    Briggs has lost his job. Matin stands to lose his business – Powerline Plus – in the wake of Toronto Hydro’s decision to chop 1,000 or more jobs in its own operations and those of contractors like Powerline.
    Toronto Hydro cancelled contract work, and is preparing to lay off staff; the Ontario Energy Board reduced its planned spending on renewing the Toronto’s power grid by two-thirds for the next three years.
    Energy minister Chris Bentley says the system is working the way it is supposed to.
    But it has spelled disaster for Powerline Plus, a company with 300 staff whose only business is working for Toronto Hydro.
    Owner Ben Matin said the company can’t afford to sit idle.
    “If it doesn’t start within a month or so, we’re bankrupt,” he said. “Not just me, but other contractors.”
    Employee Briggs, a lineman for three decades, said the layoff was a shock. Workers had been assured as recently as last week that the company’s status was secure.”

    Have you heard about maestro Alan Gilbert stopping the Mahler Ninth Symphony, in the last, very quiet and dramatic minute or so, at Avery Fisher Hall on Tuesday night because someone’s MARIMBA phone ring or alarm, front orchestra, continued for MINUTES?
    This story is enough to warm the c0ckles of the hearts of those of us thoroughly tired of—as in fed up with—the self-referential arrogance (I know, that’s redundant, but it makes the point!) of far too many social media users.

  47. Twitter exploded this morning because of some lesbian couple’s divorce proceedings. I guess when Paul Martin decided to let the courts essentially write ssm legislation he didn’t think it all the way through. The best defence to this crap would be to change the divorce law. That would kill the “hidden agenda” attack line forever.
