…has executed a near flawless energy policy. It produces more than 90% of its electricity from carbon-free hydropower, with the balance coming from other renewable resources like wind. The country’s nearly 1,700 hydroelectric dams are buttressed by approximately 1,000 water reservoirs that collectively represent a backup power supply equivalent to 70% of its annual consumption. Norway produces so much clean electricity that it routinely exports a meaningful amount to its neighbors in Europe. Most Norwegian homes are warmed in the winter using heat pumps or electric heaters, and more than 90% of its new vehicle sales are either full battery electric (BEV) or plugin hybrids (PHEV). In essence, Norway is an “electrify everything” green utopia.

Norway is also blessed with an abundance of oil and natural gas reserves—far more than it could ever consume domestically— and the country has been incredibly thoughtful as to how it exploits its resources and who ultimately benefits from them. In 1990, the Norwegian parliament passed legislation creating what is now the Government Pension Fund Global, and surplus revenues from its petroleum sector have been swept into it ever since. The fund is used to dampen the impact of economic volatility on government budget planning, diversify the country’s wealth beyond its borders, and secure the well-being of its future generations. As of March 31, 2023, the fund had a value of $1.36 trillion, or approximately $250,000 per citizen.

Given this fact set, the data on Norway’s annual oil consumption may come as a surprise.

Fortunately for Norway, they have the mountains, rivers, and Fjords to satisfy most of their Hydro electric power demands, as does BC and Quebec, but our planet is not equally blessed with the same terrain to employ hydro power, and each area should be using what is best for their region. Example, Iceland uses thermal heat from the volcanic grounds there. In most places oil is the best use of energy transformation, and to suggest that oil use is causing global change is asinine. One major eruption from a large volcano will cause more greenhouse gasses than humans together have produced in the last century. There are around five hundred volcanoes on this planet, so I think they have the competition beat on the climate change front. Using what is best in any particular region is really the way forward, but politicians and the WEF manipulated greenie mafia useful idiots and are not known for intelligence and rational thought.

      As Canada is such a large country (2nd largest in the world by land mass), we could accomplish the same goals, if only we had some unity towards a common goal and a cessation of indoctrination that the world is dying because some people drive pick up trucks and like cheeseburgers..

    1. Stabilize the economy with a balanced portfolio of investment, much
    of it foreign. This protects it to a significant degree, from regional and
    E.U./Western mismanagement(recession/depression). Which is the
    major current problem facing the E.U./U.K./U.S./Canada…
    2. The low cost/reliable hydro electrical shields it’s manufacturing
    from the price spikes from the anti-fossil fuel (Cult.Marxist)cult which
    has crippled Western economies, while subsidizing the rise of
    Communist China. Who are now so wealthy, their government can
    buy off any politician in the West, whose personal amorality(greed,
    lust for power…Seven Deadly Sins) allows selling their soul and
    nation-state to that same C.C.P. gov’t. they knowingly kowtowed to!

    3. Norway’s Sovereign Wealth fund allows it’s government to pay
    for pensions and social services out of generated wealth, not tax
    increases that damage the economy.

    4. Will Norway, Sweden and Denmark be a united political/economic
    regional power of Vikings once again?

    examples of how a former economic/political powerhouse falls to

      And Norway also has access to world markets, unlike landlocked Canadian oil which is sold to the US at heavily discounted prices.

    Norway has 5.4M people and area of 385,207 square kilometres. About the population of BC.
    Canada now claims 40M (cbc) people in an area of 9.9 million sq. km.

    Norway average temp 27 degrees Celsius in the summer months and average around 2 degrees Celsius during the winter.

    Of course much harder to get an average temp for Canada, Windsor is much different from Hay River.

    Comparing Norway and Canada not really something easy to do, and a significant number of real differences.

  6. Most of Norway’s wealth comes from petroleum. Huge oil fields in Norway’s territorial waters were found in the 1960s. A public-private company called StatOil was created in the late ’60s to harvest this bounty. The state owns 67% of one of the world’s largest oil companies so the state banks the profit from that company and the tax on any oil or gas that is exported to Europe. Statoil became Equinor in 2018 at which time it had oil drilling operations in 36 countries. On a per capita basis, Norwegians have more oil wealth than Arabians. Norway can afford to be a socialist country because of their oil wealth, without it economically they would be another Ireland.

    Norway is probably the best case scenario for net zero. The government has a huge fund to bankroll the “green” energy transition, it’s unique geography provides many lakes that can be used as water reservoirs for hydro-electric generation and it has a long coastline for windmills. The majority of the population lives on the coast, which is warmed by the gulf stream, instead of the interior plateau where winter is much colder. In spite of all these advantages they are still using the same amount of oil because it makes sense to do so.

    1. Go figure. Norway oil is cool because it is owned mostly by the Norwegian government. Canada’s oil fields have not been socialized so they are not cool, and must be shunned.

    Data released by the Norwegian Road Federation mirrors what already is way more visible than noisy on roads across the Nordic country. The majority of new cars are electric.

    In percentage, the Norwegian EV sales last year were almost ten times higher than the average in the European Union (80% vs. 8,6%).

    But, since their so great, Norway must have been well on their way to these great numbers pre-COVID. So… 2019 population statistics US, CA, NO, used to calculate per-capita daily barrel of oil consumption based on the referenced BP Statistical Review.
    Drum roll please…… per person per day:
    US 15.9
    CA 14.7
    NO 23.9
    Huh….. go figure. 50% more per person per day than the US, 62% more per person than Canada.
    Can’t wait for 2023 data.
    (P.S. Norway has 0, zero, zip, nada, nuclear power.)

  9. I recall a few years ago reading that Norway ended subsidies for electric cars and sales of new Teslas tanked. Did they put the subsidies back?
