With approximately 2,000 buildings and 200 production plants, BASF’s Ludwigshafen site is home to roughly a third of the company’s total global production. All told, nearly 20 billion pounds of stuff is made there every year, and that stuff serves as the starting material for countless global supply chains.
Last week, the Wall Street Journal published an important story about how sanctions on Russia – however justified the motivation to impose them might be – are beginning to backfire in ways Western leaders seem to have been unable to calculate in advance…

Modern technology has come to work so well that most people do not even need to think about how it works. It may as well just be magic. They turn on a light switch and the light turns on. How did the electricity get produced? They don’t know. Where did the light bulb get produced and with what materials? They don’t know. They just went to the store and there it was on the shelf.
Same story with how food gets to the grocery, how gasoline gets to the gas station, etc. It just works. It’s always worked. May as well be magic. So these very same ignorant people have no reason to connect anything happening anywhere else in the world to how their stuff works. And that now includes most of the governing classes in western society.
Hence why everything is deteriorating. Maliciously ignorant leaders who don’t know how things work, don’t want to know, are convinced they know better anyhow, and are therefore breaking everything they touch.

The advanced technologies that our civilization (upon which our very lives depend) needs to keep functioning is complex, powerful, expensive, requires constant maintenance and, above all, FRAGILE.
It’s no surprise that a plurality of voters seem to believe that all the stuff we need is produced by some sort of juju. Many Canadians already believe in astrology, self-annointed messiahs and the wisdom of celebrities to guide their lives, so why not?
And once society has put its trust in juju rather than engineering for all the stuff it needs, problem-solving becomes trivial:
Food is created by supermarket juju, electricity generated by behind-the-wall juju, and vehicles driven by motor juju, etc.
Juju-based theories of operation require zero math skills and different types of juju can simply be swapped-in as needed – green energy juju for evil dirty oil, socialist economic juju for capitalist juju, etc. etc.
And, best of all, European math, science, and engineering juju (which was invented to enable the enslavement of non-whites) can be plug-in replaced by kinder gentler greener more inclusive jujus.
When examined with an alternate-lens juju-based theory is irresistibly compelling, and any idiot can understand it.

I wasn’t aware of the Navy’s need for vacuum tubes but I saw what happened when the market for valves dried up in the 1970’s. The great American manufacturers,RCA, Sylvania, etc closed their factories and sold the production equipment to Russia. I could tell by the stampings on the metal inside. The label on the glass might say Russia but the tooling was pure Sylvania.
In fairness to Sylvania and the others, there was no longer a market here. The Navy should have thought ahead.
Probably because there is a giant misunderstanding of “Comparative Advantage” in the credentialed class?
BASF (formerly IG Farben of some fame during the great unpleasantness from 1933 through 1945) is the largest chemical company in the world and has a rather large footprint in Canada and the USA as well – things that affect the main Vaterland facility will most definitely affect BASF plants operated by the cheap labor puppen outside of Deutschland. I am former BASF US puppen and will follow this with some interest. Fighting Island, a piece of Canada located in the Detroit River, is owned by BASF and operated as a high-end retreat for executives of the company and used to wine and dine potential customers for their products – one wonders if it may come up for sale.
Why do I think the BASF executives will compound the problems of shutting down Ludwigshafen by furloughing most of the electricians, mechanics, pipefitters, welders, technicians, operators, and engineers?
Then they will be absolutely surprised that no one is around to work the plant when the gas supply is restored either by new sources or Russia?
In a similar vein, do we all remember how many meat packing plants there are supplying 90% of the meat in Canada.
Three. (3) I found that out in 2020 when they closed those plants due to WuFlu.
Does that seem safe? Three packing plants for 30 million people?
Sanctions are only a “problem”, when you allow your industry and economy to become dependant on Dictators.
