Iraq’s Political Miracle;

The critics will escalate their grumbling ahead of Sunday’s vote, and there will be more violence. But Iraq’s newborn democracy is a juggernaut that will not be stopped.

Nothing divides the NDP like the Israel-Palestine conflict. It’s rare to find a New Democrat too busy to talk to the media, but deputy leaders Libby Davies and Thomas Mulcair were strangely unavailable today when asked to talk about the party’s policy on the Middle East.

It is for this reason that a party activist called Matt Godwin has launched a group called Progressive Caucus for Peace to offer a more balanced, moderate voice on the Middle East. Mr. Godwin said he was appalled by the 2006 resolution and the treatment of Jews by many on the left. “The issue has become poisonous, so this network was started to bring together dedicated social democrats … and counter extremist views that paint Israel as an apartheid state,” he said.
The aim is not to change official party policy, which supports a two-state solution and has been worded so as not to cause any offense. Rather the new group is attempting to change the climate in a party where it has become fashionable to don a Palestinian scarves and spew hatred that would be deemed unacceptable in any other context.

Good luck with that, Mr Godwin. It’s not “fashion” – it’s who they are.

Researchers in Texas say they have found a way of cutting the cost of producing gasoline by two thirds, taking advantage of the lowest grade of coal available – one that is abundant beneath the Canadian prairies.
A new refining process being perfected at the University of Texas at Arlington can turn the low-cost lignite coal, also known as brown coal, into oil at a fraction of the cost of importing crude oil from abroad.

The use of the word “denier” to slur skeptics has long been criticized on the basis that it’s an inappropriate borrowing of a term long used to identify those who minimize or refute the Holocaust.
That misses the mark. They’re not borrowing the word at all – they’re using it in the original context.

Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said Tuesday that people who do not take the threat of climate change seriously remind him of those who downplayed the growing threat of fascism and Nazism in the 1930s.
