Are they the same people?
Reader “Kelly Ann” gets extra marks for sharp eyes; CNN – August 13, 2005;
Ali Dirie, 22, and Yasin Mohamed, 23 — both Canadians from the Toronto area — face weapons-related charges and are in police custody in Niagara Falls, Ontario, according to a police statement. Ontario’s Provincial Weapons Enforcement Team and the Niagara Regional Police Service are investigating.
From the list of those arrested yesterday:
6. Mohammed Dirie, 22, Kingston, Ont.;
7. Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston;
That ought to be good for at least one evening of internet sleuthing.
There’s a more detailed account of the incident (scroll down) by Michelle Shephard in the Toronto Star, including a mention of a 2 year sentence. In Trudeaupia, though, there’s no way to know if they’re still behind bars – (or ever were).
UPDATE – these two are indeed, among the 12 charged, according to a CBC radio report this morning. (The report concentrated on concerns about “backlash” and stressed the “varied” backgrounds of those arrested. Don’t blame Islam – blame Diversity!)

Only one evening? I’m afraid we’re going to be doing this for a very long time to come, for the threat isn’t going to be neutralized overnight, nor will it ever be completely eliminated.
Nevertheless, all who believe in freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights must necessarily continue to push for the elimination of all threats thereto. We must demand continuing action such as we see in Afghanistan, Iraq and now in Toronto.
Our new government is apparently doing its job. Let’s help them!
More yet needs to be done. Much more. It’s going to get worse, not better, regardless of what we do or don’t do. But we must fight.
Talk, fine. But the enemy uses that as a stalling tactic. We know this.
This is what happens when a country goes to war every citizen becomes a target. How many afghani women and children have died?
I don’t recall any court convicting these guys of anything yet. How many is this now, that they’ve arrested in the past 5 years? They charge people but never bring them to trial.
Was this a bunch of school kids talking tough on the internet?
Good hit, Kelly Ann! 🙂
Now THAT is some interesting and pertinent information: These individuals recently arrested at the US-Canadian border for attempting to smuggle guns into Canada.
Somehow, I suspect that The Usual Suspects in the MSM won’t have quite the sharp eyes or be quite as energetic as Kelly Ann in doing their research as this case goes forward into the courts and MSM coverage.
(What else is new? They couldn’t see … or didn’t want to see … the slightest inkling of all that Liberal fraud and malfeasance over the last decade either.)
Looks like the Toronto Star has done their homework. They’ve linked ’em.

After what I have witnessed of the blogosphere recently, and this site in particular, the MSM must be monitoring pretty closely and consistently nowadays for leads!
I just love it when some passionate amatuers outperform the supposed pros!…Well done!
Thank God this attack was thwarted. It could have been as bad as 9/11.
For a cell this large to operate, it needs an intelligent division of labor, resources with which to prepare the development of a weapon, intel with expertise to recognize a target site and calculate a plan of attack.
This cell probably has been acting for a long period of time through covert networks established for this purpose. (More than likely, others will be using those networks.) They very proabably are connected to a larger entity through drop points and cut-out agents.
In Canada one wonders if some of the financial revenues come from drug financing.
In the US, a lot of people who never knew who Paul Martin was now know and appreciate Stephen Harper.

UncleMeat.wordpress.com posted that, and it talks about the guns bust.
When you are young you are idealistic. How did these people get their idealism so mixed up? Was it their mullahs? Was it their personal experience of prejudice because of their names?
In any event, this could be very serious indeed. They had enough explosives to do horrible destruction and perhaps even of a catastrophic nature.
The city of Pickering, pop 80,000 borders Toronto, specifically Scarborough, pop 500,000. Pickering was where the accused terrorists were initially jailed. A few short kilometers away is one of the largest Nuclear Plants in Canada.
Was this the target? Could a truck or trucks with 3 tons of chemical explosive be enough to destroy the Nuclear Plant causing not only a power emergency but also a radiation emergency?
I have been watching CTV and CBC news and have to say I am bloody angry. Why can’t these folks call it like it is. Not alleged, not ethno-neutral, just bloody terrorists would could have and would have killed a lot of people. Every network should carry the terrorists pictures and the pictures of these guys supporters. Stop beating around the bush and tell like it really is. no one can explain away or mitigate the crasy behaviour of terrorists and we should not try to. Deal with them harshly and do it now!
There is more on Dirie and Mohamed in this Toronto Star story. (a little more than half way down)
http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&c=Article&cid=1149285034044&call_pageid=976163513378&col=969048863474
Fahim Ahmad, who was arrested as part of yesterday’s sweep, was living with his wife and children in a Scarborough apartment in August 2005, while authorities were watching him closely. The 22-year-old allegedly rented a car for two Toronto-area men to go to the U.S.
[…]
Officers later found two loaded handguns taped to Dirie’s inner thighs – a Millennium PT 19mm and a .380 Calibre Jennings. In his socks they found a magazine for a semi-automatic handgun and “several rounds of ammunition,” according to the court transcripts.
Both men, who are landed immigrants, had minor criminal records and told the court they were buying the guns for their own “protection.” They pleaded guilty last October and were both given two-year sentences.
So it couldn’t possibly be the same people that were arrested last night because they are currently serving two year sentences for smuggling guns. Unless of course they aren’t actually in jail serving those sentences.
One thing for sure…they were planning to inflict massive damage..if not Pickering, maybe the slow-poke at RMC….great….now my children are potentially at risk…..how many other cells are out there???
I wonder if the pair of them were caught when the went to register their AK-47s in New Brunswick?
That is, “when they went…”
“Was this a bunch of school kids talking tough on the internet?” from neutralsam, June 3, 2006 10:41 PM:
Are you kidding? Talking tough is one thing but ordering three tons of ammonium nitrate is something entirely different. This kind of attempt at wrapping evildoers in cotten batten (why? because they belong to an ethnic minority, because they’re “young”?) really stinks.
The ironic thing is that one of the primary targets was the CSIS Toronto HQ directly across the street from the CBC on Front Street.
Will the CBC knobs working there say “Holy crap, they almost killed all of us – the good guys” or will they finally get it through their head that there are no exempts.
new kid on the block
I didn’t wrap them in anything–you did.
I was simply thinking out loud. Asking the obvious I guess. To you they are simply evildoers to lock up–end of story. I am glad the police at least will wonder as I do, why? how? etc. To me, that is more interesting than the cut and dried story of “terrorists are caught”. To me, now it becomes interesting. How can Canadian kids in one of the best countries in the world ever decide to want to destroy even a little of it??
To me THAT is the part of the story that is most interesting.
Okay, I was sooo surprised to see the imam of the local (5 mins walk from my house) mosque, Salehedin Islamic Centre, named Mr. Hindy in the TV trying to defend terrorists by claiming that all these are attacks against Muslims. He must have had some connection with the people being arrested. The Police has to be tough!!! Straight up arrest all those people, who try to defend the terrorists!!! No question should be asked! We should learn from the mistake the British police made by the name of holy freedom of speech.
Just catching up , no time to read. Was the Nuclear Reactor site at Pickering a pos. target?
Does anybody think maybe the TTC “strike” the other day might even be connected to this? Did some of the TTC workers hear that something was about to happen and refuse to show up to work? It seemed kind of strange at the time how it was an illegal strike with no prior warning. Then a few days later we get that explosion in the Toronto subway that was passed off as an electrical fire, and now this. Maybe just coincidence but it seems strange how all these things happened just a few days apart.
Guys, there is something afoot here..there are just too many coincidences in the last week to not warrant any other conclusion…I think we had better be braced for an attack against our homeland..this is going to get ugly..
Just received an e-mail from a friend in Paris France..apparantly they are all over the story over there..
Re TTC: One of the articles I read today implies that this amount of fertilizer could only be delivered by the truckload, so it’s unlikely the subway was the intended target.
Re Same Two Guys? If it were the same two guys, they should still be in jail until Oct. 2007, according to the article, but as Kate implies regarding Trudeaupia, who knows? Did they do any time at all?
Re Talking Tough on the Internet: It seems to me that that these “kids” have never seen the Middle East. (At least not lately.) These are Canadian 20-somethings from Mississauga. You may well recall the passion of your twenties, the exuberance of youth, big ideas, lots of energy, searching for a cause and a hero. These young men are ripe for indoctrination. I fear this will or has become a common International ocurrance. My greatest fear, is that any idiot could walk into a mall with a backpack and blow up 200 people. Unfortunately, I think we’ll be seeing suicide bombings right here in North America, and not nearly as sophisticated as flying planes into buildings.
Was the name of the suicide bomber at Tim Hortons ever released, wasn’t that close to a subway entrance/exit. Maybe the rcmp had info something was going to happen and in order to stop it staged a strike. The smoke in the subway is iffy, anyone see the piece that fell on the track. The mayor said it was something that happened often. Anyone remember that. Anyone see or hear Dalton today. There is more to this story than has been reported, and I am sure others are being watched. Those arrested will appear in court on 06,06,06. How long did the raid take to plan. That is not something done in a day. Another question I have is, how do we know that all those dressed in black, with nothing but their eyes showing are women. Are they searched before going into Court. Muslims are concerned about a backlash against them, but I have yet to hear them mention any outrage about the backlash against cdns with a terrorist attack.
This would make an interesting poll question: “In the event of an imminent terrorist threat, who would you rather have as Prime Minister: a Conservative, a Liberal, or an NDP?
If I were a Raghead living in Toronto right now I’d keep my head down, take off my Bhurka or whatever, cos if I come to Toronto, I’m not sure what I might do, if ya get my drift. I’m sick of left wing, Liberal asshole bullshit. I’m too old for this shit and ready to kick some ass. So if Islamorfascist wants a piece of Canada, come and see me. Ya want my friggin address, reply to this, and I’ll get in touch. But ya better be ready asscap.
But I’m in Vancouver and I’m told there is no such as a terrorist.
To: new kid on the block
Question: To me, now it becomes interesting. How can Canadian kids in one of the best countries in the world ever decide to want to destroy even a little of it??
Answer: Are you a Muslim? Is Canada a Muslim Theocracy? Is polo played with a dead goat the national sport or is (Hocky Edmonton in 2006 sorry “Canes”) If you aren’t Muslim then you are an infidel Islam only has three ways to treat Infidel
Convert them, Tax them and oppress them, Kill them… Well you’re not going to convert, you don’t live in a Muslim Islamofacist Theocracy therefore the only other option is to kill you.
If you are wondering if I am telling the truth pick up a copy of the Koran and read it from front to back something that few Muslims have ever done
To David in Atlanta Ga: You targetted the wrong contributer…it was Steve D. who asked the silly question, not NKOTB. Your question is valid, just for a different person. But I’m sure that Steve D. will, in the days/weeks ahead, just end up passing this off as something done by the CIA.
To Rico: Your comments are wholly inappropriate and I believe that most all SDA readers / contributers would join me in denouncing such statements. Comments promoting or inciting violence and hatred against a “group” must always be considered inappropriate. I recognize your anger, but that type of anger is potentially what is propelling these terrorist suspects.
To Cheri: The targets that have been mentioned in the MSM were the CSIS offices in Toronto (near the CN Tower, they say) and the Parliament buildings…no mention of Pickering.
To Kursk and TJ: I would caution against paranoia…there is NO reason to believe that either the wildcat strike or the subway problem were in any way related. Had the TTC strikers been fearing an attack, they would have screamed that from the rooftops and would STILL be on strike today…if anything, those incidents may be related to one another, but I can’t see how it they would be related at all to the terrorist story.
To Neutralsam: How’s about not providing any more comments until you shift your brain out of neutral and into drive…hmmmm? I always wondered why you would call yourself NEUTRALsam when you are obviously so biased…then I realized you must be referring to what gear your brain is permanently stuck in.
david in atlanta ga
Yeah David you did a good job in explaining the 17 arrested…i guess. Now I have another silly question. How come it was only 17 when Canada has 1.8 million Muslims?
We should keep an eye out for which Liberal candidates accept Muslim cash in the leadership race, lest they be swayed on important matters like foreign policy, national security, and immigration. Personally, I am heartened to see that great man of Liberal style open immigration – Joe Volpe – has accepted so much Jewish support, particularly among Jewish children:
“The Shechtmans, their 11-year-old twins and 14-year-old son each gave the maximum $5,400 donation to Volpe’s campaign.
Volpe, the former immigration minister, said the kids heard him speak during the last election at Bialik Hebrew Day School in Toronto and found him compelling.”
After all, some are saying that these arrests are the direct result of Trudeaupian open-doors immigration policy; surely, given today’s world, a Jew wouldn’t contribute cash to a candidate who would advocate open immigration and multiculturalism that ultimately would lead to Muslim terrorists operating in Canada, and a situation where CSIS can only screen 10% of immigrants. Right?
🙂
Further reading: “High Noon to Midnight
Why Current Immigration Policy
Dooms American Jewry”:
“Of the manifold concerns about immigration felt by all Americans and American Jews in particular, the way it fuels Muslim immigration is most worrying. The May 14, 2003, Globe & Mail announced that Muslims outnumber Jews in Canada, noting this demographic shift “could ultimately affect [Canada’s] position toward the protracted Middle East conflict.”
Muslim ascendancy in Canada is a harbinger of things to come in America, with potentially enormous impact for both American Jewry and American foreign policy. According to the 1991 Canadian Census, there were 25 percent more Jews in Canada than Muslims. Within a single decade that demographic advantage was erased. According to the 2001 census, the Muslim population of Canada exceeded the Jewish population by 75 percent.”

“OTTAWA – About 90 per cent of immigration applicants from Pakistan and Afghanistan hotbeds for Islamic fundamentalism and central in the fight against terrorism haven’t been adequately screened for security concerns over the past five years, Canada’s spy agency said Monday.”

“How did these people get their idealism so mixed up? Was it their mullahs? Was it their personal experience of prejudice because of their names?”Posted by: steve d.
sd,
I suggest you take a month off from blogging and instead read the Koran. It will be a win/win situation. You may become enlightened and we will at least be spared your uninformed inane comments.
Let calmness prevail.
You and I, John Q Citizen are the most important element here. The question is; Are we as alert as the feeds salespeson who sold the Ammonium niterate?
That perceptive person is the hero here. All the other agencies taking so much credit are due some measure of respect for not fumbling the ball. For doing their job as expected.
The one person who correctly suspects something not quite normal regarding this one sale of fertilizer is the one person hundreds owe their lives to.
During the press release/interview there was a detailed mention of several Canadian agencies all taking credit for preventing a terrorist plot.
I do not recall any mention of the alert person who picked up the telephone and called one of those agencies. TG
Terry Gain
Perhaps you can point me to your words of wisdom. I do so want to learn from someone sooo wise as yourself. To date I have only seen the kindergarten you. Please show me the great wisdom posts so that I won’t have to read so much inane uninformed opinion.
By letting Dirie and Muhamed go in August 2005, and trackng their whereabouts, CSIS could then discover who else was involved – hence the 17, so far, who were rounded up.
Thanks for setting david in atlanta straight, Hassle: I try not to make asinine statements like steve d. (And I won’t answer any of your inane responses steve d. I agree with Terry Gain’s advice to you: go get educated.)
Cheri: There was some talk about the possibility of the nuclear reactor (or whatever it is) in Pickering being a target because one or more of the men arrested live in or near Pickering…
cheri
It is all speculation. The police have said nothing. They have only said that the Toronto public transit wasn’t a target. NOTHING was said about what was a target. We are all just speculating.
TG
The Toronto Star reports that they had been following this group from an early stage in 2004. They were picked up on the internet, they were angry and talked of violence. So they were monitored. The Ammonium Nitrate was the final “piece de resistence” by the police, a sting, which put the final nail in the coffin of the group.
I see the whiny and disingenuous “if-only-we-weren’t-in-Afghanistan/Iraq-we-wouldn’t-be-targets” routine popping up again (“neutralsam” of course).
Folks, we are stuck with this particular form Islamist extremism for the foreseeable future no matter what we do (unless we decide to opt for sharia law I suppose).
The West is the target. Point final, mes amis!
“By Irshad Manji
At the World Economic Forum in January, I observed something revealing. In a session about the U.S. religious right, a cartoonist satirized one of America’s most influential Christian ministers, Pat Robertson. In the audience, chuckling with the rest of us, was a prominent British Muslim. But his smile disappeared the moment we were shown a cartoon that ridiculed Muslim clerics.”
http://www.muslim-refusenik.com/letters.html#wsj_2006_02_04
Steve you may be simplifing an underlying problem with Islam , you may be wise to challenge your own thinking, rather than challenge others for the time being?
I wonder how they were funded – three tons on fertilizer isn’t cheap, plus the rented cars, buying guns etc.
They might have been paying their own way, but I am curious to know if they received any money from a mosque, a Ssudi funded mullah, or Ali Hindy or any Muslim Association, Congress tec.
The Khadrs certainly did, they (wink, wink) accepted charitable donations.
I think we should all be grateful that these guys were aprehended–and keep our eyes wide open.
Steve is the kind of guy that makes you thankful that he doesn’t work for any of the agencies that stopped this act of terrorism. He would have let them get away with it as it seems their rights are more important to him than many innocent lives.
Yesterday he said, “SO WHAT” to Islamic-fundies gathering THREE TONS of fertilizer…
Where his moral compass is pointing I can only guess … towards the east?
As usual, backhoe at Free Republic is logging the articles and info on these events.
IMHO, backhoe and the work he does will go down in history.
Here is one of the many informative links I followed from backhoe.

Has anyone seen if Howard Moscoe, Toronto city councilor responsible for the Toronto Transit Commission, said anything about this?
Previously he said:
“The terrorists first would have to find where Toronto is before they attacked it. Canada is not as vulnerable as the U.S. or Britain or Spain. We don’t have any troops to pull out of Iraq.”
http://www.torontosun.com/News/TorontoAndGTA/2006/06/01/1609419-sun.html
I think Lenin had a name for this but it escapes me now…
ldd
The rights that protect them also protect the rest of us, or not. If they are found guilty it will be because we tried them fairly according to law. Lynching is never a good thing if you want to claims you live in a civilized society.
The criminal is never civilized but we must be our freedom depends on it. You can choose Fascism of course. It is an option.
Mugs
The underlying problem with Islam is that it is being taken over by “inquisition” type minds. We have hate laws. What we need is Muslims and the like to step forward when they hear hate talk in the Mosques or wherever their leadership talks.
Free speech has limits and the line is at hate. These teens that were arrested were fed hate, by whom?? Islam, like any religion, can be hijacked by radicals. Can you name a religion that hasn’t? If Islam were the only religion to be so hijacked then you may have a point. I think perhaps it is merely the latest religion to be used by an inquisition type mentality
qwerty:
I believe the term you are looking for is “useful idiots”. It was either Lenin or Stalin, describing this particular mindset. 😉
So where are these people getting their money? I would hope that their bank accounts etc would now be screened and examined and all moneys that flowed into them should be traced as much as possible. I worry that just by shopping at a local Macs store am I supporting terrorism??
This isn’t an attack on Canada, says Imam Aly Hindy.
“This is an attack on the Muslim community. Canada has the best Muslim community, we are very safe and peaceful,” he said at the centre.”
“We are abusing our boys for the sake of pleasing (U.S. President) George Bush,” Mr. Hindy said outside the courtroom.
Why do uninformed incomcompetant Liberals like Moscoe hold positions of authority like chairman of the TTC?
Comment from **Proud to be Canadian**

Never mind the responses from Miller – Howard Moscoe, TTC chairman was
interviewed and his words came back to bite him in his big ass – that
terrorists could never find the TTC.
This was in response to the subway bombings in London last summer.

Guess what, Howard – terrorists found the TTC and thank God that their plot
was foiled.

Just what I wanted to say. TG
If 11 yr olds can support a liberal candidate to the tune of 5400.00, it is not unreasonable to assume a muslim terrorist could also come up with that much money. Gee, 5 young offenders times 5400.00 could maybe buy 3T of fertilizer. On QP a liberal Derrik Lee says there is the suspicision of a sting operation and so the whole case may be null and void. Now the muslim on the program is blaming bush and blair. This investigation has been ongoing for at least 18 mos, that puts it into martins time. Lee mentioned sting and young offenders in the same sentence. To me, the message being sent is, the rcmp got some under 18 boys to buy 3T of fertilizer. Apparently this sting story broke yesterday afternoon.
Canada became a target when there was opposition to allowing the Khdars to return to Canada. The Globe & Mail had a stmt from a high ranking supporter of OBL warning Canada we were mean to them. It would be nice to see the Globe reprint that article and the comments to it. Remember Chretain went to Pakistan or someplace and personally intervened for the release of the father, who later killed and was killed in a firefight. Remember Mrs K bragging that OBL attended her daughters wedding. How is she and her family being funded in Canada. And, did the elder son ever get his passport to travel to the USA. Listen to the tapes and read all the stmts by this terrorist and his henchment. They are out to destroy our civilization and way of life, and convert the world to Islam. If you want to live like it was in the 12th century, continue to feel sorry for this bunch of terrorists. Can’t wait to see Belinda and C. Parrish in burkas, and denied the right of supporting gay marriage and abortion. Poor Scott will be hung along with all other gays in our government.
