But for all the horrors of racial slavery, the biggest killers in the 20th century were Mao, Stalin and Hitler, and in no case was skin colour an issue. In the Holocaust, ethnicity was explicit, and in the Holodomor, class warfare intersected with a cultural tradition of individual farming, not communal farming, to make Ukrainians the main target of Stalin’s deliberately engineered famine. And today the biggest threat isn’t the one related to race, and our foreign minister shouldn’t be in denial about it.

That is such an expansive and generalized label, you cannot possibly define it a precise manner. Crimes against humanity simultaneously means everything bad and nothing bad. In this instance, we are discussing the African slave trade as it applies to European involvement Well, the fact is, European involvement was short lived. The argument could also be made, very effectively, that Europeans were far more humane in the treatment of slaves than the Arabs and Africans. At first I took issue with the NP author calling slavery an evil of racist white supremacists. Slavery isn’t a racist institution per se.
But I can now understand how people would come to see slavery as a racist institution because of those who resort to biased rhetoric in support of the institution, e.g. the trivializing the experience of Africans who were shipped over to the Americas as slaves.

He’s wrong about the holocaust. The nazis tried to exterminate the Jews based on race. Anyone who has been to the holocaust museum in Washington can confirm this. The nazis spent a massive amount of effort classifying Jewishness – they had charts for things like nose length, shoulder slump and scouting systems for it all.
Sure there were roots of ethnic hate there as there is with most racism.
