Leave it to Quebec to go nuts about a senior feeding squirrels.
So is it “feeding the wildlife” if the deer are into your haystacks and crop?
Soooooooo
Tell me if I am wrong?
I can beat Canadian Pomeranian puppies to death with a club.
But if I feed a chipmunk I could get a 450 dollar fine and/or go to jail.
Stupid is as Stupid does-
Forrest Gump.
He sounds to me like an enviro dick for whom I have no sympathy but at least he’s not a “I won’t pick up my dog’s crap” activist. That would be messier.
“He literally brings in bags of peanuts and distributes them all around areas of the city, since at least 2006.”
Well then, obviously a career criminal. I have faint hope that he can ever be rehabilitated. Some time in the hoosegow should straighten him out,but there is the possibility that he would come out and start feeding larger animals, such as raccoons or civil servants.
Ahhhhaaa!!!
It starts with feeding squirrels, but escalates to feeding pidgeons, and then stray dogs and cats … and then he’ll be feeding leftover restaurant meals to homeless bums … and before you know it guys like him REALLY escalete their criminal behaviour all the way up to feeding sugary, salty, fatty JUNK FOOD to their own children … so authorities obviously HAD to step in to stop him, FOR THE CHILDREN!!!!!
So there’s some places in Montreal where bird feeders are illegal?
The Nanny State at its best. They have gone nuts.
I am not in favor of people feeding birds, squirrels, animals in residential areas…go out in the country and throw your seeds and they will follow.
I live in a nice house on a nice street and some old guys comes every day and starts throwing seeds, nuts, whatever to feed animals, be they birds or rodents, now if I went out and told him to get the hell of my street, would that be so bad. I dont need bird poop. squirrels eating my vegetables in the garden, etc.
I always wondered about people who feed wild animals…why don’t they give the money they spend to people who need it in the community. Wild animals always survive.
I for one hope they keep fining him….maybe then he will get a life.
Mike, I’m glad you’re not my neighbour. Adler was talking about you and your kind when he referenced the small minded pettiness of some people who get turned on by dictating how other people should live their lives. Get a life you commie wannabe.
I guess there are still folks that are not aware they are slaves that exist merely at the grace and to service the needs of the state….sigh.
The thing is even if you agree with this ridiculous infringement of rights of human beings, where are you gonna stop at? No where, as apparently there is no limit to the amount of interference or stupidity some are willing to impose.
We are in an incrimentalist police state.
Before any municipality can prosecute someone for contravening a by-law,they should be forced to demonstrate that actual harm occurred. In fact, they should have to prove that harm is being done before enacting any by-law designed to regulate or ban what would appear to be harmless activity.
In Ottawa, council has just passed a by-law banning smoking in certain open-air venues such as parks. The rationale for anti-smoking bylaws has always been the harm caused to others by second-hand smoke. Since that is obviously a minute or non-existent hazard outdoors, the only justification for this new by-law is the desire of councillors and zealots among the populace to outlaw behaviour of which they disapprove. BTW, I don’t smoke and have no “skin in the game”.
I just hate nanny-state busybodies. Westmount would seem to have lots of those.
An old Sam Gross cartoon comes to mind.
There’s a guy sitting on a park bench cooking a pigeon on a stick. The caption was something like ‘Why do you think I’ve been feeding them?’.
This all started because his 4 year old granddaughter drew a crayon picture of him feeding squirrels.
It’s for crimes like this I wonder why Canada no longer has the death penalty.
This poor man is going broke, spending nearly $3000 a year on nuts and seeds to feed squirrels. We desperately need a mandate to ensure he has adequate access to all the quality nuts and seeds he needs, putting an end to this War on Squirrel Health.
Where is Canada’s Crime Scene Investigation team (CSI) when we need them?
Poor Armand Morin cannot collect all the evidence by his self, $80K per year + benefits and a government pension cannot compensate for the stress when a highly trained CSI team can do it all in a few weeks.
Lawrence Klepper is obviously an environmental Nazi and a raaaaacist, if he was smart he would bring up Berry Sheck and the remainder of the OJ Simpson defense team.
As Canadians we should all be outraged with Mr. Klepper and throw as much public money into this as it takes to take this vile creature out of society and then parole Paul Bernardo for good behavior.
What a contrast between this post and the previous post on Omar Khadr.
We appear to be a Country that will welcome a terrorist murderer into the bosom of the Nation, but will arrest and jail a senior citizen for the crime of feeding squirrels.
Bizarre.
to me this almost mirrors throwing Linda Gibbons in jail for her anti-abortion protesting. the government seems to be just beside itself not knowing what to do with someone who wont do as their told over and over, so the think they have to throw them in jail to try to convince them to stop.
Sandra Fluke >
To begin with, once the proper criminal investigations are under way, we need to open agricultural & health investigations to determine whether or not this criminal was illegally distributing poor quality seeds and nuts.
Where were they from? Canada, Mexico, Brazil where?
There needs to now be environmental impact studies, social and mental health studies for the victimized community and surrounding communities, behaviour studies of community squirrels, birds, dogs, cats, ecetera….
This could take years probably decades, but we owe it to Canada to find out the truth!
This is not about squirrels and birds – it is about control. Same as the smoking bans and the bike helmets; the insane fanatical intolerance of such actions are designed to ‘cow’ people. Every freedom loving person in that man’s neighbourhood should get a bag of nuts and seeds and go feed the critters; let the fanatics arrest hundreds and clog up the court. Maybe wear a burka so they cannot identify individuals in pictures.
Strange, but I did not know this kind of Canada when I was growing up. Somewhere scientific tinkering has shifted us into a parallel universe where the nuts now rule and regulate. All those stories in the National Inquirer are true. Will look for the portal and let you know if I find it.

“Maybe wear a burka so they cannot identify individuals in pictures”
If they wore burka’s this would be a non issue. The city would pay for the seeds and offer free taxi service to the park.
Guilty as charged.
But they are such cute little bandits.
We live in an era where your kid’s crayon crimes or squirrel feed can net you an overreactive, abusive criminal take down. Do you need the jackboots kicking your door in to realize we are IN a police state? Think this will get better or solve itself?
Get active – resist.
The real problem is that we now have so many laws that nobody can be a law abiding citizen. We all commit several felonies everyday. If the bureaucracy wants you they can easily get you. This creates a fear of the government in the citizenry. That is not a mistake on their part. Fearful people are docile people.
Sure, the Occu-commies raped and pillaged people in city parks, but I bet they never fed a squirrel. They even complained about homeless people stealing their food!
Kevin @ 2:02 – exactly! Ken (kulak) has been writing about these Commie tactics for months, here at SDA. When everyone is a criminal then anyone can be arrested, charged, convicted. This puts everyone in a constant state of fear, fear makes people into cowards and the Commies rely on cowards for absolute control. Standing up for your own and your neighbour’s rights is the true grit test of any God faring, freedom loving man or woman – the test is even tougher when a person has a lot to loose. Some people always believe that they can make a ‘deal’ with the zealots – like the smokers who accepted the ‘sections for non-smoker’s in closed areas’ mime; it was not about non smoker ‘rights’ it was about eliminating the ‘choice’! Cowardly business men/women who lost their customers still have their heads firmly buried in the sand pile of cowards. No city or province or country has the right to bankrupt tax paying businesses if that nation hires elected people to govern.
I am allergic to air conditioning – why should I not be allowed to demand an un air conditioned space in every public building in Canada? That would raise quite a ‘stink’ in Kamloops, in July!
I don’t stay in air conditioned buildings, it is very easy to avoid them and I don’t run A/C in my car – I also smoke in the car – saves me a lot of money because people who don’t enjoy heat and cigarette smoke don’t ask me for rides.
#### the PO-LEECE!
Pardon my language but, this is just *%$$#&% IDIOCY*. Bureaucrats from the lowest to the highest levels of government have proven to me that they’re about useless as a grade school teacher when comes to dealing with societal issues. So what if a retired man wants to feed the animals, let him it’s his life on line, not someone else’s. And besides he’s doing it in a city park and not way out the wild where if you start feeding the animals then you’ve got problems.
Nuff Said
Thank goodness my 85 year old mother doesn’t live in that lala land. She buys bird seed and peanuts in bulk and her back yard has become the wild critters neighborhood lunch counter.
There are no words strong enough to describe the absolute stupidity of petty bureaucrats who would waste tax payers money to create vindictive laws like this and then hunt down citizens like they were known terrorists for throwing a few seeds and nuts to wild animals
Where’s PETA when you need them, they should be jumping in to protect someone who is trying to save these critters from starvation. Oh I forgot, squirrels and common neighborhood birds aren’t warm, fuzzy and photogenic enough for them to care about.
Is there a statute of limitations on shooting a squirrel with a pellet gun? I’ve been on the run now for close to half a century and they haven’t got me yet.
Texas-Canuck,you should be safe here at Small Dead Animals, but keep in mind, there’s no statute of limitations on murder.
What’s really funny is the “judge” had to take it under advisement.Maybe the guy should claim racist,as these are obliviously francophone animals.Call the CHRC!
Dr. Ferris is the government worker and Mr. Rearden is the industrialist.
“Did you really think that we want those laws to be observed?”, said Dr. Ferris. “We want them broken. You’d better get it straight that it’s not a bunch of boy scouts you’re up against—then you’ll know that this is not the age of beautiful gestures. We’re after power and we mean it. You fellows were pikers, but we know the real trick, and you’d better get wise to it. There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. Who wants a nation of law abiding citizens? What’s there in that for anyone? But just pass the kind of laws that can neither be observed nor enforced nor objectively interpreted—and you create a nation of law-breakers—and then you cash in on guilt. Now that’s the system, Mr. Rearden, that’s the game, and once you understand it, you’ll be much easier to deal with.”
Ayn Rand, Atlas Shrugged, (New York: Penguin Group USA, Inc., 1957; republished 1985) p. 436.
So everyone takes the side of the hapless animal feeder?
Lets see; why would the city have bylaws to stop people feeding the squirrels and birds? Is it just possible that it’s for sanitation and health reasons? The same reason there are doggie-doo bylaws?
Birds in large numbers s*it everywhere. They carry deadly diseases such as avian flue and junta virus.
Bird and squirrel feed brings in unwanted guests such as rats and mice, and out in the Left Coast, dangerous bears. When your kid comes down with some difficult to diagnose disease…?
Sorry folks, the city bylaws are right.
“He speculated that the municipality is getting back at Mr. Klepper for his vocal criticism of its development projects. Most recently, Mr. Klepper has been challenging a planned $38-million sports complex featuring two underground hockey rinks, a pet project of Mayor Peter Trent. “He’s a gadfly. He’s a thorn in their side,” Mr. Sutton said.”
let me guess.
a fat cat bizznizz boy doesnt like it when citizens interfere with his plans.
gotcha. see how easy it is to put a spin on things there rightwingers? just like you do.
So everyone takes the side of the hapless animal feeder?
Of course not, what a crazy idea.
I knock tree-rats on to the ground where the dog kills them and shares them with the ravens. Just maintaining the natural balance.

I think Rand identified this long ago.
