Internal polls are ringing alarm bells for Democrats and the memos have gone out.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s dismissal of senior officials is casting an inconvenient light on an issue that the Biden administration has largely ignored since the outbreak of war with Russia: Ukraine’s history of rampant corruption and shaky governance.
As it presses ahead with providing tens of billions of dollars in military, economic and direct financial support aid to Ukraine and encourages its allies to do the same, the Biden administration is now once again grappling with longstanding worries about Ukraine’s suitability as a recipient of massive infusions of American aid.
Wait for it…
Those issues, which date back decades and were not an insignificant part of former President Donald Trump’s first impeachment…
Enthusiasm for Ukraine among Democrats and their allied media had little to do with democracy and freedom for Ukraine. In the background, the political calculus was always about Trump.
They’d put years of hard work into creating a political narrative tying Trump to Russia, and they weren’t going to let that crisis go to waste. They saw Ukraine as a conveniently distant battlefield upon which to seal the political fate of the evil dictator, Donald J. Putin.
What they didn’t predict was that the conflict would drag on beyond the patience of the American mid-term voter already angry at skyrocketing inflation and a looming recession. Now they need an exit ramp and their friends in media are setting it up.
From the comments – I remember South Vietnam. The Democrats reversed course after LBJ dragged us into that war. Suddenly when Nixon actually negotiated a peace treaty and US Withdrawal, all the stories from 1972 on were how Sough Vietnam was a corrupt sh**hole and we should stop all military aid and abandon them. We did, and South Vietnam fell in 1975.
