected.”
Dear lord. Just shut up for one minute, and let them get to Ottawa, for goodness sakes.

  24. A full-out ban of incandescent bulbs isn’t required, but you all should be using mainly fluorescent bulbs anyways. They save on power usage and they last at least 3x longer, so they’re generally cheaper than incandescent bulbs over their lifetime.

  25. Durned conservatives!
First they destroyed my income trust nest egg, now I’ll have to keep the 40′ trailer full of incandescent bulbs parked in the driveway for at least another year ’till I can cash in on it.
My wife is NOT going to like this!

  26. The Screw U light bulb, symbolic of another flawed marketing campaign of the left.

  27. They’re just delaying it by a couple years? Weak. We’re going nowhere fast with this tepid government of losers.

  28. “saying it needs more time to allow for technological innovations and to deal with concerns about compact fluorescent lamps.”
Trust me. In Governmentese this means its a dead horse.
    It will just fade away.

  29. “We’re going nowhere fast with this tepid government of losers”
Smart? Certainly unhappy. Permanently it seems.

  30. Great, Environmental Defence has an office right here in Ottawa! I can mail them my burnt out CFLs
and pay less postage than sending them to David Suzuki’s foundation on the left coast.
Incidentally, I have more incandescents than CFLs yet my name-brand CFLs burn out more often.
There is a column today on American Thinker titled
‘The Dangers of CFLs….’ that is worth a read.

  31. when I was in high school the physics teacher trotted out a real old fashioned looking clear glass unit that according to him was acquired when Thomas Edison was still alive.
mind you, that was 40 years ago but …..

  32. The cruel irony of conserving power is that some utilities in the USA, have explained rate hikes because of reduced demand….watch for McSquinty and/or the left coast to pull that one.

  33. This is more good news and so is Peter Kent’s announcement of no carbon tax as is reported in jcl’s 2:16 post.

  34. Canada has majority
    and SDK blog keep saying
    world run by crazy people
so can we say Canada NOW run by crazy majority people
can do anything and not shy to do bad thing
istead grow up to be bad boy too
world need PEACE BOND not peace
    as we see
Israel vs Palstine … again this is border and do not interfer in each other life
    Canada vs US
    Nonmuslim vs Muslim
to stay from each other this is our border and do not come close to each other if
they hate each other to will to destroy each other
building peace is process of years of gradully adopt to each other
peace is not word or contract to sign
Liberal pary bone built by Bob Rae
is he like to transform it reality of what people like
or Harper still belive majorty are dump and
if they do not vote for Harper freind he
    can bring them up
    which is reason
    saying if Harper is boss
he is god now with new book of Harperism like judism and Islam
    he can move around
    but again make sure
take a time to let people like each other in process
    call peace bond NOT peace
and still word run by crazy people
Harper welcome more athesim or sikh to his senate
even if you see Iran who is people think worst country
jewish has two seats and christain has two seats that is why
very hardly by LAW you can see anybody bother or kill Iranina jewish or Iranian christian
the same way in Egypt or same way in Canada who has not seat in senate or parlemtn
    to hear Muslim view
Muslim need at least two seats
by Muslim shia and M uslim sunni
if Harper plan to choose that seats he will bring Ahamadia Muslim and Isalami Muslim to Senate seat because both are not follow Islam but Isreal only like them and allow them to live in Israel
Next job of Harper to have two seat in Senate one for shai Musim and one for Sunni Muslim in Senate to respect right of Muslim more than 4.4 million Muslim live in Canada
we have more than 2,500,000 Muslim in Ontario live
and we have close to 1 million in Quebec and 1 million in west Vancover alberta
If qubec has vote because their vote was 900,000
and if Green has seat because their number is 500,000
we need to have for relgion group also one seat
    we need folloiwing seat:
two for jewish-orthodox and regular jewish
three for christian catholc and protestan orthodox
    two to 5 for Muslim ( 1. ( Iranian-Afgani) 2. Pakstani -Indsian 3. African like Tansania 4. European Muslim 5. Arab ( iraqi or kewit or bahrain etc…) )

  35. > Just shut up for one minute
    Not in your lifetime.
They’ve managed to do something about the bulbs, but still nothing for the gun owners.

  36. “Pulling the plug” is the wrong metaphor for light bulbs.
    They’re UN-SCREWING us!
    Bad News

  37. Amos doesn’t know that UV causes skin cancer.
I too was seduced by reduction of hydro bill, but quickly noticed that pharmacy bill went up. So all those twisties are sitting there waiting for me to decide who to ship them to – Harper or Suzuki.
