But, according to Julie Turkewitz of the New York Times, some families who have immigrated here from countries that still practice circumcision are intent on bringing their American-born teenage girls in line with customs back home. They are accomplishing this by sending their daughters on vacations that are about helping “them connect with their families and traditions,” which just happen to include undergoing female circumcision, sometimes forced.

Yesterday I was traveling on B.C. Ferries with wife and daughter (grown) when I saw a woman in full niqab. I spoke with her and was surprised that her English was nearly unaccented. I’m sorry now that I didn’t wait until her husband returned to engage them both in conversation, but I acted ‘in the moment’, expressing to her that her garb was considered a symbol of female oppression and antithetical to Canadian values.
My wife and daughter were appalled that I spoke with her, saying that I was yet another male in her life demonstrating oppression of women. And in a sense they were right and I should have taken it up with her husband. Yet my daughter, as with anything political, has no interest nor understanding of the bigger picture and sadly, does not really want to educate herself.
I believe I am defending my wife, our two daughters and our country while Wahhabi/Salafist Islamists are working to create a beach-head in not only larger cities, but smaller towns.
They think I’m nuts.
Your wife and daughter feel you should have asked the niqab donned woman’s owner, if you could enquire of her oppressed nature, and they feel you are oppressing her, by not clearing this with her owner first.
