Rachel Maddow and Spike Lee celebrate the Hoover Dam in a video…
“This is a project of national significance. We’ve got those projects on the menu right now. And we’ve got to figure out whether or not we are still a country that can think this big.”
… that manages to avoid the spectacular new Hoover Dam bypass mere yards behind the cameraman.
But that was a Bush era project of “national significance.”
Much more at Ed Driscoll, (though the best part’s in the comments.)

The late Charlie Rich is perhaps most famous for a couple of MOR hits (“Behind Closed Doors” and “The Most Beautiful Girl”) he recorded late in his career during the 1970’s, but these schmaltzy ballads belied the talent and versatility of a man who, in the early days of his career as a singer, songwriter, and session pianist for a subsidiary of Sam Phillips’s Sun Records, was equally adept at rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, soul, and rhythm and blues. From the 1960 album “Lonely Weekends”, here’s Who Will The Next Fool Be.

Danielle Smith’s Speech to Quebec Conservatives
I received the following e-mail from an uncle of mine well connected in the Conservative Party of Canada. The linked speech is well worth a read:
Ms. Danielle Smith’s address about the Alberta story to Quebec conservatives should be necessary reading for all members of the Canadian Parliament and the U.S. Congress; especially those who fail to understand the importance of the Oil Sands.
An important note: After the oil and gas stocks are depleted, Alberta. BC and Saskatchewan are sitting on top of a 1000 year supply of coal.
Danielle Smith may very well be Alberta’s premier after the next general election. Her speech to the Quebec conservatives is one of the best written, representing the positive history about the Alberta story; not the “misinformation and smear” the Liberals have used over the years. Alberta is fortunate to have a person like Danielle as Leader for the Wild Rose Party.
Premier Ralph Klein would often remark — “the only thing I fear is a Conservative party passing me on the RIGHT ! !”. Danielle Smith and her Wild Rose Alliance is that party. Ralph was a bleeding heart Liberal before he joined the Alberta PC party.
Here’s the speech!
The Hawking Particle
It’s one of the great unanswered questions in science. What is it about this particular physics geek that prompts mainstream journalists to publish his every insipid pronouncement? Other than the fancy speech box, that is.

Y2Kyoto: The Great Gravel Road Death Count
It’s the reason no one in Saskatchewan lives past the age of 32;
According to Environment Canada, dust from unpaved roads in Ontario puts a whopping 90,116 tonnes of PM2.5 into our air each year, nearly 130 times the amount from coal-fired power generation. Using the Clean Air Alliance method for computing deaths, particulates from country-road usage kills 40,739 people per year, quite the massacre considering there are only about 90,000 deaths from all causes in Ontario each year. Who knew? That quiet drive up back country roads to the cottage for a weekend of barbecues, cozy fires and marshmallow roasts is a form of genocide.
Luckily for green advocacy groups, one of the chief job requirements of mainstream journalism is innumeracy. (h/t TimR)

Mastergate: A Postscript
And really – who can blame her?
Public records show that’s just what Jack Layton and Olivia Chow did last summer. The New Democrat power couple stayed at a Disney World resort, where Mickey and Minnie Mouse mingle with guests, courtesy of a big labour union. […]
The union shelled out $1,158 apiece for Layton and Chow’s Air Canada tickets. The NDP chief’s one-night stay at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin resort cost $290. The union paid another $145 to put up Chow for the night in a separate hotel room.

[Huron University College] offers post-baccalaureate and professional degree programs in theology. The College recently accepted a $2-million endowment for a new Chair in Islamic Studies within the College’s historically Anglican Faculty of Theology. About half the money is to come via fundraising facilitated by the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC), and the other, matching half from the Virginia-based International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT). A cofounder of the latter group was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator in the 2007-2008 trial of Sami al-Arian, an Islamist academic linked to jihadism.

Slave Lake On Fire
Disaster for the town of Slave Lake, Alberta. Video.
Wind gusts that accelerated the advance of fires and grounded water bombers Sunday afternoon allowed the fire to jump two highways. Afterwards, it was free to tear through the Alberta town of 7,000 people. A long list of hundreds of buildings have burned down – including city hall, the police station, the radio station and countless houses.
[…]
Meanwhile, flames blocked all but one road, trapping many residents in the town and leaving officials to urge people to simply flee to wide open parking lots or beaches, and hope the fire doesn’t reach them. Traffic along the one highway was slow, as residents navigated through thick smoke amid waning daylight Sunday evening.

Main street – Town Hall.
This Reddit thread has more info – as if 9pm local time: Friend on Facebook just posted that the Brick, the library are GONE and the Ford dealer is on fire. Shocking! Edit: also the school and the Sawridge Hotel! Edit: 9:30 pm Also the hospital, the courthouse, the police station, 92.7 radio are now gone. Highway 2 east is open for now.
There seems to be little by way of media coverage yet, so Twitter seems to be the go to place, if you can keep up.

Slave lake fire continues to burn out of control. Entire town of 7000 expected to be gone by morning.
