Pray that Kate is correct. We caught that flu out of Mexico back in 2014 after attending a wedding reception. We put everyone up in a hotel in downtown Denver that was also hosting a Colorado state social worker conference. Imagine that. My husband and I were down, literally, for a month. My Dad collapsed on his drive home and spent ten days in a hospital. Two of my sisters-in-law had to go to emergency. I do NOT want to go through that again. Honestly, the older one gets. Buying property in Florida over the last year and a half, nearly every time I get off the plane, I’ve contracted another flu. Flu shots are a waste, but I keep getting them.

So why have they shut down all the flights?

A couple comments.
First. Previous Coronavirus outbreaks seemed to get not very far in the US. SARS Killed 800 people in 2003. None in the US. MERS had a 30% fatality rate a few years ago. No one in the US died. John Ringo, the SF Author pointed this out. I hope this trend continues!
Second. A contrary fact. This 2019-nCov seems to spread to multiple people easily. Early data says it is much more infectious than the average flu or SARS. Combined with air, train, and automobile travel that means everyone is likely to be exposed to it. One key question is can people infected with ncov spread the virus before they develop symptoms of ncov? If so, it will be difficult or impossible to stop. I have both heard it does and doesn’t spread without any symptoms?
Third, it sounds like the pneumonia version of the illness is the real killer, and it takes the old, diabetics, and the immune compromised. People like me. (Still early, not enough data).

You probably got a cold, and not influenza. There is a big difference – a cold infects the nose and throat and is an annoyance, influenza infects the entire body and can kill you.
Alternatively, If you truly had influenza, you may have gotten a strain not covered by the flu shot, which only covers the most common strains expected for that year.
The final option is that you got the flu shot shortly after you were infected but before you became symptomatic. It takes two weeks for the flu shot to become effective within your body..
Good for you for taking care of your health and the health of others by getting a flu shot!

Bullshit. The worst you can get from the flu shot are very minor flu symptoms. You could have been infected before the immunity kicked in or you could have been infected by a virus not covered in the shot. Only 3 or 4 of the most contagious and/or deadly viruses are included.

Word is there’s a couple of cases in Calgary and those folks were in many public places prior to being tested. I’d say chances are pretty good it will spread in Calgary quickly since these places included a movie theater. The reaction to tonight’s newscasts announcing the WHO global emergency will be interesting to see. I’ve already stocked up and it might be time for everyone here to think about it! If it starts spreading in Canada things will rapidly deteriorate.
BTW to give you an idea of the spread, I fondly remember 7000 confirmed cases yesterday and we’re at 9000 today with another update in a few house putting it over 10k for sure. THREE THOUSAND in one day. It’s probably nothing.
I was in Quebec city airport and saw Chinese people with masks on January 18. Due to flight delays I transited through Pearson Airport the next day. I didn’t know about the virus until I landed in Calgary the evening of Jan 19th and saw ‘the first confirmed cases on the TV News in China at the gate in Calgary. First day after the flight I woke up with a significant nosebleed sore throat headache and cough. The next couple days I was unbelievably tired. Sore throat came back day about day 4 felt like it was going to be a full blown cold and that was gone again. Had trouble sleeping since and haven’t felt particularly well in general since the flight.
It really makes me wonder.

The Chinese are panicking with quarantines and cancellations of everything, events, school, shutdown factories and businesses. China is already hurting from the trade wars and the economic slowdown in Europe. This will really hurt their economy. They are losing two or three weeks out of their first 13 week quarterly production. Maybe even more losses to come?

I am wondering about the full-on propaganda push by all Canadian media outlets to brand any concern over the coronavirus as racist. This video itself is an egregious example of hack journalism, quoting unnamed sources, or sources like “an infections disease expert”, and “a social justice institute” , eg: “a totally smart persons who has totally unbiased views and is totally an expert, trust us”.
Every major news outlet in Canada is lining up on ideological lines to tell the story that the real threat to Canadians is xenophobia directed against Chinese persons returning from Lunar New Year vacations in China. If you search for coronavirus and Canada you will find scores of similar videos, all produced within the past couple of days.
I am concerned about two things:
1) I’m a communications pro, and I know a directed push when I see one. Who is directing, and who is funding this initiative, and why? Is it the federal government of Canada? Is it a cultural entity funded by the Chinese government? The message is very irresponsible from a public health perspective. because it discourages citizens from taking elementary precautions in order to prevent antagonizing one portion of the electorate.
2) Why is Google cooperating in this initiative? They are actively pushing content – pushing videos into suggestion queues, and pushing stories to the top of search results and into the top stories block – that don’t line up at all with organic traffic. Most of the stories will relate to “racism” even if that word isn’t in your search terms.
This is propagandizing, and it makes me very uncomfortable to see an American big tech company willing to play ball with foreign entities in this way. I’m convinced there’s a big story here. I don’t like the idea of foreign companies controlling the flow of information to Canadian citizens at the behest of our government or worse yet- someone else’s.
Reminds me of the Aids situation in San Francisco in the ’80s. The lefty’s in charge wouldn’t shut down the bath houses in order to avoid upsetting gays. When they finally did much, much too late, the gays moved their party to Honolulu bath houses.

There are 2 critical paramters to be aware of with viruses. the Ro and the CFR. The Ro describes its ability to spread. This virus is spreading faster than MERS CoV, Ebola and SARS CoV.
The CFR describes it’s fatality ratio, described to be 2%. This is lower than all the aforementioned viruses. Predictions are it will peak in a week-10 days.
