How do you say “push back” in French?

QMI Agency has learned the Parti Quebecois government plans to amend the Quebec charter of rights and freedoms and ban most religious signs and symbols from public institutions such as daycare centres, public schools, hospitals, clinics, and other government buildings.
Visible crosses, yarmulkes, hijabs, niqabs, burkas and turbans would all be banned.
According to sources close to the government, all health workers, public school teachers and public daycare workers would have to leave their religious symbols at home when they go to work.

Thought you’d find this 2 page real estate brochure interesting. It was delivered to our door today in the Point Grey neighbourhood of
Vancouver. […]
Went for a 12 block walk the other day. Conservatively, at leasty 15-20 new houses at different stages of completion. All Chinese realtors and ALL the construction people I saw were Chinese.

Sustainable…Steak?

That first “s” word is now effectively, for right- (in that other sense of the word) thinking people a meme to identify elliptically all those things they support and those they condemn. From sustainable development to sustainable transportation. And we already have sustainable food, more from a usual suspect.
Having just eaten a superb, barbied on charcoal, one-pound and thick rib steak (gnawed to the bone as best one could) one is both glad and sad to be of a certain age.
By the way the perfect and only side: watercress. Does that green one? A bit?

Who saw this coming?

A poll conducted by the research bureau of Maurice de Hond (the Dutch equivalent of Gallup), commissioned by the PVV, among a representative sample of over 1,900 people also shows other striking results:
A majority of 55 percent favors stopping immigration from Islamic countries.
63 percent say: no new mosques.
72 percent favor a constitutional ban on Sharia law in the Netherlands.
64 percent say that the arrival of immigrants from Islamic countries has not been beneficial to the Netherlands.
Nearly three-quarters – 73 percent – of all Dutch see a relationship between Islam and the recent terror acts in Boston, London and Paris.

Sweden riots spread beyond Stockholm“The whole policy of immigration and integration is being questioned”
Nice of them to finally notice. More here.
And here…

The media in Sweden sometimes report on studies in which researchers submit several job applications, some with names that sound Swedish, and some with more foreign-sounding names. Applicants with “Swedish” names are more likely to get called to an interview, something journalists interpret as meaning that immigrants in Sweden have little chance of finding employment.
Young immigrants, particularly those living in economic and social exclusion, get the impression that they might as well give up the idea of succeeding in the Swedish labour market. Journalists communicate this message with the hope that it will sound alarm bells that lead to efforts to reduce discrimination and racism. But it would be much more constructive if the journalists themselves better understood how discrimination works, and instead put forward a more nuanced perspective.

Heh. “They’re not riots, they’re diversity bonfires.”

Daily Mail;

Sweden is reeling after a third night of rioting in largely run-down immigrant areas of the capital Stockholm.
In the last 48 hours violence has spread to at least ten suburbs with mobs of youths torching hundreds of cars and clashing with police.
It is Sweden’s worst disorder in years and has shocked the country and provoked a debate on how Sweden is coping with youth unemployment and an influx of immigrants.

A letter of support from Ontario’s labour minister appears in the latest edition of a book on Islam which condones men physically punishing their wives.
The letter from Liberal Yasir Naqvi appears in the reviews section of Islam: Balancing Life and Beyond.
The book says it is within the tenants of Islam to “lightly” strike your spouse if she exhibits “serious moral misconduct.”
Naqvi congratulates author Suhail Kapoor on the release of the new edition.
“I admire your drive to reach out to the public and promote values of tolerance, understanding and respect,” Naqvi said in the letter.

What would Muhammad do?

A muslim who raped a 13-year-old girl he groomed on Facebook has been spared a prison sentence after a judge heard he went to an Islamic faith school where he was taught that women are worthless.
Adil Rashid, 18, claimed he was not aware that it was illegal for him to have sex with the girl because his education left him ignorant of British law.
Yesterday Judge Michael Stokes handed Rashid a suspended sentence, saying: ‘Although chronologically 18, it is quite clear from the reports that you are very naive and immature when it comes to sexual matters.’

The national census for England and Wales is out…

By any measure, what it reveals is a country undergoing seismic change. Over the course of a decade up to four million more people have entered the country to live. In the capital, London, people identifying themselves as “white British” have for the first time become a minority. Perhaps most strikingly, the national Muslim population has doubled.
