I, For One, Welcome Our New Self-Driving Overlords

Over the weekend, so-called “video-assisted referees” (or VAR) made a major mistake in the Liverpool-Tottenham match that denied Liverpool a goal, which proved to be the difference in the match. It was not the first error made by VAR — Sky Sports has documented 14 instances of VAR errors in the Premier League over just the past 2 seasons, for which an apology was later issued […]

Part of the application of technology to refereeing games is about reducing the uncertainty in judgments, but another part is about legitimacy; that is, the general acceptance of referee judgments and the overall integrity of competition. Technology, it turns out, presents challenges to legitimacy and the key to preserving legitimacy. Let me explain.

CFL Picks, Week 3

An attempt to continue my no good, horrible record of picking winners and losers.

Ottawa at Calgary, tonight 19:00 CST. Calgary by 10.
Winnipeg at Hamilton, Friday 17:00 CST. Hamilton by 5.
BC at Edmonton, Friday 20:00 CST. Edmonton by 10.
Montreal at Saskatchewan, Sask by 3.

It’s funny listening to players talk politics…it’s funny.

Time line:
Player makes a decision to disrespect the flag and anthem. Drags along a small amount of players.
Angers people during a political year. Ratings drop, but blamed on election.
Protests continue during the new season. Angers more people and ratings continue falling.
Politician does polling. Calls them sons of bitches for disrespect.
World erupts. Polling holds up, politician benefits.
Smoother politician makes a point.
Ratings drop a bunch, pocketbooks hurt.
League hoists white flag.
The high-school politicians went up against the pros and are getting their asses handed to them 99-0. #Winning.

Dab this.

I’m so laughing at the NFL.
Having lost or severely damaged their base of fans, Cam Newton does his best to alienate another demographic who might have supported the NFL players.
Forty years ago a white Cam Newton would have said, “It’s funny to hear a black man talk about quarter-backing.”
The female football fans I know, know as much or more about the game than I do. Those whose job it is, know as much as their male-counterparts. Those who play know as much as any NFL player. The only difference I’ve seen is the vociferous support of opinion (usually wrong) on the part of males.
The NFL deserves its fate and I hope it comes soon.
Update: Articles for dinosaurs.

Now Is The Time At SDA When We Juxtapose!

Then: “I would like to challenge every American that is watching this show to treat people better,” said Bennett, speaking at a CNN town hall moderated by Anderson Cooper. “That really is what it’s about. It’s about treating people like human beings. That’s the first step.”
Why, you ask, is Michael Bennett on CNN? For this. He self-identified as a poor black man racially discriminated against by the Las Vegas Police.
Now:

The footage shows a 3-man police team — made up of 2 hispanic officers and 1 black officer — identify Bennett as a suspicious person who did not get down on the ground as ordered during the hotel sweep.
Video shows Bennett crouching and running in the casino before bolting out of a hotel door, jumping over a gate and running to the street.

That’ll show Americans how to treat everyone better, Michael, you lying sack of race bait.

Thursday:
KC @ NE: Patriots.
Sunday:
NYJ @ BUF: Bills
ATL @ CHI: Falcons
BAL @ CIN: Ravens
PIT @ CLE: Steelers
ARI @ DET: Cardinals
JAX @ HOU: Texans
OAK @ TEN: Titans

Playoff day.

Packers at Falcons
and

I think the home teams take it to make it a Falcons/Patriots Superbowl. Course that might just be because while I’m a Seahawks fan, everyone I know cheers for either Green Bay or Pittsburg (or both).
