Le Pen
Markets are underpricing the prospect of Marine Le Pen emerging victorious in the French election as a sea of undecided voters throws into sharp relief pronounced apathy for center-leftist Emmanuel Macron — the front-runner by a whisker — and the backlash against the European Union project.
That’s the conclusion drawn by Charles Gave, founder of Hong-Kong based asset-allocation consultancy GaveKal Research, who predicted the triumph of Donald Trump in the U.S. election, and is now betting on a win for the anti-euro National Front candidate.
“Le Pen’s momentum is a slow-moving reaction against the men of Davos — as we have seen with Brexit and Trump — but markets don’t want to believe it,” he said by phone before the first round of the French poll on April 23.
Grab a coffee: The French, Coming Apart
At the opening of his new book, Guilluy describes twenty-first-century France as “an ‘American’ society like any other, unequal and multicultural.” It’s a controversial premise–that inequality and racial diversity are linked as part of the same (American-type) system and that they progress or decline together. Though this premise has been confirmed in much of the West for half a century, the assertion will shock many Americans, conditioned to place “inequality” (bad) and “diversity” (good) at opposite poles of a Manichean moral order. This disconnect is a key reason American political discussions have turned so illogical and rancorous. Certain arguments–for instance, that raising the incomes of American workers requires limiting immigration–can be cast as either sensible or superstitious, legitimate or illegitimate, good or evil, depending on whether the person making them is deemed to be doing so on the grounds of economics or identity.
At a practical level, considerations of economics and ethnicity are getting harder to disentangle. Guilluy has spent years in and out of buildings in northern Paris (his sisters live in public housing), and he is sensitive to the way this works in France. A public-housing development is a community, yes, and one can wish that it be more diverse. But it is also an economic resource that, more and more, is getting fought over tribally. An ethnic Frenchman moving into a heavily North African housing project finds himself threatening a piece of property that members of “the community” think of as theirs. Guilluy speaks of a “battle of the eyes” fought in the lobbies of apartment buildings across France every day, in which one person or the other–the ethnic Frenchman or the immigrant’s son–will drop his gaze to the floor first.
Killing O’Reilly
William A. Jacobson: The use of organized attacks on advertisers will continue, and will be used against conservative personalities who are not accused of anything near what O’Reilly was accused of. There’s blood in the water now.

Killing O’Reilly
Fox News is a business he should not be in, he had told people before, despite its major contribution to 21st Century Fox’s bottom line –20 percent of its profits came from Fox News last year, the biggest-earning division in the company. Presumably, he meant the in-your-face world of conservative cable news with its mega personalities. Indeed, James regarded many of the people at Fox News as thuggish Neanderthals and said he was embarrassed to be in the same company with them.

Subway has filed a $210 million defamation lawsuit against the CBC alleging reports about the sandwich chain’s chicken have caused it to suffer significant sales losses.
Subway alleges the CBC acted “recklessly and maliciously” in airing a Marketplace report in February that said DNA tests suggested some chicken products served by the chain could contain only 50 per cent chicken or less.
The company further alleges the tests conducted on the chicken “lacked scientific rigour,” were conducted without appropriate methods by people without proper training and then interpreted by people who also lacked training.
It’s Not Wiretapping When The Democrats Do It
Obama Political Spying Scandal:
Was Russia, and specifically the overwrought “Russia hacked the election” narrative, used as camouflage for what was actually a political spying operation? Do you really think the Obama administration, which turned the Internal Revenue Service and the Justice Department into process cudgels for beating Obama detractors, would be above that sort of thing?

How Deep, Señor Maduro?
A teenage boy and a woman died after being shot Wednesday during massive protests in Venezuela against President Nicolas Maduro, bringing to seven the number killed this month in a mounting political crisis.
Riot police fired tear gas to force back stone-throwing demonstrators as tens of thousands of people joined protest marches in Caracas and several other cities.
The opposition has accused Maduro of letting state forces and gangs of armed thugs violently repress demonstrators as he resists opposition pressure for him to quit.
Despite Wednesday’s deadly violence, his opponents upped the ante by calling for fresh protests on Thursday.
I’m surprised it’s taken this long.

How To Think About Vladmir Putin
When Putin took power in the winter of 1999-2000, his country was defenseless. It was bankrupt. It was being carved up by its new kleptocratic elites, in collusion with its old imperial rivals, the Americans. Putin changed that. In the first decade of this century, he did what Kemal Atatürk had done in Turkey in the 1920s. Out of a crumbling empire, he rescued a nation-state, and gave it coherence and purpose. He disciplined his country’s plutocrats. He restored its military strength. And he refused, with ever blunter rhetoric, to accept for Russia a subservient role in an American-run world system drawn up by foreign politicians and business leaders. His voters credit him with having saved his country.

Not that another ONLP leader would make a difference at this point. If winning is the game (LOL!) then a leader would have to be acclaimed just so that they could have the summer circuit to glad-hand. They would have the fall session to reintroduce Liberals to moderate policy, a budget in the spring to back it up and then hope.
Reality strikes; the blood feuds that are intrinsic to any Liberal party means it will be a contested leadership. That kills the summer and half or more of the fall. There will be no time to liberalize the party away from the socialist-greenism that has taken root. Any budget in the spring will simply be a continuation rather than a remediation. Result: still a loss but maybe some furniture saved.
All of which means that it will be a large field of leadership contenders because they know they’ll be working for 2022 and not 2018 but the new leader would at least have a losing election under their belt and a full four years to figure out how to liberal again.
