Is There Nothing That Obama Can’t Do?

Shocker;

The U.S. State Department will postpone a decision on whether to approve the Keystone XL pipeline, people familiar with the matter said, in a move that will allow the Obama administration to delay the controversial issue until after the 2012 election.

Oh well. Let the southern bastards freeze in the dark, I guess. Good thing they don’t need the jobs.

This Might Have Been Your Government

(Or, at least, your official opposition.)

“What moose eats barley?”
That was a bewildered response Tuesday from two visiting Liberal MPs after learning some oilsands operators plant barley as part of their land reclamation efforts.
But, as both Carolyn Bennett, aboriginal affairs and northern development critic, and Kirsty Duncan, environment critic and a Nobel winner, pointed out,”moose don’t eat barley.”

Reporter Carol Christian managed to write 992 words without googling three: “Oil sands reclamation”

Once the top soil has been placed, we can re-vegetate the area. This is done in the following order:
* Leveling: to smooth the surface
* Fertilizing: from the ground or by using a helicopter
* Disking: to help incorporate the fertilizer into the root zone
* Contouring: to break apart any clumps that may have surfaced from disking
* Seeding: in reforestation, the area is first seeded with barley for erosion control; if the area is to be grassland, it will be seeded with a grass and legume mixture
* Harrowing: to cover the seed which provides optimal conditions for germination

Or …. Moose in Barley.

Deja Obama

All over again.

Herman Cain has spent his life living and working all over the country — Indiana, Georgia, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Washington, D.C. — but never in Chicago.
So it’s curious that all the sexual harassment allegations against Cain emanate from Chicago: home of the Daley machine and Obama consigliere David Axelrod.
Suspicions had already fallen on Sheila O’Grady, who is close with David Axelrod and went straight from being former Chicago mayor Richard M. Daley’s chief of staff to president of the Illinois Restaurant Association (IRA), as being the person who dug up Herman Cain’s personnel records from the National Restaurant Association (NRA).
The Daley-controlled IRA works hand-in-glove with the NRA. And strangely enough, Cain’s short, three-year tenure at the NRA is evidently the only period in his decades-long career during which he’s alleged to have been a sexual predator.

The HP 41CX: An Engineer’s Dream!

I had occasion to use my HP 41CX calculator today. What a brilliant piece of technology! It’s almost 30 years old and still looks & works like new.

I can’t think of any other technology I own that has been as trouble-free as this device. On the opposite end of the spectrum are print cartridges, including those from HP. A friend of mine is a print cartridge reseller and printer repairman. He insists that print cartridges were very much reengineered to fail sooner than they need to, falling under the category of planned obsolescence. Incidentally, in case you’ve never seen it before, this chart of the cost of various liquids is fascinating.
Open Question: Are there any items you own that have surprised you in terms of how much longer than expected they’ve lasted or how much quicker than expected they’ve broken?

Agrifoods Cooperative Dispute?

Via email,

Not sure if you know anything about the Agrifoods Cooperative. It’s a relic from when dairy cooperatives actually mattered.
A lot of farmers from BC to Saskatchewan have a lot of cash tied up in the coop, and there is a pretty meaningful sized business located there as well. Most of the business is actually yogurt production under the Yoplait brand through a business Agrifoods co-owns with Agropur (the largest cooperative remaining in Canada). Yoplait has decided not to renew the license for yogurt production, and so suddenly the business for these guys will dry up.
So Yoplait offered to buy the yogurt production from Agrifoods at a price that would have given seven bucks a share to members (the current share price is under two dollars). The board said no. They said they would rather start their own brand of yogurt and compete with Yoplait. But they didn’t tell their members. They just told their members the only option was to compete with Yoplait.
So now the members just heard that they could have sold for something like seven bucks a share (or higher) rather than compete and are pretty pissed. There is a activist shareholder group that has a website up and they are trying to get the board to listen to the members and do something in the interests of the farmers.
With more than 2,000 farmers in the co-op and ~20m shares outstanding, this represents up to $140m that could be released to the members, the farmers, if the board listened to their membership and sold the business. Sounds a bit like a certain board that felt it was in the interest of their members to run off and do something crazy like sue the government.

This is all news to me, so I’m posting it for the purposes of information and/or feedback. The Members Action Group website.

I have a better solution

Kate’s last post linked this story

1. Put yourself before a committee that asks tough questions. Give direct answers. Have them sit on higher ground (small platform??) so they appear to be the one you are serving (not vice versa). Answer directly and honestly.
2. Take responsibility and articulate how you will solve the problem. Keep it simple clear and direct.
3. Take your bragging sideshow to another discussion. We all want to hear your opinion about the government’s leadership…but not to soften the blow of missed results.
4. Send me a thank you card, for this great advice.

I have a better suggestion. Fire Flaherty.
Here’s a quick number for the idiot. Total 2011 Budget Expenditures: $276.6 billion, Total 2011 Budget Deficit: $29.6 billion. An across the board cut of 10.7% eliminates the deficit. Hey spend-thrift, find the cuts. No ‘bbbbuuutttts’, no nothing. Get it done yesterday.
The lying scum promised us…promised that we were going to eliminate the deficit on time and on target. Harper campaigned on it. Every conservative should be emailing their MP’s and raising some holy heck about the Debt Minister’s irresponsible failure to do his job.
People gave the PC’s the benefit of the doubt with the stimulus. G20 agreement, “Everyone else was doing it.”, minority gov’t. Well, none…none of those variables are in play now. The only reason to dump more debt into the economy is because these idiots believe it works.
Stop it. Stop it, stop it, stop it and FIRE HIS ASS if he refuses.
If you go ahead with this budget update crap you owe Kevin Page and every conservative that voted for you an apology because you villified Page and you lied to us.

“Rabid Leftists” Takes On an Entirely New Meaning

In my own political vernacular, here’s how I describe folks on the Left:
a) Centre Left (extremely moderate, often apolitical)
b) Left (mostly moderate, views often not powered by facts)
c) Far Left (not moderate, entirely driven by emotions, hypocrisy galore)
d) Radical Left (extremist, almost all views fueled by hatred)
e) Rabid Left (likely mentally ill, often incoherent, righteousness on steroids)
Anecdotal evidence suggests that most SDA Trolls fall into categories ‘d’ or ‘e’.
However, a new report from the Vancouver Police Department suggests that Rabid Leftists, part of Occupy Vancouver, have taken to actually biting officers to get their impressions across. This isn’t going to end well.

It’s Probably Nothing

Maxed Out Mama;

Well, now. After staring at this thing in dismay and sorrow I started thinking about Swedish movies. You know, the kind of thing where the people are just sitting around staring. Every once in a while they utter a word, and just when you are about to die of boredom they get up and look at a clock or break a mirror or something like that. It is supposed to be deeply symbolic. I don’t know what happens next because I never last that long.

The Decline And Fall Of The American Empire

President Obama’s Agriculture Department today announced that it will impose a new 15-cent charge on all fresh Christmas trees—the Christmas Tree Tax—to support a new Federal program to improve the image and marketing of Christmas trees.
In the Federal Register of November 8, 2011, Acting Administrator of Agricultural Marketing David R. Shipman announced that the Secretary of Agriculture will appoint a Christmas Tree Promotion Board. The purpose of the Board is to run a “program of promotion, research, evaluation, and information designed to strengthen the Christmas tree industry’s position in the marketplace; maintain and expend existing markets for Christmas trees; and to carry out programs, plans, and projects designed to provide maximum benefits to the Christmas tree industry” (7 CFR 1214.46(n)). And the program of “information” is to include efforts to “enhance the image of Christmas trees and the Christmas tree industry in the United States” (7 CFR 1214.10).
