The decision is bizarre. Lithium, which is on a list of 31 minerals that Ottawa says are critical to Canada’s economy, is imperative to modern manufacturing, including large-scale battery storage needed for clean energy transition and, significantly, batteries for the flourishing electric vehicle (EV) industry.
Now the Zijin Mining Group Ltd is cleared to buy Toronto-based Neo Lithium Corp.
It was one of Parliament’s only open windows into the Trudeau government’s secretive dealings with Xi Jinping’s regime in Beijing. It was one of the few vantage points available for Canadians to get a glimpse of the Chinese regime’s influence operations in Canada.
Now it’s gone, at least for now, and while the Liberals’ aversion to any scrutiny of its China diplomacy is well known, it’s falling to the Conservative Party to shake off suspicions that its own internal calculus is the reason why the House of Commons Special Committee on Canada-China Relations is no more.
“Conservatives are not going soft on China,” Michael Chong, the Conservatives’ shadow minister for foreign affairs, told me Tuesday. “It’s not true. It’s just not true. I want to scream it from the rooftops. The Conservative Party’s position on China remains unchanged, full stop.”
And it is true enough, as far as it goes, but it’s going to be hard for the Conservatives to argue that they’re not getting squeamish about their party’s focus on the Xi regime’s malignant conduct in China, in Canada and abroad — no matter how broadly the party’s policy accords with overwhelming Canadian public opinion.

The Conservatives managed to establish the Special Committee over the Liberals’ objections in December 2019, but Conservative leader Erin O’Toole won’t be seeing to its restoration when Parliament resumes January 31. Chong makes a persuasive case that the reason is largely a matter of logistics.
Even so, it’s not a good look. David Mulroney, a senior fellow with the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy and a former ambassador to China, described the Special Committee’s demise as a “kneecapping,” describing the event this way: “A committee where we learned about Chinese influence operations is shot down by a Chinese influence operation.”
In early 2017, Justin Trudeau met with Stephen Schwarzman, CEO of investment monopoly Blackstone. While this raises multiple red flags, what has been overlooked is that the two have foundations working together.
At least one recruits for the Chinese Communist Party.
Immediately following this meeting, the sale of Retirement Concepts – a retirement home company in BC which receives the greatest proportion of government funding – was approved by the Trudeau. The organization receives over $85M a year. This raised eyebrows.
As it should have. The homes were sold to Anbang, a company owned at the time by the Chinese Communist Party. The sale to a state-owned corporation was covered up by using a shell company – Cedar Tree Investment. The founder of the Anbang is a man called Wu Xiaohui.[…]
The other odd thing about this meeting with Trudeau is that Schwarzman is in fact called “The China Whisperer,” because Blackstone openly invests in state-owned assets. Blackstone is one the world’s largest asset managers, holding over $500B in assets.
Update: Some have noted in the comments that Trudeau’s remarks here were taken out of context.
Context IS important. The turd was lamenting the fact that including the notwithstanding clause into the constitution was “a political calculation” on the part of his father. This whole discussion was precipitated by the Muslim teacher in Chelsea Quebec being removed because she was wearing a hijab.
I’ll remind everyone that this is the guy drawing up legislation to regulate our speech on the internet, who has forced healthy Canadians into “quarantine” hotels against their will. I don’t think context matters in his case, unless one wants to frame the remarks in the only way one can — as sanctimonious hypocrisy. Read it any way you please. It’s what he believes, notwithstanding clause notwithstanding.
Canada’s outgoing ambassador to Justin’s favourite country, is becoming chairman of a mining company that receives half its revenues from China.
And there are no major party leaders like this in Canada.
