In 2019, the LA Department of Water and Power (LADWP) began replacing nearly 100-year-old power line poles cutting through Topanga State Park, when the project was halted within days by conservationists outraged that federally endangered Braunton’s milkvetch plants had been trampled during the process. Instead of fire-hardening the park, the city — which the state said had undertaken the work without proper permitting — ended up paying $2 million in fines and was ordered by the California Coastal Commission to reverse the whole project and replant the rare herb.
That work saved about 200 Braunton’s milkvetch plants — almost all of which have now likely been torched in the wildfires that consumed Topanga Canyon, along with nearly 24,000 acres (37 square miles) of some of LA’s most sought-after real estate.

Do you recall the California high-speed rail project that is $80 Billion over budget and projected to be at least $128 Billion over budget before it’s ever completed? Well, the project continues to limp along due to an injection of a few more billion dollars but there are questions if it will ever get completed.
One wonders what good use all of this wasted money could have been put to. On a recent podcast, Adam Carolla and Drew Pinsky discussed how anytime there’s a wind in Malibu or Pacific Palisades, a fire breaks out due to suspended power lines falling to the ground. If these lines were buried, this would not happen. Carolla is interviewed about the same here.

California’s attorney general is suing ExxonMobil, alleging the oil giant engaged in a “decades-long campaign of deception” about the effectiveness of plastics recycling.
The 147-page suit alleges that nearly all of plastic waste processed by the company has been turned into fuel instead of recycled plastic.
