I’ll tell you a little tale. I worked for a small machine shop for a decade, worked for a guy I had grown to respect and care greatly for. Sacrifices had been made to grow the business from less than a million a year in sales all the way to $2.5M+. Then one day he sits me down to tell me he had sold the business to a friend of his, who wanted our shop to be one of the core businesses of a larger operation that was being put together from some deep pocketed oil-sands players. On multiple levels, this concerned me, not least of which was because it appeared to me that my sacrifices had been nullified. One of the other things that was apparent was that my new boss was a known slime ball, on many levels.
Thus began a nightmare of working within an ethical morass that was all-encompassing. The entire company was nothing more than a shell designed to pull money out of the pockets of the shareholders and funnel into the pockets of the coterie of hangers-on that clustered around our CEO. Nobody gave a shit that it was a shell game, until the very end when their paycheques bounced. Of all the people I lost all respect for, seeing my former boss and friend turn into a paper man, worthy of neither respect nor friendship, was the worst. The big money made it all worthwhile for them.

There were many discussions about the future and direction of the company before the sale. I had been hired explicitly to grow the business, and to be made a partner. The sale occurred Agreements that had been in place, were negated by the new owners. Hard won customers were placed on the back burner so that vaporware that had been “invented” by our new CEO could be manufactured and then warehoused. It was ugly. We had a customer that was putting $200K net on to our bottom line was gently pushed out the door because we had better things to make, which we didn’t. We had a local company ask us to do a profitable 7-figure build for them. The CEO pushed them off, because we had drilling rigs to build and sell, even though we had no drilling rigs to build and sell.
The whole charade collapsed when someone absconded with a multi-million dollar deposit on some drilling rigs, and used it to prop up other aspects of the house of cards that had been built.
The bottom line is that someone dangled stupid money, and someone ignored his ethics. That’s what Hollywood is like, apparently.
