…. after rejecting a draft constitution for Europe four years ago, delivered a solid bloc for anti-immigration politician Geert Wilders to take to Europe’s parliament, exit polls showed Thursday.
Underscoring skepticism over further European integration, Wilders’ right-wing Freedom Party appeared set to win four out of 25 contested seats in elections for the European Parliament being held over the next four days.

No politician exemplifies establishment fears more than Mr. Wilders, a charismatic orator whose platinum-blond hair has been compared to Mozart’s wig. He is a polarizing figure in European politics who has been banned from entering the U.K. under hate-speech laws. He travels with bodyguards and keeps where he sleeps a secret.
Mr. Wilders, 45 years old, has sat in the Dutch Parliament since 1998. In 2004, he left the conservative People’s Party over a dispute about whether Turkey should be allowed to join the EU. (It isn’t a member but has applied to join.) He founded the Party for Freedom and discovered a knack for tapping into Dutch xenophobia.
The Netherlands has 800,000 Muslims, mostly Turks and Moroccans, in a population of 17 million. Mr. Wilders has progressively ramped up his anti-Islamic rhetoric, calling the Koran a “fascist book” and making a movie depicting Islam as inherently violent. The British government cited the movie, “Fitna,” as grounds to ban Mr. Wilders from visiting the U.K. earlier this year.
Mr. Wilders added a strong anti-EU plank to his platform during a 2005 Dutch referendum on a new EU constitution. He helped defeat the measure, effectively scuttling the project.
His party, known by its Dutch acronym, the PVV, won nine of 150 seats in parliament in the 2006 national elections. Polls now show that roughly one-fifth of Dutch voters support Mr. Wilders, making the PVV the most popular political group in the country and its leader a long-shot candidate for prime minister. The next general election, however, isn’t until 2011.

Ottawa’s Police Services Board voted unanimously Monday to ask the federal government to foot the $900,000 bill for what Chief Vern White called an “unprecedented” two-week demonstration by Tamil protesters on Wellington Street, which culminated in 30,000 people descending on Parliament Hill last Tuesday.
“It’s despicable to ask the citizens of Ottawa to pay for these costs,” said River Councillor Maria McRae, who moved the motion, which asks the board’s chairman, West Carleton-March Councillor Eli El-Chantiry, and White to write a letter to the federal government asking them to pay the entire bill.

It seems the Tamils have decided to, in my boss’ words, “take Toronto hostage”. Following news coverage for the last three hours, she says they have closed down the Gardiner Expressway, the Don Valley Parkway, University Avenue (where they have been protesting for nearly two weeks) and Spadina Avenue. Her husband has been trying to get out of the downtown core to his home in Oakville and is finding it incredibly difficult to get anywhere.

CP24 is reporting that protesters are set to clear the Gardiner Expressway after hearing from Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff’s office. Police are currently in the process of opening the Dundas and University corridor as well. According to one protest spokesman, Mr. Ignatieff’s office has promised to bring up the issue of economic and diplomatic sanctions against Sri Lanka with the government in Ottawa. “It was a spontaneous event,” the Tamil spokesman said in an interview with CP24.

Truthfully, I just don’t know why McGuinty doesn’t simply redeploy the OPP from Caledonia, to prevent any interference should Tamils decide next to dig up asphalt to erect permanent barricades, claim ownership of a few downtown buildings, and play toss-the-minivan off that overpass.

British soldiers are engaged in “a surreal mini civil war” with growing numbers of homegrown jihadists who have travelled to Afghanistan to support the Taliban, senior army officers have told The Independent.
Interceptions of Taliban communications have shown that British jihadists – some “speaking with West Midlands accents” – are active in Helmand and other parts of southern Afghanistan, according to briefing papers prepared by an official security agency.
Estimate: MI5 has estimated that up to 4,000 British Muslims had travelled to Pakistan and, before the fall of the Taliban, to Afghanistan for military training. The main concern until now has been about the parts some of them had played in terrorist plots in the UK. Now there are signs that they are mounting missions against British and Western targets abroad. “We are now involved in a kind of surreal mini-British civil war a few thousand miles away,” said an army officer.
Somalia is also becoming a destination for British Muslims of Somali extraction who have started fighting alongside Al Qaeda-backed forces.

The Pakistani Press is jubliant, and Lord Ahmed is praising Allah for delivering ‘a victory for the Muslim community’.
It is a sorry state of affairs indeed that a parliament whose liberties have been forged through centuries of religious intolerance should succumb to the threats of one intolerant Muslim. Lord Ahmed is manifesting a notion of Divine Right, and one suspects it is precisely the sort of defence of Islam that Prince Charles shall make when he is sworn ‘Defender of Faith’. The blasphemy laws are being re-forged to protect one god, one faith and one prophet; they no longer defend YHWH, Christianity, Jesus Christ or the Church of England. Lord Ahmed is not functioning as a Labour peer; he is the self-appointed khalifa of all things Islamic. He is not concerned to protect freedom of expression or freedom of speech, but to stifle debate and ensure that Parliament submits to the Dar Al-Islam.
It is for moments such as these that one might hope the Lords Spiritual might enter the fray and defend the right of the noble baroness to extend an invitation to a democratically-elected Dutch MP. Their silence is deafening. They no longer believe anything strongly for fear of causing offence; they no longer defend anything for fear of being abolished.

According to Buksh, the whispers and sideways glances at his boys not being Sunni turned to open hostility during the early stages of their second game of the tournament.
Both sons were attacked by the opposing players. One son took a stick to the head while another one took a stick to the mouth that broke one of his teeth.
“Before you know it, it was just a massive riot,” said Buksh. “I went in there as a father and tried to help.”
In addition to the opposing players attacking his sons, Buksh said spectators, some as old as 40, were also involved in the attack that left his boys bruised and battered.
