Diversity Sensitivity Training

Begin lesson planhere.
Andrew McCarthy on the media template;

Nonetheless, the rigorous media practice in Phase One is to suppress any reference to Islam, the single thread that runs through virtually all modern terrorism—from New York, to Virginia, to Bali, the Djerba, to Baghdad, to Mombassa, to Tel Aviv, to Nairobi, to Dar es Salaam, to Ankara, to Paris, to Riyadh, to Amman, to Sharm el-Sheikh, to Aden, to London, to Madrid, and, now, to Toronto.

Christie Blatchford strikes a similar note: “I drove back from yesterday’s news conference at the Islamic Foundation of Toronto in the northeastern part of the city, but honestly, I could have just as easily floated home in the sea of horse manure emanating from the building.”
Imagine a 1938 story about Kristallnacht that spoke of ‘German youths’ representing ‘broad strata’ of society, and never once mentioning Hitler or National Socialism.”
SDA flashback – June 30, 2005;

Thailand: 600 dead in 2 years.
I did not know that.
While I appreciate that they have their hands full pursuing the Self-Fulfilling Prophesy Project in Iraq, one would think that our khaki-clad friends covering the international “militancy” beat might have mentioned it in passing.

Flash forward – May 31, 2006;

To date, more than 1,200 people have been killed since January 2004—a date that the media cites as the start of the insurgency (in reality it began in early 2001)—and several thousand more have been wounded. There have been three beheadings this year, bringing the total to 24.

You’d think those Thais would know better than to meddle in the Middle East.
Update – From the Department Of You Can’t Make This Stuff Up:

Before the raids came the sensitivity training: Tactical-squad Mounties learned how to properly handle Korans prior to arresting 17 terrorism suspects on the weekend.
And that’s not all. The RCMP also made sure there were clean prayer mats on hand for their suspects when they were sent to jail cells.
Then, after everything wrapped up, authorities met with a number of Muslim leaders to impress upon them that officers were going after specific individuals, not the community as a whole.

A reader writes – “I wonder if they also met with the families of the Bandidos after they arrested them.”
I look forward to the reports of how the Royal Canadian Sensitive Police will handle religious needs (his and hers and hers and hers towels?) if and when they ever decide to sweep in on the poligamist colony at Bountiful. Unless you know, “sensitvity” is a gesture extended only to those religious “communities as a whole” that exhibit a tendency to self-detonate.

Terror Cell Apprehended – Continued

(bumped to June 4 with updates)
This morning the Ottawa Sun is reporting that Parliament was on the hit list

“They were going after institutional targets,” a source said.
Sources said targets included the Parliament Buildings and the CSIS headquarters in Toronto.

The Canadian Islamic Congress is critical – not at the alleged plotters – but that the government hasn’t been “funding research on “home grown” effects of imported extremism”.
(Last week they were celebrating the CUPE boycott of those dirty joos Israel. “Home grown” effects, indeed.)

Rosie Dimanno;

It takes no sophistication to connect non-existent dots, from Mississauga to Afghanistan, from grievances nurtured in the suburbs of Toronto to a so-called global crusade against Islam, as if the West is responsible for the oppression inflicted upon Muslims, in Muslim nations, by Muslim leaders.
It requires, increasingly, little empirical evidence to excuse the radicalism of pupa militants, including those who enjoy the benefits of our own generous, inclusive and hyper-tolerant society. This is the constituency that protects — tacitly encourages — the nihilism of those driven to violent distraction by what they see as endless victimization of their tribe, a purported world-wide Islamaphobia that can only be redressed by random atrocities.
How quickly, do you think, will these arrests — the judicial process only in its infancy — cease to be about them and become primarily about us?

Glenn Reynolds has morning observations on the media spin cycle that began the instant the arrests were announced, including this comment (from one of Roger Simon’s readers);

Just like our own elites: they truly believe that – if not carefully monitored, us People will riot and string up Muslims from every lamp-post at the least provocation. In their view, the Military, especially, is certain to run amuck at any time (thus the obsessing over Abu Ghraib, and now, jumping all over Haditha) – and, of course, probably has, almost continuously, and Rumsfeld, etc has Covered it Up.
And with Bush in power, the Elites are wringing their hands, knowing that the RedNecks are rampant, uncontrolled, willing and able to do ANYTHING!!!!

June 3 commentary follows
Toronto Sun;

In a stunning development yesterday, police made a sweeping terrorist bust within the GTA and expected to make several more arrests throughout the night.
“The RCMP, CSIS and the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team arrested individuals throughout the GTA today in relation to terrorist-related offences,” confirmed RCMP spokesman Corp. Michele Paradis.
As of about 9 p.m. last night, Paradis also added “there are ongoing arrests.”
Though unconfirmed, sources have told the Sun police arrested a possible home-grown al-Qaeda terrorist cell operating in Toronto that had planned to bomb the subway as early as Monday.

Any guesses at how long it takes the usual suspects to a) downplay the story as much ado about nothing, and/or b) weave it into a conspiracy to turn Canada into Shrubhitler’s police state. Update; It’s already begun.
A news conference will begin shortly.You can listen live at 650 CKOM. On the fly:
– RCMP, along with CSIS and other security partners have arrested 12 adults and 5 young offenders who were planning a series of terrorist attacks on a variety of targets in southern Ontario.
– They’ve been charged under contributing to activity of a terrorist group, commission of firearms and explosives offenses for the benefit of a terrorist group, providing or making available property for the purpose of terrorist activities.
– 3 tons of ammonium nitrate was ordered and delivered. (the 1995 Oklahoma bombing was comleted with only 1 ton of ammonium nitrate)
– they had the capacity and intent to carry out the attacks
– All are Canadian residents from a variety of backgrounds, inspired by Al Qaeda
– Concern about what other groups may be out there, but are satisfied that the threat from this one has been removed.
(A commentor refers to “one brain trust of a reporter” asking a stupid question. Listening just now, about 4 reporters have asked successive questions directly related to the ongoing investigation, despite being told none would be entertained. That’s the beauty of listening to these things live – one gains a first hand appreciation for just how “thick” the news filter is.)
The Toronto Star is now online with a report. Those arrested:

1. Fahim Ahmad, 21, Toronto;
2. Zakaria Amara, 20, Mississauga, Ont.;
3. Asad Ansari, 21, Mississauga;
4. Shareef Abdelhaleen, 30, Mississauga;
5. Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, Mississauga;
6. Mohammed Dirie, 22, Kingston, Ont.;
7. Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston;
8. Jahmaal James, 23, Toronto;
9. Amin Mohamed Durrani, 19, Toronto;
10. Steven Vikash Chand alias Abdul Shakur, 25, Toronto;
11. Ahmad Mustafa Ghany, 21, Mississauga;
12. Saad Khalid, 19, of Eclipse Avenue, Mississauga.

(What was that quote from the news conference about the individuals not reflecting on any one community?) – here it is: “This operation does not reflect badly on any ethno-cultural group in Canada”.
FLASHBACK: 2005 – Weapons arrests at border – Who Are Dirie and Mohamed?
Considerable blogosphere coverage on this story;
Stephen Taylor has lots more, including a chilling poem.
Stop The ACLU on the internet angle. Pajamas Media has a big roundup. So does Hot Air here and here;
The Muslim Canadian Congress reaction is predictable.
Report from the courthouse.

“This operation does not reflect badly on any ethno-cultural group in Canada”.
COMMENTS POLICY REMINDER – The comments are for just that – comments and reaction. This is not a chatboard. Stay on topic, and if you wish to engage in lengthy back and forth debate with others, take it to email.

Toronto Terror Cell – Who Are Dirie and Mohamed?

Are they the same people?
Reader “Kelly Ann” gets extra marks for sharp eyes; CNN – August 13, 2005;

Ali Dirie, 22, and Yasin Mohamed, 23 — both Canadians from the Toronto area — face weapons-related charges and are in police custody in Niagara Falls, Ontario, according to a police statement. Ontario’s Provincial Weapons Enforcement Team and the Niagara Regional Police Service are investigating.

From the list of those arrested yesterday:

6. Mohammed Dirie, 22, Kingston, Ont.;
7. Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston;

That ought to be good for at least one evening of internet sleuthing.
There’s a more detailed account of the incident (scroll down) by Michelle Shephard in the Toronto Star, including a mention of a 2 year sentence. In Trudeaupia, though, there’s no way to know if they’re still behind bars – (or ever were).
UPDATE – these two are indeed, among the 12 charged, according to a CBC radio report this morning. (The report concentrated on concerns about “backlash” and stressed the “varied” backgrounds of those arrested. Don’t blame Islam – blame Diversity!)

Roggio Reports: The Rest Of The Kabul Riot Story

Via Instapundit;

The good news is I’ve safely landed in Kabul. The somewhat bad news is the UN flight to Kandahar is booked, so I will head down there on Monday. But there is plenty to do in Kabul, and I’ve already dug around a little bit about the violence in the city yesterday after a US vehicle killed 1 to 3 Afghans during a traffic accident. The consensus among the folks I spoke to is the protests after the accident were staged by groups waiting for such an event to happen. I made the comparison to the reaction by some Islamist groups in Afghanistan (and elsewhere) after the Muhammad Cartoon riots, where the “spontaneous protests” were anything but. there was agreement on this point. I will likely post about this tonight or tomorrow.
I drove through the city twice today, and it is an interesting place. The city is scarred from decades of combat, however you can see people are working to rebuild. Shops are open, people and traffic are on the streets, and there are signs of new construction and rebuilding/repair projects. I saw several “land/title offices,” as well as signs for rooms for rent. Security is tight, and it seemed as if police were on every corner, no doubt a reaction to yesterday’s events. Unfortunately my camera was packed away, but I’ll get some shots tomorrow.

I’ve seen photos of new housing developments going up in Kabul. Bill’s comments remind me that I intended to get copies of those (and others) for you.

Solidarity

CUPE Press Release;
Delegates to the CUPE Ontario convention here have voted overwhelmingly to support the international campaign of boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israel until that state recognizes the Palestinian right to self-determination.
The global campaign started last July and has been supported by many North American churches, 20 Quebec organizations, and others. The Israeli “apartheid wall” has been condemned and determined illegal under international law.
Under the resolution approved by delegates, CUPE Ontario will develop an education campaign about the issue, including Canada’s political and economic support for Israeli policies, similar to the campaign developed by CUPE British Columbia.
Canada has a free trade agreement with Israel, the only such agreement this country has outside of the western hemisphere. In Ontario, the liquor control board carried more than 30 Israeli wines, many produced in the occupied Golan Heights.
“Boycott, divestment and sanction worked to end apartheid in South Africa,” said Katherine Nastovski, chair of the CUPE Ontario international solidarity committee. “We believe the same strategy will work to enforce the rights of Palestinian people, including the right of refugees to return to their homes and properties.”

“Shot To Pieces”

Glenn Reynolds, on the abysmal quality of reporting coming out of Afghanistan, where there seems to be a concerted effort on the part of the mainstream press to convince the public that the Taliban are reasserting control;

[T]he news reports, rather exaggerated to begin with, are of the form “Dozens killed in renewed fighting,” without mentioning that most of those killed are people who should be killed.

He has links to more.

Amir Taheri Statement

Amir Taheri stands by his story;

Regarding the dress code story it seems that my column was used as the basis for a number of reports that somehow jumped the gun.
As far as my article is concerned I stand by it.The law has been passed by the Islamic Majlis and will now be submitted to the Council of Guardians. A committee has been appointed to work out the modalities of implementation.
Many ideas are being discussed with regard to implementation, including special markers, known as zonnars, for followers of Judaism, Christianity and Zoroastrianism, the only faiths other than Islam that are recognized as such. The zonnar was in use throughout the Muslim world until the early 20th century and marked out the dhimmis, or protected religious minorities. ( In Iran it was formally abolished in 1908).
I have been informed of the ideas under discussion thanks to my sources in Tehran, including three members of the Majlis who had tried to block the bill since it was first drafted in 2004.
I do not know which of these ideas or any will be eventually adopted. We will know once the committee appointed to discuss them presents its report, perhaps in September.
Interestingly, the Islamic Republic authorities refuse to issue an official statement categorically rejecting the concept of dhimmitude and the need for marking out religious minorities.
I raised the issue not as a news story, because news of the new law was already several days old, but as an opinion column to alert the outside world to this most disturbing development.

A Yellow Strip Of Cloth

“I feel it’s 1938 again – Bernard Lewis *

More: Joyner has been following the updates (as have readers in the comments).
Damian Penny;

The lefty bloggers, not surprisingly, are jumping up and down with faux outrage about righty bloggers (including myself) writing about this untrue story.
So, guys, has Karl Rove been indicted yet?

Jonah Goldberg;

Fascism — as opposed to its German variant Nazism — is not primarily, fundamentally or at least necessarily about bigotry, toward Jews or anybody else. It is about collectivism, in one form or another. It is about imposing — with both the carrot of socialism and the stick of the police state — uniformity on the entire body politic, to get all the oars pulling at the same time, in the same direction. The fact that the Iranian regime wants to enforce a national dress code which is “authentically” Iranian says more about their fascistic impulses than the regime’s anti-Semitism. Not only does anti-Semitism predate fascism by a lot of centuries, but anti-Semitism is not unique to fascism nor is it always present in fascist movements. What is always present is the desire to enforce conformity and uniformity on the masses. So breathe your sigh of relief if your concern is the maltreatment of Jews in Iran (though a small sigh it must be). But if your concern was that Iran might be fascistic, then the debunking of the yellow star story should not allay your fears at all.

An Islamist Victory In The Netherlands

Peaktalk;

The emergency debate turned into a marathon session of the Dutch lower house and early in the morning an apparently emotional Immigration Minster Verdonk accepted two separate motions to reconsider revoking Hirsi Ali’s Dutch nationality. She will now have six weeks to see if there are mitigating circumstances that will allow Hirsi Ali to remain a Dutch citizen.
What to say? It is a moral victory for our embattled heroine that much is certain, but at this point it is of course of little help to her. As she mentioned during her press conference yesterday, it was the court ruling that led to the eviction from her apartment a few weeks back that forced her decision to resign from parliament and leave the lowlands in search for greener pastures overseas. Upon joining AEI she will most likely be in a position to apply for US citizenship and consider her Dutch passport as a tainted relic that will forever remind her of her dreadful last few months in The Netherlands.

Which reminds me – in the wake of Gwyn Morgan’s treatment over remarks made about immigrant gang violence someone really ought to get opinions on the record about “the success of Dutch multiculturalism” from Flapjack Layton and some of those eager Liberal leadership hopefuls.

Atwar Bahjat Video Hoax

A Jawa Report exclusive: video circulated purporting to record the beheading of Atwar Bahjat is a hoax. (Bahjat was an Iraqi television journalist abducted and murdered in February.)

On Sunday, May 7th, the Times reported that they had received a low-quality video of Atwar Bahjat being slowly beheaded.That video is now being circulated on the internet as the “Atwar Bahjat” beheading video.
The Jawa Report can reveal that the Times and Halal Jabar, the author of the article, are victims of a hoax. The video actually shows the gruesome murder of a Nepalese man by the Army of Ansar al-Sunna in Iraq from August of 2004. The man was one of 12 victims executed by the terrorist organization–the other 11 were shot (original story, video, and images of 12 Nepalese murdered Iraq here).
[…]
The Times reported that the film was delivered to them by Sunni insurgents and said that it had been found on the mobile phone of a dead member of Shia militant. The article erroneously tries to blame Bahjat’s murder on Shia militias, and uses the false video as evidence of growing civil strife in Iraq.
The video, in fact, actually shows an “infidel” being murdered by a Sunni Salaafist terrorist organization with ties to al Qaeda.

There’s quite a lot more at Rusty’s, along with a host of linked commentary. But do be forewarned, there are also graphic images on the page, though they are preceded by clear warnings so that you can avoid viewing them if you choose.

” you can believe in stones as long as you do not throw them at me”

Thanks to reader Herman Dost for pointing out this transcript of a February interview with Arab-American psychologist Wafa Sultan (with Al-Jazeera TV);

Wafa Sultan: The clash we are witnessing around the world is not a clash of religions, or a clash of civilizations. It is a clash between two opposites, between two eras. It is a clash between a mentality that belongs to the Middle Ages and another mentality that belongs to the 21st century. It is a clash between civilization and backwardness, between the civilized and the primitive, between barbarity and rationality. It is a clash between freedom and oppression, between democracy and dictatorship. It is a clash between human rights, on the one hand, and the violation of these rights, on other hand. It is a clash between those who treat women like beasts, and those who treat them like human beings. What we see today is not a clash of civilizations. Civilizations do not clash, but compete.
[…]
Host: I understand from your words that what is happening today is a clash between the culture of the West, and the backwardness and ignorance of the Muslims?
Wafa Sultan: Yes, that is what I mean.
[…]
Host: Who came up with the concept of a clash of civilizations? Was it not Samuel Huntington? It was not Bin Laden. I would like to discuss this issue, if you don’t mind…
Wafa Sultan: The Muslims are the ones who began using this expression. The Muslims are the ones who began the clash of civilizations. The Prophet of Islam said: “I was ordered to fight the people until they believe in Allah and His Messenger.” When the Muslims divided the people into Muslims and non-Muslims, and called to fight the others until they believe in what they themselves believe, they started this clash, and began this war. In order to stop this war, they must reexamine their Islamic books and curricula, which are full of calls for takfir and fighting the infidels.
My colleague has said that he never offends other people’s beliefs. What civilization on the face of this earth allows him to call other people by names that they did not choose for themselves? Once, he calls them Ahl Al-Dhimma, another time he calls them the “People of the Book,” and yet another time he compares them to apes and pigs, or he calls the Christians “those who incur Allah’s wrath.” Who told you that they are “People of the Book”? They are not the People of the Book, they are people of many books. All the useful scientific books that you have today are theirs, the fruit of their free and creative thinking. What gives you the right to call them “those who incur Allah’s wrath,” or “those who have gone astray,” and then come here and say that your religion commands you to refrain from offending the beliefs of others?
I am not a Christian, a Muslim, or a Jew. I am a secular human being. I do not believe in the supernatural, but I respect others’ right to believe in it.
Dr. Ibrahim Al-Khouli: Are you a heretic?
Wafa Sultan: You can say whatever you like. I am a secular human being who does not believe in the supernatural…
Dr. Ibrahim Al-Khouli: If you are a heretic, there is no point in rebuking you, since you have blasphemed against Islam, the Prophet, and the Koran…
Wafa Sultan: These are personal matters that do not concern you.
[…]
Wafa Sultan: Brother, you can believe in stones, as long as you don’t throw them at me. You are free to worship whoever you want, but other people’s beliefs are not your concern, whether they believe that the Messiah is God, son of Mary, or that Satan is God, son of Mary. Let people have their beliefs.
[…]
Wafa Sultan: The Jews have come from the tragedy (of the Holocaust), and forced the world to respect them, with their knowledge, not with their terror, with their work, not their crying and yelling. Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th centuries to Jewish scientists. 15 million people, scattered throughout the world, united and won their rights through work and knowledge. We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people. The Muslims have turned three Buddha statues into rubble. We have not seen a single Buddhist burn down a Mosque, kill a Muslim, or burn down an embassy. Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people, and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them.

A Victory For “Progressive” European Human Rights

A court action in Holland by neighbors of Somali born Dutch MP and critic of Islam Ayaan Hirsi Ali argued that her mere presence in the apartment complex was a violation of the European Treaty for Human Rights.
Courts found for the plaintiffs ruling her presence to be a “severe violation of one’s private life”. She must vacate her home.

“Now, officially she is a pariah. She cannot live anymore in a house or apartment, only on military bases. The orthodox Islamists and the progressive multiculti activists succeeded in isolating this remarkable person from society. Shame upon my country.”

Pieter Dorsman has been following the story closely, of course;

It’s five days now since the contentious court ruling, but all I can see in the Dutch and international media landscape is a ghastly silence. The blogosphere picked it up, looked at it and moved the story forward, the rest of the world didn’t care.

More commentary from D.J. Teeboom, Pipeline News;

Sixty years have passed but not much has changed. People still ask the police to remove their persecuted neighbors instead of giving them shelter. And why not? People are followers and in this case they simply follow the behavior of their leaders. Holland is a country where everybody loves to talk about solidarity yet no solidarity was shown with the Danish cartoonists. They get upset here about baby seals getting killed in Canada without ever loosing any sleep over the tens of thousands of women who are murdered each year due to honor killings. Each year they promise us ‘never again’ and they can do it with a straight face while everybody knows that Rwandan and Darfuri genocides can go on unopposed. It’s not that the UN does nothing, it is much worse than that. Jan Pronk, now a UN official, negotiates with the Sudanese government while they are they ones who have hired the Janjaweed to exterminate the population of Darfur. Instead of treating that government as a bunch of criminals he legitimatizes them by negotiating with them. One leads by example and when our leaders behave like cowards it’s no wonder the people behave like that as well.

What’s He Up To?

Mu’ammar Qadhafi has never struck me as being particularly devout. In this interview with Al Jazeera though, he shares his thoughts on theology, the Danish cartoons and the future of Europe. It’s “rah-rah Islam” from beginning to end;

Mu’ammar Al-Qadhafi: “Some people believe that Muhammad is the prophet of the Arabs or Muslims alone. This is a mistake. Muhammad is the prophet of all people.”
[]
“He superseded all previous religions. If Jesus were alive when Muhammad was sent, he would have followed him. All people must be Muslims.”
[…]
“We have 50 million Muslims in Europe. There are signs that Allah will grant Islam victory in Europe – without swords, without guns, without conquests. The fifty million Muslims of Europe will turn it into a Muslim continent within a few decades.
[…]
“Europe is in a predicament, and so is America. They should agree to become Islamic in the course of time, or else declare war on the Muslims.”

Qadhafi is playing here to a domestic audience – is he concerned that Libya’s recent capitulation to the west may have placed his military dictatorship on the “to do” list of Islamists?
I decided to ask Michael Totten privately about this, and his response points to a book by Judith Miller, written in the 1980’s.

It’s hard to say why that guy does what he does and says what he says. Libya is one of the most opaque countries in the world. That said, I think your assumption is probably the best one. He is very afraid of lslamists.
I know Judith Miller is persona-non-grata right now with pretty much everyone, but she wrote a fascinating 50-page essay about Libya and Uncle Moammar in her book “God Has 99 Names.” He told her, back when Clinton was president, that he was desperately trying to get Clinton to “save the world” from the Islamists. It makes for fascinating pre-911 reading.

As I said, Qadhafi has never struck me as devout.

Al Qaeda Changing Tactics?

James Joyner looks beyond the bluster in the latest al-Zawahri declaration of victory over US forces in Iraq;

Every soldier and officer in the Pakistani military should know that Musharraf is throwing them into the burner of civil war in return for the bribes he is getting from the United States, al-Zawahri said For this reason I call on every soldier and officer in the Pakistani army to disobey the orders of his commanders to kill Muslims in Pakistan or Afghanistan or otherwise he will be confronted by the mujahedeen,

Clearly, undermining the support of moderate Muslim regimes has been a key focus of al Qaeda leadership in these recent videos. Whats so interesting about that is that Osama bin Ladens great achievement in forming al Qaeda, according to Michael Scheuers analysis, was in persuading disparate Islamist groups who were focused on the apostasy of their own domestic regimes to unite in opposition to the West. This seems a reversal of that course.

And this observation at Gateway Pundit;

It sounds like Zawahiri did not appreciate the dinner party blast that targeted him earlier this year and killed Midhat Mursi, al Qaeda’s master bomb maker and chemical weapons expert .

Probably not.

CIC – What Does The “C” Stand For?

For the Canadian Islamic Congress, the inclusion of the word “Canadian” in their name is only a passing afterthought – a reference to the mailing address. Not that their loyalties were ever seriously in question;

Islamic Congress Encourages Iranian Nuclear Technology For Civilian Use And Calls On Canada To Cooperate With Iran In Developing Non-weapons-calibre Energy

In related news – in a move designed to send the strongest of signals to the increasingly hostile Ahmadinejad government, the UN has made Iran vice-chair of the Disarmament Commission. I agree with Senator Frist’s commentors – the time to reform the United Nations has come and gone. Time to evict them from North American soil and seek new funding from those dysfunctional tribal governments and one-party dictatorships they so love to put in charge of things.
