Why not just check the receipts? What the hell do they teach at J-School today?
When you do the math each individual charge was for $8,000 and no one noticed!
Nothing will happen to the TTC employees.
Jon – it appears the receipts issued by Healthy Fit looked legit. Problem was, often the transit employee never received the goods. However, there were apparently other receipts which had inflated prices for goods received by the employee. These ones, perhaps, should have been caught. But you would need an employee at the insurance place who was really au courant with prices of a fair few items.
I would love to hear next that CRA is auditing Healthy Fit, it’s employees, and the doctor who was apparently prescribing all these goods. Also the transit employees involved. Fraud is like moth: it doesn’t break out in just one place.
As mentioned above by Dave, $4 million paid out to two stores for five hundred employees and nobody saw a problem until some whistle-blower alerted them, looks to me that part of the problem is in the ineptitude in the upper management of both the TTC and Manulife. This is an example of what is endemic across most of society, a microcosm of what has happened in Greece. Union employees paying for benefits under an insurance clause and then thinking that because they are paying for benefits they become entitled to everything that they can get their hands on and then some. Management washing their hands of the claims since it is the insurance company that is on the hook and the insurance company that pays out because they’ll just increase the payments at the next contract. Everybody wins except the poor honest schmuck that pays the union dues, pays the premiums, pays the taxes and then feels guilty at making an honest claim knowing that he really hasn’t paid the cost of the full bill. Extrapolate this example over the entire economy and you can imagine the results…. Oh wait we don’t need to imagine we have Greece!
