IF it were a lie about the U.S. ships being fired upon, it should be remembered that 2 can play at that game.
The Russians could just a easily fire upon KSA or other nation under the same pretenses.
The difference is that the Russians would be unlikely to kill American radar advisors while the Americans probably killed Russians.
