Schadenfrozen

@JavierBlas Day-ahead electricity prices in Europe are eye-watering, with lots of countries setting record highs for today. Notable to see the Nordics close to €400 per MWh, and Germany at €600. Before 2020, anything above €75-100 was considered expensive

As the Finnish Prime Minister parties into the night: Fingrid has published its first estimate of the adequacy of electricity for the coming winter. The war in Europe and the exceptional situation on the energy market have increased uncertainties related to the availability of electricity. As a result of the great uncertainties, Finns should be prepared for power outages caused by possible electricity shortages this coming winter.

    1. the funny thing that should be obvious to people claiming that the US$ will be replaced by whatever currency they are talking about these days, is that you can literally use a US$ anywhere in the world, and people will accept it as currency. The same can’t be said about the EU$ or china’s currency

      1. What currency do the people in foreign countries keep in their mattresses?
Dollars. Maybe a few Euros or Pounds, Gold jewelry if they can, but always dollars.

Remember the Ukrainian politician’s mistress that got caught running west with $10 million in her suitcases? Dollars, Euros, and Jewels. Not a Russian Ruble, Chinese renminbi, or whatever the Ukrainian currency is called.

  1. Most times STUPID can only be fixed with a good dose of SUFFERING…

This example is in the immediate bad news but good news for the long run.
The words of wisdom “All we need is a good famine” comes to mind.

The Great Awakening has been cleared for take off, make sure to buckle up for the rough turbulence ahead.

    1. Metalguru, You can’t fix STUPID! However, a good dose of suffering can slow the speed of stupid a bit!

      1. and bragged and browbeat everyone about it…I feel bad for the minority that were swept up along with the Enviro-marxist push

    1. Yeah JG3, and Canada is led by French derivatives. Mind you, you have an Irish derivative leading the US, and that ain’t working well either. Our ships of state are captained by idiots with cabinets full of fools!

  2. Notice the coloring of the average market prices graphic is in a rare “ice-cold blue”.

      1. What’s interesting is I have noticed some leaves falling already off some trees.
Hope it isn’t an ominous sign of something to come this winter.
Haven’t checked the Farmers Almanac yet.

  3. Italy is expected to swing far-right to Meloni, a Russian-loving woman who identifies as Neo-Facist according to the MSM. Whatever “far-right” means in Italy. But expect a deal with Russia and the EU before November. Initiated by Italy and backed by Germany. People don’t like to freeze in the dark. They prefer to be screwed in broad daylight.

  4. I wonder how many realize that it could all be fixed if they allowed fracking. The Church of Greenpeace is now dispensing Kool aid with a Jimmy Jones endorsement on the label and the Euro-weanies are drinking it. Adding the obligatory Canada almost as deranged addendum.

  5. Yea, Well it’s the Beatnicks, Hippies and freaks running the planet these days….and it shows.

I recall seeing g mass demonstrations in Germany over Nuclear Energy… that was in the early ’60’s….those involved..?? Read up.

Same gangrene crowd trashed our Oil sands as well….so given my living depended upon said oil sands do ya think I’ve any Fks left to give about what is surely going to happen to them all…???? That includes my Fascist Country of birth as well….

    Nope n Nope.

As per Ralph Klein: Let them Eastern Bastards freeze in the dark….oh, and let’s ship Notley, Suzuki, Naomi Klein and a few others to experience the results of their desired Climate Change Initiatives first-hand hmmm??

  6. Anyone do the math on watt we’re paying here per megawatt? Think it’s a bit over 420 dollars plus service charges.

    1. 1000 kilowatt = 1 megawatt

      1 eur= 1.29 cad

400 eur per megawatt in Nordics

      400 x 1.29 = 516 cad per megawatt

516 divided by .001 = 51 cents per kwh in Nordics

11 cents per kwh currently here.

      Robespierre…. Wherefore art thou?
Stipulation : Canadian educated -please check.

        1. When you add in all the service charges and taxes it is almost 24 cents kwh all in, paid in after tax earnings and not deductable if you are not a business.
That’s on the higher TOU schedule.

  7. Looks like the plan to switch to sun and wind is working out pretty well – the forward prices for the next day … and we are in August only.

Smart as the German Gov is … yesterday they confirmed the decision to end nuclear power – as planned – end December. Good luck for the coming winter.

  8. Weird. Almost all of Norway’s electricity is generated via hydro. Unless there’s been a drought, which means they’d have to buy it from other places…why the high prices?

  9. I worked in Power Plants in the early 1990’s. Transmission and Distribution were all friendly with the other utilities, and before the mergers, there were a LOT of small electric utilities in Iowa. Every utility helped the others out, because next week it could be you needing help.

Prices were $16-25 per MegaWatt. It never got over $40/MWe, except for like 30 hours over 5 days in the hot summers. We burned Coal, Gas, and Uranium. If you were a little short, someone would crank up more steam at one of their plants and help out. Twice a year we ran back the nuclear plant to 50% for a few hours on Thanksgiving and Christmas to keep the coal plants running at minimum output. Then came the brilliant ideas of “Competition” to lower your prices. You might save 10% or 15% on your bill average bill of $30-$60/month. Then came the walling off of Transmission, so you could not talk to each other, share needs and resources. Then came the mergers. Suddenly all the little utilities merged together or were gobbled up by huge multistate utilities. Remember Enron? “Screw the CA grid, we can make big money by shutting down the right power plants on the right week.”

A buddy said, “I worked in the same cubicle for 10 years, through 4 mergers, and three different corporate names. I saved so much on electricity, my bill doubled.” A few years later? Average power was $40-50/ MWe. Bad Days? You could be paying $100/ MWe.

Now it is even worse with all the “FREE” Wind and Solar Power. Half of TX lost power during the winter two years ago. Hundreds died. Millions of people got gas and electric bills for $THOUSANDS of dollars for 2-3 days usage. My BIL in way up in Minnesota had a $400 monthly gas bill because of the TX Freeze. I had propane, and missed it all.

    1. Everyone helped everyone else out. You know why?

They did not make money off of marking up electricity. They did not make money marking up your gas. You helped your fellow utility because that keeps their customers happy, and when they help you out, it keeps your customers happy.

They made their money from the 18% guaranteed return they received for Approved Capital Costs invested in providing electricity and gas to all their customers. At the end of the year? They refunded any excess moneys collected from gas and electric sales to the customers. Then the political do-gooders in the government and utility boards starting making them invest in their political pet causes with special programs, “Community Investment,” and now “Social Justice.” Smart utilities tried to make sure that spending was all added to their 18% guaranteed return.

Widows and Orphans owned their stocks because it was an almost guaranteed dividend income. Not Now.

  10. What can’t go on, won’t.

    Whoda thunk it?

Anyone complaining about freezing to death is just one of a small minority of racists, etc.
