Average Nonsense
Economist Frank Shostak delves into the perplexing issue of governments attempting to discern an “average” price level for the economy or calculating GDP “growth”. In a nutshell, the whole idea is nuts.
Suppose two transactions were conducted: In the first transaction, one TV set is exchanged for $1,000; in the second transaction, one shirt is exchanged for $40. The price or in the first transaction is $1000/1 TV set. The price in the second transaction is $40/1 shirt. In order to calculate the “average price,” we must add these two ratios together and divide them by two. But $1000/1 TV set cannot be added to $40/1 shirt, implying that it is not possible to establish the “average price.”
The employment of various sophisticated methods to calculate the “average price” cannot bypass the essential issue that it is not possible to establish an average price of various goods and services. Accordingly, various price indices that government statisticians compute are simply arbitrary numbers. If price deflators are meaningless, so is the real GDP statistic.

Humour is often in the eye of the beholder. For example, I’ve never found The Office at all funny but think that Fawlty Towers is the greatest TV comedy series ever. Other people clearly have different opinions.

The oilpatch should take note, because what Peterson is being subjected to is pretty much exactly what oil and gas companies in particular will be subjected to when it comes to Bill C-69. The complaint process is almost identical. Anyone without a dog in the fight can make a complaint against you, and you get to pay lawyers to fight for your livelihood. It’s Finally Over!
Global- British Columbia lifts COVID-19 vaccine mandate for health-care workers
B.C. provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has ended the COVID-19 public health emergency in British Columbia and ended the COVID-19 vaccine mandate in health-care settings.
However, the province is making it mandatory for health-care workers to disclose their immunization status, including COVID-19, influenza and measles vaccines.
Collecting these records will allow health-care administrators to make staffing decisions in the event of an exposure, outbreak, or future pandemic.
Cycling To The Races
Who knew that an inequitable distribution of bicycle infrastructure was indicative of racism? It’s anyone’s guess as to what an equitable distribution might be or how one could even determine that. If you have an opportunity to build bridges, why not just burn them instead by making prospective allies feel like chumps?
But until white allies in the biking community recognize diversity in cycling and see it as more than just a sport but a way of life, Williams says, those disparities will persist.
But the biggest and most important thing an ally can do is shut up, listen, and amplify the voices of Black and brown folks, who are often silenced, Williams says.
By 1 p.m., the predominantly Black and brown mechanics she’d hired had already tuned up more than 50 [bikes].
One supposes that any white mechanics were instructed to fix the damned bikes in silence.

Now that Manitoba’s Conservatives have lost a by-election for a supposedly safe seat that they held for forty years, some in-depth self-reflection might be in order. If they were serious about reconnecting with disaffected voters, much of that reflection ought to dwell on their ham-fisted pandemic policies. I’m not holding my breath.
The affluent Tuxedo riding — a Tory stronghold for its entire four decades of existence — flipped to the NDP for the first time ever in Tuesday’s byelection.
