Until I was about 15 years old I spoke French only, and a mistake I used to make often in the beginning ( and that I still make ) and that I see many somewhat bilingual French quebecers make, is to use the English words they know – and sometimes they have quite a good vocabulary – but in a French structured sentence.
It is relatively easy to learn new words in a second language but not so easy to learn how to build sentences that are grammatically and “culturally” correct.
I have been “fluent” in English for over 30 years but I still tend to say things the French way such as “the car blue” – which is how we would say it in French ” l’auto bleue ” instead of “the blue car” because my brain has been to an extent programmed as a young child to “think” in the French language.
There was a text from Daily Kos about Israel’s 60th that was mentioned here a couple days ago, and someone said – and I agree – that it looked like a translation from another language because of the way things were said – not the words, they were all good English – but the structure and the strange combination of words.
So I think Hassan despite his relatively good English vocabulary is still “thinking” in his mother tongue and that explains why he expresses himself that way.
