Sleight Of Hand

Just think how much Canada could boost defense spending by shifting the budgets for all manner of random departments to National Defense.

Bartlett said one of the reasons Canadian GDP won’t get a boost is that shifting spending from other departments likely helped Canada hit its target. For example, the Coast Guard budget was moved from Fisheries and Oceans to Defence.

    1. Note that the US Coast Guard employs personal weapons, shipboard weapons and helicopter interdiction.

The canadian version is working on their DEI programs and fwench language training.

      1. Also just hands out tickets for having the wrong deep sea fishing licence. That is, if it can catch the fishing boat in question.

  1. A better discussion would be about the forming of an Alberta militia to assert independent sovereignty, and to enforce any separation conflicts with the King’s armed forces.

    1. Heh,already done.
Every licensed gun owner in the West.
Why do you think Ottawa is trying to steal longguns.?

  2. If tier 2 Canada continues to spend on military as it has been, after Alberta/Sask separate from this sinking ship then the goal will be met.
I’ve heard that military pensions are included in tier 2 Canada’s military spending, which I think is against the rules as well.
The US Coast Guard is part of the military, but as for the Canadian Coast Guard I think they should have some ice-breakers so they can access the northern coast. Not “one ice-breaker” … but a few of them.
Finland builds some nice ones, perhaps they could build something for Canada which no longer knows how to build anything on time and on budget.

  3. National defense = public defender. Close enough, right? C’mon they even sound the same!
National Ukraine spending? No wait, that doesn’t sound right. Whatever, shoehorn it in.
No wait, “national broadcaster!” My only question is what have they defense budgeted for “national angst.”
This is an even bigger pipe dream than pipelines. Peace, order and good government, indeed.
Who here agrees big government is good government? The jury is out, but they’re still socialist sequestered!

    1. You may have hit on something there!

The feds could buy as much ad time on CBC Pravda for more “people of color” and “women” ads for the “armed forces” and voila! More money for the propaganda arm of the liarberal party and more spending on “defense!”

  4. After Marx Carnage’s accounting tricks are completed, the ability for Kanada to defend itself will be no better, and likely worse, than it was before.

  5. Carney’s entire career has been about groveling, obfuscation, and outright lying. Why should this be situation be any different? He is a sniveller and a coward at his heart.

  6. I think it is possible that I am being shadow-banned on this platform. If you can see my message please reply to it. If I can see the reply I will donate to Kate’s Patreon.

    1. Well, I can see your message, but I can’t see your shadow. If I ever do see your shadow, can I make an original cast recording?

  7. Once again, government measures money spent….not results of that spending. This is a fraud from start to finish.

    1. Actually the Liberals measure spending announcements.

The same money is announced three, four, five times; creating the impression something is being done.

  8. National Defence has way too many problems to easily fix. The CAF is notoriously inept, overstaffed at most officer ranks and understaffed with NCMs (the people who do the work). Throwing large sums of taxpayer money at DND does not provide much bang for the buck. Think I am kidding, then look at the CSC project (Canadian Surface Combatant). DND has created a shadow engineering organization to backstop the primary contractor. THEY EXPECT THE PRIMARY CONTRACTOR TO DROP THE BALL.

Question: Why do we not have a task group formed up steaming to escort tankers loaded with our purchased oil out of the SOH?
    Answer: Because we can’t.

  9. Beautiful Carny Show.
Announce spending on everything as “Defence Spending”,Ottawa probably includes appealing the “Emergency ” court decisions as “defence spending”.
As you collapse GDP to zero.
Win Win,as the Chicken Dancers wave their wings.

After the West declares its independence from Can Ahh Duh,the announced defence spending will become an even more impressive percentage of Gross Domestic Product..
Very much ,as dividing by zero appears to make one wealthy.

    So typical of our Liberals.
When our allies protest our lies and deceit,we double down on the empty promises.

  10. The cost of tampons in the men’s can is literally counted as defense spending for NATO.

  11. “It said it also included spending on pensions paid to retirees.”

So, it’s just typical government accounting tricks to get over 2%?

“Bartlett said one of the reasons Canadian GDP won’t get a boost is that shifting spending from other departments likely helped Canada hit its target. For example, the Coast Guard budget was moved from Fisheries and Oceans to Defence.”

What other spending was shifted to defense?
