  1. Psssst….US and Mexico are pretty damn close to a prospective bilateral trade deal. That should probably set off the alarms in Canada since the only way to complete it is to scrap the USMCA.

      1. Thanks for the link. I hadn’t seen that. You don’t realize how absolutely and unshakenly bias the main stream media is (in the US AND Canada) until you notice how obvious their omission of this story is. Mexico is the largest trade partner of the US, and you can’t find a solid story anywhere on how instrumental a US/Mexico agreement would be geo-politically (and not just in this hemisphere).

        I see that Sundance seems to think that Trump set Carney up. I agree…with a caveat. The whole Lake Ontario/ Lake America thing wasn’t done as a personal whim. It was Trump winding up the Carney supporters and getting them so frothing mad, that any capitulation by Carney in the previous negotiations would have been seen as a weakness and repelled his political support. And, guess what? By pulling out of negotiations and refusing to provide sufficient reasons that can be documented, he’s in the same exact place with less leverage than previously. Arrogance can bite you on the posterior when you think you are as “fantastic” as media portrays you to be.

        BTW, when can we expect Carney to list his personal investments? I’d think his questionable negotiating tactics warrant that much disclosure. And, if Canada has some semblance of a Conservative leader they’d be rubbing his face in the mud about now.

          3. In clarification….”Trump” when I use it is short for “The Trump Administration.” You’d have a hard time finding a more clever trio than Howard Ludnick, Scott Bessent, and Jamieson Greer. Those are three guys you don’t want to see on the other side of the poker table.

          4. Trump is smart. There is no question of that. Backing Carney into a corner by pissing off Canadians is brilliant, and Trump, not his advisors, would come up with that.

            Carney coming up with “associate membership” with the EU was also rather clever as it’s an undefined term. It brings the EU into the game which introduces uncertainty in negotiations, which doesn’t help Trump. It also challenges the “Donroe” doctrine, maybe, which further muddies the water.

            I much preferred the old US – Canada negotiating method which was basically “we’ve known each other a long time, maybe it’s time to get a little closer” and then work out a new comfort zone.

        3. My take on this may amuse you. It looks to me that the Americans have decided a set of terms for us starting in the new year, and it’s entirely sensible and we’ve agreed to it and are preparing to benefit from it. But in the meantime we can keep things effectively as they are, while indulging in our passions for performative dance. I believe Carney told Trump quite frankly that he wanted to campaign against him before the year was out, and once he had his mandate the silliness could stop. And I believe that Trump was happy to accommodate him. I associate Trump with TV wrestling. He is quite comfortable with the idea of working together in mutual trusting collaborative construction, and presenting it as murderously hateful confrontation. And he doesn’t mind Carney, indeed he may admire his valet.
