“What to do about Iran?”

Amir Taheri;

Western powers interested in Iran failed in their diagnosis of the “Iran problem” for two reasons.

The first was that they focused almost exclusively on certain aspects of the Islamic Republic’s disruptive foreign policy. They did not realize that a regime’s foreign policy is a reflection, even a continuation, of its domestic policies, and that a regime that has problems with its own people is unlikely to have problem-free foreign relations.

More importantly, they overlooked the schizophrenia that has afflicted Iran under the Islamic Republic.

Organic Is The Latin Word For “Grown In Pig Shit”

Missouri farmer charged in organic fraud. But I repeat myself.

A Missouri farmer and businessman ripped off consumers nationwide by falsely marketing more than $140 million worth of corn, soybeans and wheat as certified organic grains, federal prosecutors said Wednesday.

The long-running fraud scheme outlined in court documents by prosecutors in Iowa is one of the largest uncovered in the fast-growing organic farming industry. The victims included food companies and their customers who paid higher prices because they thought they were buying grains that had been grown using environmentally sustainable practices.

They can pay higher prices or they can pay lower prices, but they’re not paying for “environmentally sustainable practices”.

Stasi Canada

We have been on Statscan’s call list for about 35 years, although their records only indicate 10. It started at our previous farm with June and December calls demanding livestock inventories, itemized by specific categories. It was never a “convenient” time in all those years.

On June 28, 1994 we moved the entire farm two miles down the road. On June 30 Statscan was looking for livestock figures despite the septic system backing up, soaking boxes and leaving the tap water suspiciously brown and smelly. My temper boiled over and, for once, they left us alone. Come December, they were back at it.

They Sometimes Get Their [GENDER REDACTED]

What could possibly go wrong?

“The RCMP are taking a radical look at their recruitment strategy and could ditch credit checks and the ban on recruits with criminal backgrounds to help them rebuild their depleted ranks.

The Mounties have been plagued by staffing challenges in recent years and are looking at how to convince more women and visible minorities to don the red serge.

An internal document, obtained through access to information, suggests credit checks, the criminal background ban, the two-hour aptitude test and long stints at the training depot could all be eliminated from the hiring process as senior ranks try to make a career as a Mountie more attractive.

The document notes that some of the mandatory requirements can create barriers for communities the force wants to attract, including “groups more likely to have contact with the criminal justice system.”

I Want A New Country

If you’re still wondering…

… why oil-rich Alberta doesn’t have a massive sovereign wealth fund like Norway, consider this.

Alberta is a province, not a country. Ergo, we don’t get to keep all the wealth we generate in this province. Not even close.

I realize this runs counter to the preferred narrative in Canada, where politicians and media types insist Alberta either “put all its eggs in one basket” by failing to diversify its economy (hello Christy Clark), or that Albertans “spent like drunken sailors” during boom times.

Sure, there’s some truth to those arguments. But the far bigger reason why Alberta isn’t rolling in filthy lucre is that we are part of a federation called Canada.
