So serious was the European engineer’s warning, Hydro shut Jenpeg down almost immediately about two weeks ago. Last week, Hydro’s engineers inspected the first turbine and found many cracks, about half a centimetre deep, on the shaft near the propellers — a part of the turbine that’s hard to get at and not normally inspected. Engineers are usually more concerned with the end of the shaft that’s closer to the power-making equipment, said Schneider.

I once had my car pulled over and searched 8 times in three hours by the RCMP.
We had a name for that, back when I was in high school. It was called “Saturday night”. The Carlyle RCMP detachment had 21 officers – for a town of 1200. They had to keep busy doing something when they weren’t up at White Bear or scraping bodies from Hwy 13. We got over it. In fact, I hate to break it to you, but policing in 2010 is far less arbitrary than it was in our parents’ day.
Still, could someone please tell me how police are supposed to track down young men matching the description of black bloc anarchists without actually stopping and searching people who fit the description?

A federal judge in New Orleans has blocked a six-month moratorium on new deepwater drilling projects that was imposed in response to the massive Gulf oil spill.
Several companies that ferry people and supplies and provide other services to offshore drilling rigs had asked U.S. District Judge Martin Feldman in New Orleans to overturn the moratorium.
President Barack Obama’s administration has halted the approval of any new permits for deepwater drilling and suspended drilling at 33 exploratory wells in the Gulf.
Feldman says in his ruling that the Interior Department failed to provide adequate reasoning for the moratorium. He says it seems to assume that because one rig failed, all companies and rigs doing deepwater drilling pose an imminent danger.

One idiot senior liberal blogger actually bragged about watching a whole ten minutes of Fox which justified his having an opinion. And they call us dumb?
For decades the right has been throwing the same things at the CBC, but now it’s different.

Here’s a thought, Larry, a Bill to force a province wide decertification of the Teamsters. I’m sure CLAC would be prepared to pick up the pieces of that unions ruined reputation and they won’t break the law.
Failing that, maybe the gov’t will enforce Section 15 of the Trade Union Act.
At the very least, it would be a change of pace to penalize someone other than business owners.

There’s an ugly secret of global poverty, one rarely acknowledged by aid groups or U.N. reports. It’s a blunt truth that is politically incorrect, heartbreaking, frustrating and ubiquitous:
It’s that if the poorest families spent as much money educating their children as they do on wine, cigarettes and prostitutes, their children’s prospects would be transformed. Much suffering is caused not only by low incomes, but also by shortsighted private spending decisions by heads of households.

It’s not an “unacknowledged truth”, either.
The poverty racket is an intentional lie, refined and perpetuated by that certain political class and their enablers in the gated-community community.
It’s why those of us who live modest lifestyles, who rub shoulders with the dysfunctional poor, have so little sympathy for them. They’re not victims of circumstance. They’re creatures of entitlement.
You see – this is what I love about blogging. You don’t need to write for the New York Times to get blunt truths into the newspaper.

I suggest that this time we stand back and let them win.
