  1. Dog sleds could make a come back if this keeps up…

  2. I bet they are glad they ordered the replacement to the Mackinaw to be lighter duty, on account of lake ice is a thing of the past only codgers talk about.

  3. Ice Lanes Shipping – sounds like a reality show Discovery hasn’t discovered yet. I’m waiting for the crusty old captain (or Todd Dewey) to inform the watchers “These are the worst conditions I’ve ever seen!”

  4. Ships 1 and 3 in the picture seem to have no containers on deck.
Could they be oil tankers rather than freighters?

  5. I hope they’re not living off of canned food.
    And neat site, CaligulaJones.

  6. I would like to see GREENPEACE idiots get their stupid zodiacs stuck in this ice

  7. But the current POTUS told us that 2014 was the warmest ave global temperature ever recorded; this would include some of the ice forming months. What gives, did Superior not get the memo?

  8. Hello People, David Suzuki here. Global warming is real and the polar ice caps are melting at an alarming rate. The coast lines will all be under water in a few short years so sell your property and head for higher ground. BTW, I will not sell my island off the coast of BC, nor will I sell any of my 3 houses I own for the cause. I will not stop flying around the world to earn a living to lower my carbon footprint. But I do have an idea that people will love, I will lower the lights while filming my TV show, The Nature of Things, so I can do my part in this Global Warmy Thingy. You people have seen my ugly mug for 25 years and I thought you have suffered enough.

  9. I don’t understand…why are they using those expensive icebreakers on the Great Lakes when they could just sail through the ice-free Arctic Ocean?

  10. Ships 1 & 3 are ocean going vessels. The wheel house is in the stern. The centre boat is a lake freighter with the wheelhouse located in the bow. They could be hauling oil but more than likely it is cargo of some type that they brought across an ocean and up the seaway to Lk Superior.
I don’t believe there are any refinery facilities on the US or Canadian side of Superior.
Refined product sails on Superior. Thunder Bay has storage capacity for diesel and gas that arrive by ship. I imagine Minnesota and Wisconsin do as well.

  11. The lead boat may not be loaded. It looks like it is sitting a bit high in the water. It may have ballast (water) that will be replaced with a load of grain or some other cargo. Many arrive in port on the great lakes empty and then pick up cargo.

  12. Those are mostly bulk carriers to this seadog’s old eyes.
    re Redpath ship:
“front to back”? “FRONT TO BACK”?
    “covered containers”?
    Arrrr.
In my day, a good keel hauling plus a day chained upside down to the
mizzen mast would be the cure for such landlubber talk on board ship.
    Arrrr.

  13. No doubt about it. I recognized it right away as typical global warming. We need higher carbon taxes to slow it down. BC has already done its part and Alberta is now sequestering the CO2 related to its oil and gas production. Cost millions but well worth it to prevent the planet from overheating, as shown by those trapped ships sweltering in that incredible heat. Ontario is teething at the bit to impose carbon taxes as per recommendation by Al Gore, and maybe a tiny bit by politicians that have wet dreams about the ability to tax nothing. I don’t understand how you deniers can even question all the predictions by Gore, Suzuki and the IPCC that the Arctic is in great peril regarding the loss of ice when the proof is in that picture. Just ignore those ships , obviously photoshopped. Ignore any distress calls too. Rigged to fool the uneducated thinking the planet’s really cooling. Windmills and Solar panels are the true road to salvation. Don’t question the experts or their ability to predict the climate 100 years from now. Look at their track record over the past 20 years and you can take comfort in their ability to turn us into a 3rd world country in order to save the planet. Think of the children. Demand higher taxes and more windmills. Thank God for the UN and Agenda 21, not to mention the millions demanding a end to fossil fuels of any kind. True world patriots that can see the future, unlike all you deniers.

  14. Whenever I see something like this I put it in an e-mail, making sure the photograph and link is included. Some of those I send it to are pretty staunch liberal/enviros who continue to insist we’re “experiencing the hottest year on record”.
Some of them don’t like it, but I think it important to continue pushing back on their baseless narrative, since their whole tactic is based on repetition without foundation,.

  15. Kind of reminds you of that TV documentry ICE ROAD TRUCKERS only this isnt alaska

  16. They look at lot like dry bulk carriers……wheat…iron ore….
Back in the early 90’s I was pulling Ontario Corn to Queerback and raw sugar (Cuban)back…3-legger dumps….
I recall a Cuban ship that had delivered sugar into Montreal taking on corn at Sorel.

  17. This is where I live. All the ships in the picture are lake freighters. Wheel house in the rear are the newer 1000 footers and the ones with the wheel house forward are the older design averaging 750 ft. Pretty much a copy of the Edmund Fitzgerald that went down about 15 miles out of range of the picture in 1975.
