Preview of Coming Controversies?

I had never heard of Janice Charette prior to her getting appointed to be the chief trade negotiator for Canada in upcoming negotiations with the U.S. Here’s a summary of her track recard:

The most significant and widely discussed controversy involves Charette’s recommendation to invoke the Emergencies Act for the first time in Canadian history to address the Freedom Convoy protests against COVID-19 mandates in Ottawa in early 2022. As Clerk, she advised the government on this, and Prime Minister Trudeau later stated that her formal recommendation as the top public servant played a major role in his decision to proceed.

The invocation was later ruled unreasonable and beyond legal authority (“ultra vires”) by a Federal Court, which found it infringed on Charter rights (freedom of expression under section 2(b) and unreasonable search and seizure under section 8).

I’m sure we’re in the best of hands.

    1. If you’re wearing rose colored glasses!

Guess she’s the best we have for the job. Theresa Tam was hot looking and good at her job, no?

  1. “I had never heard of Janice Charette prior to her getting appointed…”

She’s a former Clerk of the Privy Council…bureaucracy thrives in darkness.

    1. It appears as though GROK isn’t what I thought it was …

No major personal scandals (e.g., corruption, ethical breaches, or misconduct) appear tied to her in available sources. Much of the criticism is political or tied to policy decisions she advised on as a non-partisan public servant.

      “Non-partisan public servant”?
      “No ethical breaches or misconduct”?

Hey GROK! She summarily destroyed the Chartered Rights of the Truckers and ruined their lives. Sorry … that’s Ethics FAIL 101 for me.

      1. Clerks only fail when the public learns their names…Michael Wernick as the most recent exaample.

Grok that loser Kenji, see what it says.

  2. Another Ottawa federal government employee failing upwards. Typical. Imagine getting rewarded for advocating for the violation of rights of peaceful protesters *after* two courts have decided the invocation of the Emergencies Act by the Liberal government was illegal. No accountability, no apology, no consequences. Instead she is getting a promotion and likely a hefty pay increase.

Canada is crazy. Independence fixes this.

  3. Shining example of a “Nonpartisan Canadian Civil servant”.
All hail the State of Thuggery.
So what ever happened to Mr Trump Whisperer?
THE “BEST MAN IN CANADIAN POLITICS TO DEAL WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP?”
Caps lock, but I’ll go with it.
This is a typical Liberal stooge,a clown to throw to the pressitutes when the US/Canada free trade agreement utterly collapses this summer.
Lord Carney will insist,”Not my fault” as no deal is agreed to.

How does one distinguish between a Liberal and a lying thief?
Or is it a career requirement?
The new western nation that is rising from the ashes of Can Ahh Duh,had better think long and hard .
How to prevent such creatures from infesting and poisoning the institution of state.
Or is that unavoidable, hence The State must be curbed..
    And stomped regularly.

    1. I believe it also has to do with Marx Carnage being completely and utterly incompetent. His only skill is the ability to fake his way through, which he couldn’t even do as Governor of the Bank of England.

  4. He doesn’t want a deal, put a snivel servant instead of a successful business person is exactly what I’d expect from Conman? He needs to keep the anti-Trumpers frothing at the mouth because I think he wants a snap election? Even some Conservatives have Trump derangement syndrome, frankly one of these days those spitting hissing lunatics is going to make me lose my temper.

    1. “ I think he wants a snap election?”

      Partially correct

He wants the control afforded a PM that has a majority.
Whether he gets that by a snap election ™, or other means is irrelevant.
The take away is that he currently doesn’t have control and is forced to defer and delay.
      He delayed tabling the budget
He’s delaying a trade deal with the US
He’s deferred defence spending to a ten year period and hasn’t specified exactly what the billions are going to be spent on, spending requires tabling a budget.
He reduced the consumer carbon tax to zero but didn’t eliminate it.
The risk to this strategy is the voters that bought his schtick and are anxiously awaiting results.
They were single issue voters until Trudeau resigned, they are not so wedded to the liberals that they will give him a pass if he can’t provide one accomplishment.

    2. “Even some Conservatives have Trump derangement syndrome,”
John Shittrick comes to mind, butt I couldn’t prove his conservative bonifieds!

  5. Carney true to form as a senior bureaucrat gauges success on headcount and budgets, while rewarding his toadies that walked over the carcasses of other senior bureaucrats that were forced to fall on their sword.
She definitely looks the part of someone that wanted the trucker protesters punished for the high crime of illegally parking within sight of her office.
She is also a prime candidate for an online poll to get her name changed to Karen.

I’m sure there is no truth to the rumours that she was chosen because someone in the PMO thinks it’s a good idea to send someone that will repeat the same negotiating skills used by Freeland.

  6. Political correctness will lose the day if she’s unable to make a favorable impression on Trump. Has nobody in Ottawa noticed that he seems to have an aversion to unattractive people, especially women? This lady might be charming, accomplished and intelligent, but she’s as homely as a mud fence.

    1. “This lady might be charming, accomplished and intelligent…”

Dude. There’s no freaking way. That’s the picture of “Karen” in the dictionary. Mean and dumber than a bag of hammers. She’s going to demand to speak to his manager.

  7. Janice Charette isn’t just some bureaucrat. She is;
Former clerk of the Privy Council.
Former high commissioner to the U.K.
A specialist in inter-crown administrative law.
    – Something is up.
