  1. Cranky old hippie………..but he’s got a point, with the mega-tech companies.
Rocknroll is dead, at least in its past form.
Yutes today are either into techno, or rapcrap.

  2. “Leave the oil the ground.” Didn’t seem to bother him about the spectacular loss of economic potential.
So t’hell with ya Neil. Don’t care about your royalties. Yes, I am laughing.

  3. Neil doesn’t like it when the shoe is on the other hand. Doesn’t pay to shoot yerself in the foot, especially if the foot is in yer mouth, eh Neil?

  4. Confession: Neil Young is probably my FAVORITE rock/folk (whatever) muscian of all time … while I simultaneously viscerally detest his politics.
However, the one thing Neil does have is pretty damn solid and straight integrity. His Bridge School concerts have raised tens of millions of dollars, and he has steadfastly … over all these years … refused to allow his music to be used for Doritos advertisements … or ANY advertising. He has left perhaps a Billion dollars on the floor for his belief that artistry should not be tainted by cringeworthy advertising.
And he is 100% correct about the digital state of the music industry. You know I am an analog/vinyl aficiando … and Neil licenses his music for lots of re-mastering and re-issues of supreme quality vinyl … he even engineers, masters, and presses some of it himself. And always freely provides the original analog multi-track tapes. And he is right about musicians losing all acceptable capitalistic profit motive for creating music. As currently constructed … the ONLY way a musician can make $$$ (like a talented capitalist should) is to go on tour. Concerts provide the ONLY significant revenue stream for musicians. It is a shame. I WANT talent to be PAID extraordinary $$$. A talented musician whose music resonates with the public is certainly “worth” as much as an NFL quarterback … no? Of course they are. I LOVE the PROFIT motive. It is a BEAUTIFUL thing that has supercharged mankind’s progress.
Now … shall we talk about the NCAA paying SLAVE WAGES to young black athletes who generate $Billions for colleges football and basketball leagues. The NCAA colleges pocket $Billions in exchange for … room and board (and an incomplete degree in “mass media”). Just like picking cotton for room, board, and passive English lessons.

  5. What an A-whole.
The Province of BC mines & ships 23 million tonnes of coal out of SE BC to Roberts Banks coal terminal. Pretty much pure carbon. No issues over “downstream emissions” like he seems to have for “tar sands oil”. More oil is spilled at your local oil change unit on a daily basis. What’s he drive to get to gigs, a DIESEL bus? It sure ain’t electric.

  6. Maybe it’s my youthful ignorance speaking but- Who the hell is Neil Young??
Oh, right, he’s that whiny, poor- man’s Tom Petty.

  7. “And he is right about musicians losing all acceptable capitalistic profit motive for creating music.”
“As currently constructed … the ONLY way a musician can make $$$ (like a talented capitalist should) is to go on tour.”
Boo-frickin’-hoo. Just like the troubadours of olde before recording media was invented.
Entertainment is doomed now that the only option is to sell their songs for a Doritos commercial for mere $Millions. That must suck.

  8. Young has morphed into the millionaire version of the cranky old bastard that yells at people to get off his grass.

  9. When the intellectual property rights are fair and balanced, then I would care what these pompous asses have to say about their works. Inventors other than those in the music and movie industry are only afforded under 20 years of protection for their works, while these clowns get generational protection. What makes them so special over the backyard inventor investing his life savings into bringing an invention onto the market. If Neil Young never makes a cent off of the public listening of his music, it would make me smile.

  10. As I recall, Scott Young, a noted Canadian journalist and Neil’s father wasn’t particularly impressed by his son’s “talent”. Frankly, I was never impressed either. He’s still an insufferable prick.

  11. Kenji – regarding your last paragraph ‘Now … shall we talk about the NCAA paying SLAVE WAGES to young black athletes who generate $Billions for colleges football and basketball leagues.’
I’ve read some analysis that the liberals Title IX might make paying these athletes problematic. If they pay the money making male football and basketball players a salary, they would have to pay the same salary to the women’s field hockey team, table tennis teams, golfers etc. Not usre if true, but if it is the only way around it would be to eliminate those other sports. Liberalism fails again.

  12. I believe there may be surgery to correct your affliction, kenji.
I was never a fan of the most nasal voice in all of music,Neil Young’s. I once stayed with friends when his “Harvest” album had just been released.
Their daughter played “Heart of Gold” so many times I considered hanging myself, but wisely chose to thank them for their hospitality and cut the visit short.
Neil Young has done so much harm to the Canadian oil industry, it far outweighs his alleged talent, and his $20 million home in Hawaii is a good example of typical showbiz personalities “do as I say not as I do” mentality.
If you must have favorite musician from Winnipeg, choose Randy Bachman, who wrote and played better than Neil, and had the good sense to never get involved in drugs or politics.

  13. Is there a law that states musicians have to be millionaires?
Of course there is. They need to be amply compensated for suffering for their art. (Yeah, right.)

  14. Where else is he going to keep his model trains?
He bought Lionel at one time and I believe he still owns the company.

  15. A talented musician whose music resonates with the public is certainly “worth” as much as an NFL quarterback … no?
No. Said musician is worth solely what people are willing to pay for his creative output, and not one cent more. If you don’t like the fact that people are willing to pay more for an NFL quarterback than a classic rock & roll musician, well, those damn kids won’t get off my lawn either.
Inventors other than those in the music and movie industry are only afforded under 20 years of protection for their works, while these clowns get generational protection.
You’re confusing patent and copyright law. That’s silly. Yes, copyright duration has been extended to a ludicrous extent and there needs to be some rectification there, but you’re comparing apples and oranges.

  16. You guys(and gals) are brutal. I just hit DELETE for all my snarky comebacks. So, can we all just agree to call this one of my guilty pleasures ?
Speaking of nasally hippie street people singers … I once saw Tom Petty and Bob Dylan together in concert. A week later, I went to the Doctor to be examined for nasal polyps …

  17. The old burnout shouldn’t be so hard on himself, his concerts aren’t that bad are they?
The diesel burning buses running outside, not so much.

  18. I hope Neil Young will remember, a southern man don’t need him around anyhow. Neither does a northern man.

  19. Yeah … sadly … Title IX likely WOULD demand equal distribution of “appearance fees”. Of course, absent such Communist interferences such as Title IX … the athletes should be PAID in accordance with their VALUE and REVENUE to the University. Sorry female water polo players … you get $0.25/hr, while the Heisman Finalist Quaterback who has led the football team to a 9-0 season gets $15,225.00/hr
In the name of … “fairness” …
A massively $$VALUABLE$$$$$$ young stud of a black athlete gets paid the EQUIVALENT of Plantation SLAVE WAGES … for his hard work and personal RISK.
All because of some upper middle class white girl who learned to play water polo at her daddies country club.
Nice NCAA ! Nice Colleges ! keep preaching that “white privilege” … while STUFFING $$$CASH$$$ into YOUR pockets. Don’t. give me. that. goody…good bullll- – -sh****t

  20. Don,
I had the good fortune of seeing Randy Bachman at our local performing arts centre which holds about a thousand people. It was a combination of him playing some of his hits and telling stories, similar to a radio show he was doing at the time. He told a great story about Young, who the Guess Who band members had become good friends with.
So Neil Young comes back to Winnipeg after joining Crosby, Stills and Nash and he’s playing some of the music for Bachman and Cummings and one of the songs has Crosby taking the lead and Bachman says, “Wow, who’s that singing…amazing voice” and Young says, “that’s David Crosby.” Young plays another song where Stephen Stills takes the lead vocal and again Bachman and Cummings are blown away. Bachman says, “What an incredible voice, who is that?” Young tells them it’s Stephen Stills. Then Young plays a song where he takes the lead and, of course, Bachman says, “Oh man, who’s that he really needs some work.”
Bachman gave the impression that Young was a little full of it even back then.
Having said all that, I’m still a big fan. The man can really rock out. It’s easy to see why the grunge world fell in love with him.

  21. Enjoy Neil’s music. It’s free!

But then I’d have to listen to the talentless sh*t-for-brains’ atonal bleating.

  22. Doesn’t her singing make you proud and honoured to be a Canadian? Me, neither.
In fact, she reminds me of that bit out of the movie Citizen Kane in which one of the Mrs. Kanes fancied herself as an opera singer. Someone wrote a work especially for her and it was given a public performance. It was awful, she was frequently off-key, and the critics panned it, including one of Kane’s buddies.

  23. So now I have to ask all you music aficionados out there…
Years ago I heard that The Band had Robbie Robertson’s mic turned off.
“they said “he was a great songwriter, but couldn’t sing well.”
    True?
    Asking for a friend

  24. C’mon conservatives song writing falls into intellectual property rights. Songs come about by creative intelligence. In a modern first world country we protect ideas and invention.
There is a sunset on ownership -that’s how Michael Jackson ended up owning the copyright on much of the Beatles book.

  25. About musicians ( actually anyone who writes songs/music ) getting screwed he is right.
I read an article two weeks ago in which a band was saying that after their song was downloaded 5680 times , Spotify sent them a royalty check for…..drum roll….$1.35
which they had to split in 3 because all 3 members of the band co wrote the song
    that is not right.
Young people think music should be free, but they don t realize musicians have to eat and pay the rent, and music instruments and recording gear cost money.
I could write a song, someone could put in you tube without me knowing, and 4 Billion people ( Billion with a B )could watch it on Youtube and I would not get one penny
You tube would make money and internet providers would make money ( because 4 million people watching videos that is a lot of bandwith used ) but the one person who should be making money from the song would not.
that is happening right now and getting worse
our technology is killing other industries not only music but movie making etc etc
    this will end badly

  26. You state your case very well. I also like his music. I believe his anti-oil gig was paid for by some wealthy environmental group. The environmentalists seem to have endless money for this type of propaganda. Young probably thinks he was promoting a good cause and does not realize his reputation was being hijacked by corrupt political manipulators like Tom Steyer.

  27. Shall we discuss the myth of the “student athlete” aka the “amateur athlete” ?
Even the, not so veiled, Olympics movement finally dispatched with all outdated notions of the “amateur athlete” … and welcomed NBA, NHL, etc. players into the Olympics.
It’s time for the NCAA to PAY young black athletes (and white ones) their ACTUAL market value. These hypocritical Socialist Presidents and Provosts need to stop being so personally greedy by exploiting SLAVE labor.

  28. Poor old senile has been, should have retired on a high note when he experienced a moment of clarity and written “Let’s Roll”.

  29. OK I’m back and my ears have stopped gushing blood after I stuck red hot pokers in them, …just in case anybody else falls for Jamie’s trap.

  30. I have always laughed my ass off at Neil Young. He can’t sing, terrible guitarist, and hops around the stage like he has ants in his pants – no sense of rhythm.

  31. LOL !!!
actually C O, this is very true about mr young.
I recollect in the heyday of outdoor rock concerts, the mr young vehemently opposed one that was toooooo near his ginormous PRIVATE estate.
this predates the blogosphere so I cant cite a source.
he was called out on it too, aka hypocrite.

  32. Oh my. She might make it through 2 rounds of cuts on American Idol … then … when it is discovered that she can only (mediocrely) sing ‘Negro spirituals’ like a rich white girl (i.e. with no feeling in her voice) … she will be sent home. Boo hoo.
Hint: Sophie … stick to the straight notes. Don’t bend them or extend them … because you simply do NOT have the talent (or feeling) required for that.
