Dalhousie University restricts search for new VP to ‘racially visible’ and Indigenous candidates -> Dalhousie University Commits Not to Hire Most Competent Candidate for New VP

Dalhousie University says its search for a new senior administrator will be restricted to “racially visible” and Indigenous candidates, part of its efforts to increase underrepresented groups on the Halifax campus.
In a memo to the university community, provost and vice-president academic Carolyn Watters said the prerequisite is in line with the principles of Dalhousie’s employment equity policy.
“We have embarked on the process of selecting a new vice-provost student affairs,” she stated in the memo last month, adding that the search “will be restricted to racially visible persons and Aboriginal Peoples at this time.”

This isn’t the first time this has happened in Canada. One needs to look no further than what the University of Victoria did, with justification provided here.

  1. Our universities are fast becoming Komsomol like breeding grounds for our youth.
I know, I know, here is Kulak again spouting his anticommunist rhetoric.
“…educate the youth in the spirit of communism, engage them in the practical work of building a new society, and prepare a new generation of broadly developed people who will live, work, and direct public affairs in a communist society…”

  2. New Dalhousie Motto: We’re racists but it’s OK
Pretty soon one will just be able to print off a university diploma and it will be worth MORE than one acquired from actual attendance at the university.

  3. A preference for indigenous candidates?
Somebody should tell Elizabeth Warren about this opportunity.

  4. Shiny Pony tried affirmative action with his cabinet and look what it got us. Climate Barbie for one. And two, a woman in charge of NAFTA negotiations who is so out of her depth it is frankly embarassing.

  5. So not only are they eliminating 3/4s of the population (or more) from applying for the job, they’re also eliminating candidates based on skin colour/ethnicity.
    Diversity quotas are institutionalized racism.

  6. No, it says, “racially visible”, so Warren, Dolezal, and Talcum X are out of the running, but what about the Irish ?

  7. Racially discriminating hiring practices becoming the norm in the modern university. It’s par for the “course” considering what is taught in the humanities.

  8. I had to depress you dear readers further, but this nonsense is now slowly invading the sciences and engineering. I always thought they would be immune but I was wrong.

  9. Two people I was in grad school with are engineering profs at Dalhousie.
One of them I knew many years ago before all this PC nonsense started. I don’t know when he got his position but it must have been shortly after we parted company because he’s white.
At the time that the other one was hired, the federal government encouraged the hiring of women and visible minorities and, since she was both, getting her job must have been a piece of cake. In her case, though, it wouldn’t have been necessary as she was quite talented and could have easily been hired on that basis.

  10. this nonsense is now slowly invading the sciences and engineering
I noticed that happening in my profession soon after the Mark Lepine/Gamil Gharbi incident nearly 30 years ago. University engineering departments bent over backwards to be more “accomodating” to women. The governing engineering associations in a number of provinces did the same thing.

  11. There is an easy fix to this. Just self identify as some minority. They cannot dismiss you as a candidate as that goes against their very belief system.

  12. Who will they hire, a woman who is half indigenous half white and who eats pemmican
Or a transgender man who is half black half white and eats rice
Or a half Japanese half Norwegian lesbian vegan who eats out a lot

  13. Boo Rae did the same sort of thing when he was NDP premier of Ontario. We all know how well that worked out.

  14. Who will they hire, a woman who is half indigenous half white and who eats pemmican
Or a transgender man who is half black half white and eats rice
Or a half Japanese half Norwegian lesbian vegan who eats out a lot

  15. .
“We also recognize that in order to achieve equality it is sometimes necessary to treat people differently. Within the Faculty of Social Sciences, our commitment to diversity is deeply rooted in our understanding of discrimination-free hiring and what our students need in order to excel in a globally-connected world.”
    – So, achieving equality means treating people differently? Are you serious?
    – Discrimination-free hiring means ‘white people need not apply’? Are you serious?
This is insanity and it can only work in the fields of social sciences because everyone knows that social science is a bunch of unadulterated horse-shit.
White Christian culture is being irradiated and we are standing there with a finger in our nose wondering what’s coming up next.
Note: equality is an ideal, a fantasy, it’s not real and it cannot be real and only a fool thinks it can.
Merit is the only way forward.

  16. The best schools search high and wide for the best talent worldwide. That’s why a bunch of my university math teachers were Russians.
Searching for under-represented groups is the exact opposite, it is intentionally overlooking the best talent. If the best mathematicians in the world are all Russians, so be it, fill the whole dang department with them if you can.
For me, decisions like these are a sign that Dalhousie is not committed to excellence, it is committed to mediocrity.

  17. And that’s the thing…when hired under those policies, one will be continually subjected to the doubt about one’s competence and qualifications, whether or not it’s warranted. That doubt eventually percolates to the entire institution. Tokenism doesn’t really help anyone.

  18. I hope they get their wish. and I hope the successful candidate is a closet fraudster who engages in a huge helping of nepotism and is caught only after they have emptied out the cookie jar, leaving the mandarins running for cover and pointing fingers.
‘law of unintended consequences’ except THIS one looks intentional.
Im gonna put a fake job ad in the newspaper declaring blacks and asians are NOT welcome to apply and then trot out this story to back it up.
or something. dumb it down, dumb it down.

  19. It’s even WORSE than your tongue in cheek comment suggests …
” … the selection for this position will be limited to members of visible minorities and Indigenous persons. Candidates must self- identify to be considered.
That’s it. All the candidate need do (to PROVE their indigenous heritage) … is to “self-identify”. Voila! Enter Elizabeth Warren’s of the minority victimhood persuasion.

  20. Unfortunately, a lot of academic administrators are graduates of the Seagull School of Management. At the place where I used to teach, one of the vice-presidents retired and was soon replaced by an SSM alumna. She didn’t do a whole lot, had a sloppy attitude, and went elsewhere when her contract was finished. I’m sure she left a mess that had to be cleaned up.
As for fraudsters, the institution hired someone as a wellness co-ordinator (red flag right there). She didn’t do a whole lot. She photocopied articles from a variety of magazines and passed them off as her own work. She went around to all the on-campus vending machines and put stickers on what she considered worth consuming.
Others than that, she sat around drinking coffee for the rest of the time.
I thought she was a crap artist and I didn’t pay much attention to her. As it turned out, six months after she started, she went on stress leave. (Stress…. yeah, right.) She bilked the institution for two years until someone in charge finally caught on that something didn’t add up and she was finally given the boot.
Nobody was hired to fill the position. I wonder why?

  21. “We also recognize that in order to achieve equality OF OUTCOME it is ALWAYS necessary to treat people differently.”
    There, fixed it for them.
Equality of opportunity is so passe.

  22. A female friend of mine is a geology professor and a pretty smart chick. But she was never taken seriously by her colleagues and after several years trying to climb the ladder had to leave for a different university where she now thrives in a very senior role. While she has too much character to retaliate (she now hires), I can only imagine when women get into positions of power after having been treated so poorly, how they would see it as their turn. Hiring under-represented people to surround you is a great way of consolidating power. It has worked well for men (in the opposite way by hiring only like males and not the best but keeping under represented people out). During my under-graduate degree in science I never had a female professor. Were men keeping women out, or were there no women to hire? Probably a little of both.
A much bigger problem, however, is the creation of departments such as women’s studies, indigenous studies, black studies etc where there is no hope of graduating to employment in your field of study. An ever growing number of students are graduating with worthless degrees and hopelessly in debt.

  23. Is it really enough to just self-identify? I doubt many of the newly created “Eastern Metis”, who are what 1/32 native (or is it less?), would look sufficiently racially visible to get the position. I guess they will have to stick to collecting pogey, like the rest of the Maritimes.

  24. I’m “racially visible”. Especially by the end of winter, I’m white as a sheet.
It’s interesting that plus ca change . . . Presumably, as per one of Pete Seeger’s favourite songs, No Irish Need Apply.

  25. So what?
    Self identify as minority?
    Easy peasy.
    We are all Metis now.
Thank you Supreme Court of Canada.
Funny thing how systemic the racism of our progresssive comrades is.
    They worship institutional racism.
From the soft version of “these poor minorities are so disadvantaged, that they would amount to nothing without our handouts.
To the blatant Eugenics of the Canadian Apartheid System .
Strange how 100 years of liberal “help” has damn near destroyed the native indians.
And that native women are still nonpersons in Canadian Law.
Being called any kind of “Ist”, Ism or cist by these parasites is a badge of honour.

  26. Employment
7 It is a discriminatory practice, directly or indirectly,
    (a) to refuse to employ or continue to employ any individual, or
    (b) in the course of employment, to differentiate adversely in relation to an employee,
on a prohibited ground of discrimination.
    Prohibited grounds of discrimination
3 (1) For all purposes of this Act, the prohibited grounds of discrimination are race, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, family status, genetic characteristics, disability and conviction for an offence for which a pardon has been granted or in respect of which a record suspension has been ordered.

  27. Seriously, what white, conservative male would ever consider working at a Western university? Why on earth would you want to do that to yourself? Arm yourself, gather in groups who are tech-gurus, and starve these governments of the proceeds of your labour.
It is past time that white conservative males begun total economic warfare on their governments. Given that we tend to be high IQ, hard working and resourceful (whether in trades, tech or the military) it shouldn’t be too difficult to engineer crippling tax avoidance, and mass non-cooperation…

  28. We need a Man Party!
Elect me Pres and the first thing I’m doing is pulling some Man Cards!
    Starting with PM Space Boy.
Boy o boy, can you imagine the exploding heads? Gooood times!
