The Sound Of Settled Science

The latest on snake oil;

The scientific basis behind commonly used antidepressants is completely backwards, according to a review of the research.

For almost 50 years it has been believed by scientists and the public alike that depression is related to low levels of serotonin in the brain.

The most commonly prescribed antidepressant medications — like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft — are thought to work by keeping serotonin levels higher.

So-called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, block the re-absorption of serotonin into the cells that release it.

In fact, the review finds, the very best evidence available suggests people who are depressed actually have higher levels of serotonin in their brains, not lower.

This means that commonly used antidepressants are actually making the situation worse, not better.

  1. Well, we can rest assured about one thing: the giant pharmaceutical companies will immediately stop producing and promoting any medication that doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do.

    Right? 😉

  2. Interesting, but the proper response is not…

    All of our previous conclusions on antidepressants have been wrong.

    But rather….

    It’s just one paper. We shouldn’t abandon past results, but rather test these claims with more research.

    1. I agree with the rodent on this one.
      My older sister is about 83 now and went on prozac about 2000 … maybe earlier and had great results. Unfortunately old age has her nuttier than squirrel turds at times now but to claim prozac makes your depression worse is just nucking futs in my sister’s case. Perhaps there is a dosage issue at play too? Also some people are nuts enough that there ain’t no pill gonna “get their minds right”.
      Your results may vary.
      Keep your stick on the ice ladies & gentlemen!!!

  3. Almost every single mass shooter has been on SSRIs. This has been shown consistently over decades. People on SSRIs also have higher levels of suicide and in fact on their “side effects” warnings, suicidal ideation is one of the common side effects.
    To be fair, people on SSRIs are usually taking them because they’re already depressed, but still, this needs to be looked at more fully.
