Why just end their monopoly? They should disband their operation and turn over their assets to be auctioned off to the hightest bidder. After that they should get rid of the milk marketing board, which to me, who is someone who is not a farmer, but a lover of dairy products actually has a day to day effect on my life.

I know the industry needs time to adjust. I also know the highly paid CWB employees and board will not go quietly. Expect huge amounts of farmers money to be spent on advertizing and court challenges to protect this montrosity. I will only believe I have choice when I sell my first bushel to the buyer of my choice.

I agree, only the employees will be held in custody for a very long time. The C.W.B. was formed right after W.W.II. That is a lot of years to audit. Maybe we could put a tracking chip in there wrist to make it easier to round them up when the auditors are finished. Also, notify border patrol to make sure they don’t flea the country. Does anyone know if Ritz has applied for a search warrant yet?
That the Wheat Board lasted this long is an unfortunate testament to the power of collectivist mythology in our culture. After nearly three quarters of a century of pointless sacrifice by Western Canadian farmers who saw their grains sold at bargain prices to Britain, the Soviet Union and countless other buyers, who saw processing opportunities flee to other nations, the years and years of shame can now thankfully come to an end.
I wonder what things look like down at the CWB offices these days. Maybe they’re shredding documents.. or maybe they’re going on one last binge of self indulging spending.

I just wonder if the Harper government will go after the supply management monopoly after changing the Wheat Board. Most of the supply managemnent is in Ontario and Quebec and they have a very strong lobby group. Right now it is impossible for any average joe farmer to get into any supply managed business due to cost of quota and quota restrictions. Competition in the egg, dairy,and poultry business should come, and will give us lower prices in the supermarket. Choice for farmers should be for all farmers

The action Prime Minister Steve takes on the gun registry will absolutely define his majority and future.
If what passes for severe action in this pantywaist country is not forthcoming I’m out, the base is gone and the CPC will be left to their own demise. It is time for heads to roll, from Adscam to the CWB to the 2 billion dollars “missing” in Human Resources under Chretien the corruption must end with action now.

The corruption must be legion in our gigantic bureaucracies. Why do we NEVER hear or read articles like the one above as it pertains to our politicos. Macleans magazine can write grand articles about the mafia ( the freaking mafia) scamming with our politicians to ruin our cities and country and nothing happens. Nobody goes to jail, nobody is ever fired.

If you listen into local radio from the States, the news is always reporting on some county commissioner or school board trustee caught with his hand in the till and fired or jailed. Why not here, why does it NEVER happen here.
I want justice and trust restored in our government. I want these criminals deloused from our government and action taken to reduce the pain they inflict on the citizenry along with a significant tax cut or I will never vote conservative again.

I’m always amazed by people from central Canada lecturing westerners about how important the CWB’s monopoly is, all the while rejecting having the monopoly extended to the rest of Canada.
The double standards is staggering.
I don’t think this means the end of the Wheat Board, Part timers and marginal farmers really don’t have the time or will generally to do the market research required. However for the major producers who account for the majority of wheat and malt barley – yes, finally an marketing options. I only hope they remove the penalty for farmers – especially on the border to be able market directly into the U.S. Also we may get some value added manufacturing.
This would be good if the Cons were in a minority. With a majority they should be ending the CWB subsidy and disbanding it altogether.

I look forward to freedom, but this is far from over. Those who have been granted monopolies and who have learned to abuse those monopolies will not give up easily. The CWB has learned to love it’s power and prestige. Expect lots of farmers money to be spent on lawyers and advertizing. Expect those who love to be kept in bondage to role out numerous, the sky is falling stories. It doesn’t matter whether it is a utility, taxi commision, labor union, marketing board or the CWB, those who have been granted a prefered place in the world will always feel entitled to their entitlements and will fight to keep them, the real world is just to scary.
I hope the 4 Quebec ministers and new senators are as quick to agree when the egg and milk marketing boards are targeted as the next body unfair to all farmers and consumers.
I agree that either it applies to the whole country or none but I hope this turns out to be the panacea most here seem to think it will.
So what changes are going in the budget now.
