I predict a huge jump in flag sales ……………
recall that Queerback cabinet minister a while back complaining that at the Olympics in Japan, that there were “too many Canadian flags”.
The NDP’s majority is Queerback….and they intend to try to retain that…..
What a nasty man this new nasty man is. How on earth are Thomas and Pat going to compete for the nastiest man in Canada with a damned Canadian flag flying around them? When your nasty as these people, you want the crecent , or hammer and sickle flag, not this “Canadian” flag. Don’t worry Thomas, funding from Moscow should be along soon, someone please tell me how this party of misfits could have survived this long if it was not funded from Moscow, none of these “occupy losers” make enough real money to keep that pathetic NDPEE roadshow going this long.
I’m already flying the Israeli flag. Time to put up
a permanent Canadian one alongside it.
Tommy Boy is showing he has the political instincts of a bag of hammers.
PMSH must be secretly smiling that he has such a maroon for hhis Opposition leader.
the only flag the NDPers support is the red star or hammer and sickle.
..and the msm will be on this hot story in 3…2…oh yeah,it’s the Dippers..move along now.
Why,I think the Canadian flag would just lovely with an ORANGE star/hammer and sickle where the maple leaf used to be. Or perhaps the fleur-de-lis???
Time to move my flag from the roof to the front lawn, right beside my WRP sign.
It is amazing how fast Harper can get the opposition leader to define themselves as idiots. This is a slow pitch and the ndp struck out swinging at the same pitch three times. The bill is a feel good bill at best and the socialist took the bait. What a bunch of hose heads.
This is actually a fairly libertarian position, although I’m pretty sure that isn’t why the NDP is opposed to the bill. The federal government shouldn’t be wasting one single dime of taxpayer money doing things like encouraging people to display flags. If people want to display them they will without any action by an overreaching federal government.
I can understand where the NDBQ are comming from.Who cares?
“The federal government shouldn’t be wasting one single dime of taxpayer money doing things like encouraging people to display flags.”
Right, what kind of government would dare try and instil pride of country into the populous when there’s so many sex change operations yet to pay for?
Leftists…they never fail to prove their idiocy.
I think it’s funny. This is really the liberal flag of eastern Canada and one of the 2 biggest prov’s doesn’t want it and the NDBQ are bowing to their wishes.
Kate. I just finally smiled at the “Erect” part of your headline. Sometimes it takes me a while to “get it”.
Speaking about jokes, April 1 is tomorrow, my official prank idea is to “Moby troll” the CBC.com
Meaning we all log into the website and act like hard core super entitled Liberal/NDP Union syncophant sheeple.
Fun? more like a day job that doesn’t pay, but why not?
Echo chamber all around, I’ll remember to keep my barf bag close at hand.

I wish there was an election soon. It was sad how the NDs and Liberals had nothing constructive to say about the budget. Mulcair is involved too much with his PQ heart and not his mind. He will kill the NDs, which makes him the perfect leader.
RE: Budget. Mulcair said a lot of big scary words but said zero. The best Bob Rae could do was whine about the PCs not cutting their advertising budget while cutting the CBC.
Don’t get in the way while the NDP shoots itself in the foot.
Didn’t Jack Layton have a small canadian flag on his lapel when he pushed that girl out of the way during his visit to the bar for the Olympic men’s hockey final?
*while I agree with some of Calvin A @ 10.07 here, I doubt it cost too many dimes to vote or pass this bill. It’s feel good fluff at best, something the other parties involved with can point at the NDP and say, “the NDP doesn’t really support canadian values” ect…
I hope Mr. Mulcair is the gift that keeps giving.
This is consistent with left. Displaying flags leads to nationalism, which implies one nation is not equal to all others. We are all members of a worldwide community. And heaven forbid we display flags like Americans do.
Will they change their initials to NBD for Nouveau Bloc Démocratique or just leave it the same? Important decisions.
Now, more than ever, a reason to fly the free flag (oh wait, my tax dollars paid for it then and now due to deficit financing) we got from Tequila Sheila Copps.
Good stuff! Old NDP – socialist and unelectable, new NDP – socialist, unelectable, separatist puppets.
Not even inside the Quebec ASSEMBLY is a canadian flag next to the Speaker. Only the quebec’s provincial flag is displayed.
http://www.assnat.qc.ca/en/travaux-parlementaires/commissions/can-39-2/index.html
Yet, those quebec mps and their new ndpqf Tom Mulclair stand in house to speak for and only QUEBEC.
Why on earth would ANYONE outside of Quebec vote for this clown?
Mulcair looks so self-satisfied – typical moonbat. Even Jack Layton had half a clue about what he was up against.
I notice that the Toronto Star article concluded, “An NDP spokesman couldn’t immediately explain the party’s position”, a nice bit of honesty.
I think I am going to enjoy Thomas Mulcair! Straight out of Monty Python.
A government shouldn’t even be talking up such stupid tripe as this bill. Mulcair should’ve ordered his party to abstain from voting on the basis of it being beneath Parliament.
LAS – why is such a bill ‘beneath parliament’? After decades of denigration of ‘being Canadian’ in favour of the Liberal ideal of multiculturalism, Harper is promoting a sense of a unified national identity. What’s wrong with that?
Mulcair is doing the only thing he does: politics. He’s not interested in the well-being of Canada or Canadians. His sole interest is: power.
So, he’s after, first, as so many others on this thread have pointed out: the Quebec vote. Quebec is, as we know, adamantly anti-Canadian. Except for the money. It’s easy to be ideological when you are being economically supported by someone else, ie, the Canadian taxpayers.
And, he’s after the ethnic vote anywhere. We’ll see that Mulcair tries to increase the isolationism of ethnic groups within multiculturalism and he’s going to talk a lot about special treatment and subsidies for these groups. He’s going after ridings where there are large ethnic populations; these will be His Base.
Remember, this was also the strategy of the Liberals. Will the Liberals fight this?
I’m all for flag-waving patriotism as long as it isn’t taxpayer-funded flags being sent out to everyone who asks for them, as Jean Chretien’s gov’t did a years ago when Sheila was Heritage Min.
So it begins.
Tommy Two-faces Mucliar not realizing he isn’t a cabinet minister in the Quebec Provincial Legislature anymore.
He also seems to not read whats the bill is about.
It doesn’t force anyone to fly the flag, it keeps others from stopping someone from flying the flag….say like the Quebec legislature might try to do to insite a reaction from the ROC.
It’s clear already to me:
Mulcair’s achilles heel will be his uber earnestness.
For Harper, this will bring new meaning to Wilde’s The Importance of Being Ernest
Calvin / Libertarians.
As one myself, I have to admit we libertarians can often be overly earnest.
As many have pointed out, this is just harmless feel-good fluff and only an excessively earnest person would take the bait.
Finally, come to think of it, libertarians should support more of this fluffy stuff in lieu of the usual mischief.
But on a more earnest note, the State should not interfer with a democratic condo vote outlawing the flying of flags. It’s probably not about the Canadian flag, per se, but a matter of aesthetics. Yunno like laundry and bicycles on decks.
Harper is promoting a sense of a unified national identity. What’s wrong with that?
Simple: it’s not the government’s job or right to foster a sense of ‘national identity’. To do so is actually creepy and kinda fascist.
It’s a Liberal flag, anyway. Might represent the east but that type of maple tree doesn’t grow in the west.
Anyway, looks like a Campbell soup can label.
It took less than a week for the new NDP saviour to start unraveling everything Jack spent years on building up. Here I thought the entertainment died along with Jack. Wrong. If the first week is any indication, the “orange crush” will turn into a orange stain in less than a year. All the Liberals will have to do is keep their mouths shut to regain official opposition status.
Thomas Mulcair is a typical middle aged sour commie loser who has become an andry contrary little man.
I expect the Dips will be lucky to hold on to a dozen seats once TROC get a load of this POed little commie in his constant petulent snit over things not going the way Karl Marx predicted.
He has NOTHING to offer this nation but petulent commie anger.
NDP socialists for SLAVERY.
The NDP stands opposed to any plain common sense logic. Friday they shouted down the Bill C-310 at the report stage. Previously they wholeheartedly agreed to Bill C-310 but Friday’s reversal of logic has caused the Bill to be delayed until April 4 and then drop in precedence until the end of May; causing a Bill that should have gone to the Senate in a matter of hours to be delayed months, possibly well into the fall. What is the issue the NDP choose to flex their newfound muscle on? HUMAN TRAFFICKING. That’s our NDP socialists for SLAVERY.
Bill C-310 amends the Criminal Code by adding the current trafficking in persons offences [s.279.01, s.279.011, s.279.02, and s.279.03] to the list of offences which, if committed outside of Canada by a Canadian or permanent resident, could be prosecuted in Canada. The Bill also adds an interpretive aid for courts to provide greater clarity of the definition of exploitation in s.279.04 of the Criminal Code.
What were they thinking? Why did they agree to be part of a unanimous adoption of the Bill and then Friday grandstand their power to oppose?

“Simple: it’s not the government’s job or right to foster a sense of ‘national identity”.
Exactly what the United Nations has been advocating in their quest for a world government. If you believe what you stated…you are truly a fool.
LAS…libertarians are stupid. Well,at least the ones masquerading as libertarians trying to hide their leftard slant.Move to lessor Britanistan. You would fit right in.
ET if you had Danielle Smith’s “hubcaps” on your back I would marry you.
Transgender joke, maybe a bit risky, but freedom of expression is a core ideal of my Philosophy.

Folks, you’re being too hard on Monsieur Eclair [sic]. After all, why should a French citizen want people to fly the Canadian flag?!?
“…An NDP spokesman couldn’t immediately explain the party’s position…”
Probably a spokesman of the old NDP. No one told him he’s been reassigned to the far left.
Public Opinion, Jan. 28, 1921

Now that Canada is the world’s most inclusive Country,I think it’s high time we redo the flag.
Suggestion; one red stripe, one orange stripe, one pink stripe, one green stripe, and a blue maple leaf in the middle.
Damn,I forgot something for the Aboriginals.
LAS – as usual, we agree. I think it IS the federal government’s job to promote and enable a sense of national identity. And not, having a sense of being a citizen of a specific nation is not akin to fascism. It’s simply an individual sense of historical and spatial connection.
What we’ve had, under the Liberals, was a rejection of any national identity and instead, a focus on retaining PAST national identities, ie, multiculturalism.
fiddle – for once, you and I agree. I consider the Canadian flag truly the ugliest in the world. Its symbol, which isn’t a symbol but some kind of photocopy of a maple leaf, not only has no relevance out west or up north but it looks silly on a flag. Flags are usually made up of geometric symbolic shapes not some actual image. I agree; it does indeed look like a soup can. BUT, unfortunately, it happens to be our flag and we have to live with it.
Our flag is lame but at least it isn’t one of the many ‘stripe’ flags of Europa. Boring.
Government doesn’t foster individual anything. Are you not capable of your own sense of identity.
“I consider the Canadian flag truly the ugliest in the world.”
Nawwwww! Not even close.
Here’s a fine example:
Torres Strait Islanders Flag
Torres Strait Islanders Flag
Tell me, what do you see?
Bad link, sorry….

Perhaps it is time we did something to render Canadian citizenship meaningful. Mulcair has a French passport, Dion had a French passport, Ignatieff seems to have voted in the US, Martin registered his ships anywhere but Canada. What is it about leaders of the opposition owing allegiance to foreign countries?
infinity – wow, you’re right; that Torres Strait flag is almost as ugly as the Canadian one.
LAS – your rejection of various geometrical shapes on flags – that’s your view. I prefer symbols rather than iconic images.
LAS – having a sense of identity-as-a-citizen means having the material and conceptual factors of such citizenship. This has nothing to do with psychological identity but with historical and civic identity.
Historical identity includes the notion of membership in a kin group which includes ancestors, and also, bonds to current members of the group.
Civic identity includes the concept of membership in a civic group, a societal and economic settlement, with its laws and rules.
I consider that government has important roles in both the historical and civic identity of its population. Historically it does this by, for example, having a national day (July 1); by its Remembrance Day, by its heritage sites, etc.
Civic identity is expressed in the laws of the land, by elections, by public broadcasting of parliament.
ET: Did you misread LAS?
I believe he said it wasn’t the government’s job to foster national identity.
Did I misread your irony.
I gotta admit, I don’t much go for this boosterism.
But I’m from “the world class city” of Vancouver, which is located in the “best place on earth” province of BC so you can understand my cosmopolitan ennui.
Second try: Should the government FORBID democratic condos from voting against flag-flying which, let’s face it, can be just as much an eyesore as bicycles and laundry draped off condo decks.
Treasonous Dipper Scum!
So their true colours show through. No one can accuse the latest generation of the NDP of being national Socialists, they are obviously International Socialists.
me no dhimmi – allowing a flagpole in a condo is not the same as supporting the ‘right to fly the Canadian flag’. After all, this right does not include the spatial zone where you fly it.
So, a condo can, in my view, forbid flagpoles and/or flags. Just as they can forbid people drying their clothes on balconies or storing their bicycles on balconies.
Remember the Occupiers? They have the right to protest but that doesn’t mean that they can take over any public or private space for their protest-domain.
