Digging deep: Smith and Ford announce Northern Shield Energy Corridor pipeline
Call it Energy East 2.0, but kinda sorta, not really. There’s no Moosomin on-ramp like Energy East. It doesn’t make it past the Quebec border, yet. But it could possibly have offshoots to Churchill and maybe James Bay. This is the Saskatchewan perspective story on this pipeline

As an American interested in the oil/gas business as far as America is concerned, the announcements of a new West Coast pipeline from Alberta to BC and another one to Ontario from Alberta seem like forward thinking accomplishments. To me Smith and Ford working together and Carney getting out of the way is good for Canada.
Do folks here agree with that assessment?
Do you think they will both be built without too much pushback by 1st Nations and the anti-economy Leftists and “Environmentalists?”
I’d be surprised if either of them is built. Ever since the Liberals were elected in 2015 they have been working to make it impossible for private companies to build a pipeline. So now they announce one to the west coast, but no private company will touch it because of all the government imposed costs, rules, regulations, requirements and consultations. Then there will be the inevitable lawsuits, court imposed delays and civil disobedience. On top of that, this government has a history of changing the rules when it’s half built.
Both Alberta and Canadian governments know all that. So government is going to build it for $44 billion cost to taxpayers. But first they have to get through all the consultations and lawsuits. And if it ever does manage to get built it will take 20 years and cost at least double.
So I’m not holding my breath.
I agree with you Dirtman. I think this is a Lucy and Charlie Brown football moment.
The only way a pipeline will be built is when AB and SK separate from Canada. The indigenous peoples can get on board or get left behind. And do NOT give me any guff about Indians being “stewards of the land”. I have driven through many reservations or First Nations and the only one which is decent and kept like a suburb is the Ocean Man Indian Reservation just north of Stoughton. The homes are well maintained, there is no trash or broken down vehicles on the ground and both the schools and band council buildings are well maintained. It is interesting that the men mostly work in the oil and gas industry. I do not know about the women, but I get the impression (and yes, I could be wrong) that they are mostly stay at home wives and mothers taking good care of the house and their children.
Pipe Dream
According to news reports:
The Northern Shield Energy Corridor planned pipeline “is currently undergoing consultation processes with First Nations. As of now, the pipeline has not yet been formally approved by First Nations.”
Steps to move forward include a feasibility study along with agreements on indigenous participationto to “ensure meaningful participation and input from Indigenous communities throughout the process.”
Well, the devil is in the details…..and if these pipelines are eventually funded by government, then what we are really seeing is a clandestine nationalization of the pipeline industry in Canada and gives the feds control over the oil and gas industry in Canada. But that should surprise no one given that Carney is a classic economic fascist.
You Can’t Get There From Here
First Nations are already voicing opposition and queueing up for traditional profiteering.
I put these on the same timeline as California’s high speed choo choo boondoggle.
That kid polishing the headlights will be married with three kids by the time anything is complete.
The Aamjiwnaang FN in Ontario already wants in on the action. As long as the Liberals are in power, no pipeline will be built.

The distance from Edmonton to Texas is shorter.
The Keystone Pipeline was started and then stopped multiple times. All it takes is a Democratic president to bugger it up.
Indians and liberal judges like buggering as well.
But the Americans demand a discount for the “privilege” of buying our oil and gas.
There is no discount. Natural gas and oil are priced on the world market and oil is priced based on its specific gravity and sulfur content.
And that’s why the price in Ft. Mac is exactly the same as the price in Cushing, Oklahoma.
Wab and his Chief friends in Manitoba will want there cut of the pie too.
Unlikely to ever happen due to the obstacles noted in several posts above. Additionally there is the problem of Premier Bob Canoe in Manitoba. As a dutiful NDP politician, he would certainly find compelling reasons to obstruct pipeline construction.
An another but closely related topic there is this in the National Post today.

If they have mismanaged the economy for the last ten years why would we think they can change things under this new leader?
But what does Neil Young think about the pipeline?
Smokin’ that shit again, aren’t you?
It’s my medicine maaaaan
It’s a great idea. But it’s been tried multiple times, starting around 1980, with no success.
But with Trump trying to eviscerate the Canadian economy, maybe this time we’ll find the political will.
“But with Trump trying to eviscerate the Canadian economy”
Trying? That’s hilarious. If President Donald Trump wanted to hurt us that badly he would simply DO SO, and there would be NOTHING Canada could do about it. Zero. Not a single thing.
(and no, whining about how unfair it was wouldn’t count as ‘doing something’, sorry…)
Besides, how do you eviscerate something that has already gutted itself?
KM is still in denial about all that. He thinks Canada is still humming along just fine.
I almost look forward when the excuse Trump is moves on ……. I wonder what BS the Progs will manufacturer then ?
They’ll need another target …..
And thus country will just be weaker, and more corrupt.
What then?
Trump is powerful, but he’s not all powerful. Constitutionally Congress has the sole power to levy duties. They have shared some of that power with the president through various statutes, but it’s limited and rather tedious. Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962 is one of his few weapons left, especially since the SCOTUS ruled that Trump was misapplying the IEEPA.
So no, Trump is somewhat hobbled. He still has to follow the law.
And he has done so. Canada is hooped.
Oh! So it’s all good for Canada now. Trump has been slapped down by the POTUS … some dysfunctional myopic bureaucratic “Board” is back in-charge of Trade and Tariffs. So Canada is humming right along … building stuff for American Multinational Corporations at a huge discount thanks to the intentionally devalued Canadian dollar.
So everything is back to normal, right? Just as you predicted. Congrats Canada! Your economy is back to its regular dependency on America. Phew! That was close.
No more mid-table needs.
I never once said it’s all good but sure, you make your vacuous, snarky comments. It really adds to the conversation.
My next band, Snark Vacuum.
You worry about trade and tariff Boards … I’ll just revel in the US Stock Markets. Pssst. that’s not snark … it’s reality. Economic reality.
Yeah, my snark vacuum sucks up more bullshit than a Dyson.
Ohhhhhhhhh mommmaaaaaaaa … KM hardest hit.

Canada has done that to itself. The economy was effectively eviscerated under the Trudeau Liberals.
Even getting the corridor alignment set, starting indigenous consultations and getting the environmental studies started is a head start on what has evolved into a ten year plus process before shovels can hit the ground. By the time the process is well underway we may have a government with a clue and private companies starting to show interest.
Good to see a kid with initiative. Used to do touchups on cloudy headlights with toothpaste and a wet sponge. He is way beyond that.
The only thing Canada does well and with haste, with little to no regulation and zero environmental considerations, is flood the country with spear-chuckers, vest-clackers and beach-shitters.
The eastern pipeline is long overdue. Have seen comments that it should parallel the CPR rail line through the Canadian Shield. This has already been surveyed and would have the advantage of not “trespassing” on indigenous lands.
It is long past time that Canada got rid of that idiotic “traditional land” BS. And that is what it is. BS.
Canada falls on it’s spear.
The End.
That pipeline looks to be jusssst about as long as the transcontinental railroad.
The transcontinental railroad took about six years to build, from 1863 to 1869. It was completed on May 10, 1869, when the two rail lines met at Promontory, Utah.
Hahahahaha ha ha ha ha ha … well, THAT ain’t gonna happen.
What is the business case for such a long isolated pipeline?
What is the projected rate of return.?
Infrastructure makes sense when sufficient people benefit .
When the taxpayers are bankrupted by the building ,is it still a “good use of taxpayers dollars?
Line 5 got built where it is,for good economic reasons.
What has changed?
Brian, good on the young man, it will teach patience and perseverance!
I also offer this service to my customers, some lights can be quite challenging with the different shapes and plastics involved. I use a multi sand/wet sand/buff and seal process, the results can be quite striking. even if not perfect, it certainly allows more light to pass through!
One thing to note, if he isn’t already using it, a UV blocking protectant will make the job last longer, average is about 5 years, before they go milky again, but you can re polish, again!
There are cast in indicators in the plastic, so you can see the depth to which they can, or have been sanded..
yes, he does include a sealant.
I had no idea seals and ants could crossbreed like that?
