So much for that. They’re even keeping the education on.

However, in deference to people’s sensibilities, the normal humn reluctance to accept unpleasant truths, and all the nonsense in the media, I think I should support that thesis rather solidly.

On the topic of energy in Canada, two SDA commenters offered some pretty profound common sense wisdom that you’ll rarely see in the mainstream media:
Some myopic Canadians can’t seem to grasp that oil, gas and potash provide most of the revenue that pays for all those government benefits they believe they’re entitled to. We’re fortunate to have a government run by a Conservative Party and a Prime Minister who puts Canadians first. North of 60 – you make an excellent point. And, sadly, many (most?) Canadians think that money just appears out of the ground, and have little idea where Canada would be without fossil fuels and potash. Personally, I would like to pull up to those people’s houses, disconnect the gas lines, and tell them to grow their own food. We are becoming a fundamentally unserious nation. In any case, irrespective of whether you favor the global data, or the oceanic data, it is clear the the temperature with its fluctuations is inconsistent with the “high estimate” in the IPCC-FAR (and it has been the case for a decade if you take the oceanic temperature, or half a decade, if you take the global temperature, not admitting that it is biased). In fact, it appears that only the low estimate can presently be consistent with the observations. Clearly then, earth’s climate sensitivity should be revised down, and the upper range of sensitivities should be discarded and with it, the apocalyptic scenarios which they imply. For some reason, I doubt that the next AR5 report will consider this inconsistency, nor that they will revise down the climate sensitivity (and which is consistent with other empirical indicators of climate sensitivity). I am also curious when will the general public realize that the emperor has no clothes.

Here’s the crux of what Harper said:
It’s one thing in terms of whether Canadians, you know, want jobs, to what degree Canadians want environmental protection. These are all valid questions.
But just because certain people in the United States would like to see Canada be one giant national park for the northern half of North America, I don’t think that’s part of what our review process is all about.

The Costa Concordia Cruise Ship Crash: A Moral Question
“Interesting” stories are coming out of the recent ship crash off the Italian Coast:
Reports from the survivors of Concordia seem to be unanimous in condemning the failure of the crew, who are said to have shoved women and children out of the way in their anxiety to get to the boats. There were senior officers alongside Schettino who seem to have found their way safely off the ship while the passengers were left to themselves.
Beyond the fact that it was the duty of the crew to stay behind until every passenger was safely off of the ship, in 2012 is it now sexist to condemn male passengers on a ship crash for not focusing entirely on getting women & children into the lifeboats first?

Time for Helicopter Parents to Do a Rethink
Petula Dvorak has written an excellent article which should be passed along to all helicopter parents. Here’s a snippet:
[Helicopter parents] are the mothers and fathers who demanded laws for bike helmets, car seats and warning labels on every plastic bag and bucket in the universe. They had the home number of every teacher from preschool to college. And they’ve even been known to call up their grown kids’ new bosses after junior didn’t get a promotion.
But what happens when these highly groomed offspring go off and join the hundreds living in the Occupy movements camps? To whom do you file a complaint? Who gets the irate phone call?
