So I opened the radio show last night talking about Trudeau’s UN love in. Can we please get a more critical media on this please? Really that place is not nice.
But starting at the 37:35 mark I get into a story of gun owners being treated like pariahs, specifically CF vet, former sniper, double amputee and Ottawa city councillor Jody Mitic for daring to let the world know he bought some sweet new guns.
Have a listen.

I had to do a double-take on the headline. I thought that it was a two-parter about Trudeau: the first about his being at the UN, and the second talking about how Trudeau was arguing that gun owners shouldn’t be pariahs.
After shaking my head a few times I figured it out. But you had me worried that pot-induced-dementia was striking early.
“”Guns to me are like a hammer to a carpenter. It’s a tool of the trade,” [Jody Mitic] said.
That may be superficially true, but guns are uniquely fetishized in society in a way that few other tools are. Nobody tweats: “I got my wife and I matching #Estwing E3-25SM framers. Because 2 is 1 & 1 is none. #taptaptap #Mjölnir.”
I disagree, kt — lots of tools are fetishized in the same way. Go to any woodworking web forum and you will see the same thing, from the guys using low-end Home Despot-type tools on plywood to the those doing fine work with bespoke hand-crafted infill planes on 300-year-old rare woods reclaimed from peat bogs. Vehicles are fetishized the same way. Computer hardware, mobile devices, recreational vehicles — look and you will find it.
Yup, and nobody tweets about getting them a new set of golf clubs or a tennis racket either.
And if you don’t think people fetishize about other items, just ask my neighbor about his favorite golf driver.
kt, I can understand guns in America,
We are still living under the delusion of our Wild, Wild, West History.
But allowing guns in an intelligent and advanced country like Canada ??
I just don’t think we could stand those kinds of repercussions…./sc
Do we know for sure all those gushing over Trudeau is for real, are they laughing with him or at him?
He sounds weak and shallow when he speaks, it’s hard to detect a sense of strength and security. He’s definitely a curiosity among World leaders. Does that help Canada?
We’ll just ignore the circus with the Obama state dinner, it was high on glitz and fluff, little else accomplished with Obama limping out of his presidency. Trudeau will call upon his ‘infantile’ wisdom to comment on his choice in the presidential election if he hasn’t already.
I take my beloved Taylormade Tour Preferred golf clubs to the course and work on perfecting my game. My son takes his beloved guns to the gravel pit and works at perfecting his clay pigeon shooting. If somebody took away his guns it would be like taking away my golf clubs.
I am aware that the subject of my comment is off topic but I feel that I have to make it anyways. Trudeau’s reasoning behind his decision to make good on the Saudi arms deal is incorrect. A good country such as Canada does not sell arms to such a brutal regime as the one who is currently in power in Saudia Arabia. One has to draw the line somewhere and it seems that our P.M. is failing to use good conscience. The same applies to his view of Red China. The CCP is a blood-thirsty regime and should be dealt with in that light. This is just my understanding.
Like kt and the Liberals, Lenin, Hitler, and Stalin did not like guns in the hands of anyone other than their personal police force and military.
You are aware of course that ‘Golf Courses’ are the deliberate malicious misuse of a perfectly good rifle range.
I liked the comment the other day about Swiss soldiers taking their weapons home when they are discharged. Lowest crime rate in the EU. Most homes have a weapon. Most home owners know how to use them WELL!
What better check against government than this simple idea. I guess I forgot the 2nd Amendment. We don’t have that in Canada. Pity that!
Not sure if we want to emulate Sweden. The rules for civilians are pretty restrictive (if Wikipedia is to be believed):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overview_of_gun_laws_by_nation#Sweden
AMEN to that!
Lickmuffin –yes, people do like their stuff. But while there are communities of like-minded admirers for everything under the sun, there’s also a distinction to be made between even die-hard fandom and object fetishization.
Sure, you can find woodworkers and hobbyists geeking out on online forums, but they’re a relatively small and esoteric crowd. And the same for computer hardware, mobile devices, recreational vehicles, etc. And as Ralph points out, any given person might fetishize any given thing. But I would still argue that, at a societal level, guns are uniquely fetishized to a degree unlike most other objects.
Look at movies, at TV shows, at video games, at the covers and ads in Guns & Ammo. Culturally, guns are portrayed as far more than just “tools of the trade” — they’re symbolic objects, imbued with power and meanings that go well beyond their physical form and function (and no, I’m not claiming that violent movies or video games lead to real-life violence — I’m just talking about how guns are revered in our cultural media). Historically, cars (and their promise of freedom, independence, the open road) are probably among the few other objects that are comparable to guns today in terms of their mythical status in the American imagination, and even then, I’d say the latter has overtaken it.
Anyway, to be clear, I don’t object or really even care about either Jody Mitic’s tweet or his ownership of guns. I just think the “guns are mundane tools of the trade, like hammers and golf clubs” argument is either naive or disingenuous.
All that gushing is most definitely phony. They are working hard to build up Trudeau’s image, but he is an empty vessel. He is being used to push the UN Sustainable Development agenda.
Yeah kt
They are symbolic of freedom.
And i will gladly be the first one in here to say what everyone else is probably thinking. I have no compunction about shooting someone in the face to defend myself and no i am not a psycho with a fetishized fantacy, i am just not a willing victim, a gun is just a very efficent way of defending yourself from a ____________ , and yes a tyrannical gov, and other idiots like you in society.
Here is a fun fact for the day.
If we banned liberals, and muslims from owning guns the “work place violence and school shootings would drop 100% also another shocking fact all mass shootings have been in “gun free zones” So whatever you think about guns my opinion is this if you dont like guns ….dont buy one.
“So I opened the radio show last night talking about Trudeau’s UN love in. Can we please get a more critical media on this please?”
Heck, how about no media attention at all?
The UN is a dead end. By “re-engaging” with it, the new government is merely confirming it is all show and no action when I comes to “Global Affairs”.
Yeah, a few years back, when I golfed, went into the local Golf World or whatever the hell it was called, looking for a decent set of graphite clubs. The salesman started by showing me a $1200 driver that he said would improve my game immensely.
All told, my set would have cost about $6000, without the bag and cart. I thanked him politely for all his great advice and left.
For that kind of money I would want to be able to play like Tiger Woods, and get all the hot women, too!
And as far as fetishizing goes, ever shop at one of the trendy new shoe stores for a simple pair of comfortable shoes? You can’t just buy a pair of shoes, you have to have a specialized pair now, “will it be for jogging, walking, power walking, hiking, tennis,?” No, I just want pair of g*ddamned shoes that are comfortable to walk in!
The salesman looked at me as though I was demented.
I hate having to say this to the nervous-about-anything crowd, but a hunting rifle is just a tool. It isn’t a “weapon” as the anti-gun nuts call it,unless some maniac who’s off his meds decides to use it as one.
If we were to look at every potential “weapon” out there, we’d have to close all the Home Depots,Ronas,Canadian Tires, Princess Autos, and quite a few others,as those stores are loaded with items you could use to kill people.
There’s nothing like a liter of gasoline and a bic to ruin someone’s day.
When I saw the headline,I also thought,”Trudeau is speaking our FOR us gun owners”?!!
Damned near had heart failure.
MacKay: “Where in God’s name does this prime minister think we’ve been?”
“It’s time for Canada to step up once again,” Trudeau said, adding later, it was time to choose “engagement over isolation.” That kind of talk had Peter MacKay, a potential leadership candidate to succeed Harper and a former foreign affairs minister himself, shaking his head. “It does rub a lot of people the wrong way,” MacKay said.
“My initial reaction to that was what a slap in the face to our foreign service and our U.N. staff and personnel who have been based there under our government for almost a decade doing yeoman’s service on behalf of our country.”
“And — I got to be honest, — especially as a previous foreign minister, when I hear the phrase ‘Canada is back’, I can’t help but wonder aloud where in God’s name does this prime minister think we’ve been? I know where we’ve been. We’ve been in Afghanistan, we’ve been involved in efforts in Africa and other troubled parts of the world.”

A better question might be, where has Justin been. Oh and the Security Council, look at the wise sages at CBC, adding up the third world goodies taxpayers will have to cough up; but let’s be nice with Ruskies and not nice with the Israelis. Sure just a minor tweak – ditching Israel:
“The new Liberal government may also need to modify some of the tough language the previous government deployed against Russia and on behalf of Israel if it wants to play the mediator role that such a seat requires, one observer added.”
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/un-security-council-1.3494537
Oh and remember when our dollar was “artificially high?” Now it’s apparently “in the comfortable range.” How comfortable should we be with $30b and growing deficit? This vacuous taxaction gong show is picking up steam. Isn’t there some conference somewhere we can send Justin to, so he can reflect on his personal genius narrative?
American Traitor John Kerry signed the UN Small Arms Control Treaty a few years ago while a UN scumball looked on More reasons for america to totaly pull out of the evil United Nations
If the House of Saud places a 15 billion dollar order for crowd control equipment how many conservatives will reject the order?
“…a hunting rifle is just a tool. It isn’t a “weapon” as the anti-gun nuts call it…”
Tell that to the deer.
Of course a hunting rifle constitutes a weapon — it’s the very definition of one: “A thing designed or used for inflicting bodily harm or physical damage” (oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/weapon). That doesn’t mean it’s not also a tool, and a useful one at that. But let’s not pretend it’s something other than what it is.
“If we were to look at every potential “weapon” out there, we’d have to close all the Home Depots,Ronas,Canadian Tires, Princess Autos, and quite a few others,as those stores are loaded with items you could use to kill people.
Yes, but unlike hammers, axes, chainsaws, tire irons, gasoline, or ballpoint pens for that matter, firearms are (with limited specialized exceptions) designed explicitly as weapons. You can use a hammer to either drive a nail or cave in a skull, but have you ever tried to frame a house with a Benelli?
Yeah, they know they can use him, that’s what’s behind all the smiles. They have a real tool in Trudeau.
The above comment was in reply to LindaL at 11:42am.
Funny I thought a tool like yourself would more readily recognize your peers.
Tool.
A weapon is not a tool first.?
You, whatever you be, are a fool.
Every grain farmer has a varmint rifle behind the seat in their pickup.
A tool for thinning varmints
Same tool is often used to put grain fed beef on the table.
And put down sick or dying animals.
Very same tool can be used to deter human predators or cure their foolish ways.
By your own definition””A thing designed or used for inflicting bodily harm or physical damage” covers every implement ever made by man.
I suppose you believe, Guns kill people?
Seems to be a natural belief of the irresponsible progressive.
Tools do nothing without a human operator.
Is this why you accomplish so little?
“A weapon is not a tool first.?”
Here’s what I actually said: “That doesn’t mean [a hunting rifle] is not also a tool, and a useful one at that.”
Which was in reply to Don Morris’ claim that “a hunting rifle is just a tool. It isn’t a “weapon”…”
Please read more carefully in the future.
hey kt….telling a deer a gun is a tool is like telling you an armed society is a polite society!!
Both in the headlights. You are truly going to regret your position one day probably towards the end of your life as in a few decades muslims will takeover the west and women like you will have no one and no way to defend yourself. The government will not be what it is today it will be vastly different. Darei say tyrannical once the muslims out breed the rest of us in canada yes canada they will destroy democracy by using it to bring themselves and the sharia to bethe law of the land once in power they will rape and pilage as they see fit.
And people like you will wonder how it could happen why people do these things how could muslims ever be this way as 99% of them are peaceful and just want to hold hands with the kuffirs and infidels and sing kumbyallah!!!

Maybe you could learn to express yourself better.
I stand by my comment,
Tool. Don Morris is correct, a hunting rifle is designed just so.
A weapon, purpose built for inter human exchanges, has a few extra features, many of which make it impractical for everyday use.
Guns are not the problem idiots with guns are.
Only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun – like the police do – or yourself when their not around.
You do realize that Swiss are not from … Sweden.
“Yes, but unlike hammers, axes, chainsaws, tire irons, gasoline, or ballpoint pens for that matter, firearms are (with limited specialized exceptions) designed explicitly as weapons. You can use a hammer to either drive a nail or cave in a skull,
And yet amazingly enough for each round fired with an intention to harm tens (hundreds?) of millions are fired for recreation.
“but have you ever tried to frame a house with a Benelli?”
But have you ever tried skeet shooting?
I smell a “sensible, common sense, concern troll”.
Is that like “Austrians are not from Australia”
I’d venture to guess that more guns in Canada shoot paper and ‘tin can’ targets than the number used “explicitly as weapons”.
kt >
Yea, well kt, most of us here do own guns, and will always own guns. So f*ck off and worry about your own things – they’re going nowhere.
For the rest of the gun owners commenting here, you don’t need to explain yourself or firearms to the likes of kt. Not only are they incapable of listening or rationalizing the benefits of firearm ownership, dig deep into their private lives and you open a whole new can of worms.
I also do not like the Saudi regime. But here is my view:
“Trudeau’s reasoning to buy Saudi oil is incorrect. A good country such as Canada does not buy oil from such a brutal regime as the one who is currently in power in Saudia Arabia. One has to draw the line somewhere and it seems that our P.M. is failing to use good conscience.”
It is not even a guess, it is a most obvious truth. I alone punch more holes in paper targets in a month than Canadians die from all gun related causes in a year.
Oh KT, I missed the best use of these tools.
Improving,up keeping my hand eye coordination.
These are not weapons, they are fitness tools.
Which you would know if you ever got off your couch and went hunting.
Infinitely superior to a gym membership.
