I have heard of these studies alleging that the brain functions etc support gender reassignment theories. Without continuing hormone therapy the alleged reassignment shows the original sexual charecteristics. So without ongoing treatment this illusion will not be supported by the body. Is this not a case of delusion being supported by the medical establishment so as to provide another income stream, not to mention the required ongoing therapy. We the taxpayers and insurance clients support this delusion with out payments. Why not treat this mental illness as: dare we say, mental illness! The head MD at Johns Hopkins reassignment clinic said that this whole program has been a tragic mistake, and that the results have been unsatisfatory for all involved. If you want to sex while pretending to be someone or something else, more power to you! Just don’t expect me to pay for it. The poor sad creatures I have met during or after this “medical” treatment were uniformly unhappy before during and after the process. You see it turns out that society really does not care about your feelings and artificial body parts do not change that. I am well aware of the problems of speaking in other languages. That includes French-English and English-French (I lived in Quebec for over 15 years). There are far more clues to the lack of fluency in the ‘other language’ – which include the far more important use of definitives. Hassan knows how to use them.

Bart, I believe you’re missing my point. You are probably correct in saying the secondary physical characteristics will revert if hormone replacement therapy stops, but what I was saying was that “there is a difference between male and female brains”. And it is possible to have a “female” brain in a “male” body. In an earlier post I made here I put in a few references that may interest you. These are from respectable main stream medical publications where articles are peer reviewed before being accepted for publication. “Trade mags for doctors” would be the best discription… and the magazines title, volume number, and page the article is on are listed so you could go read it for yourelf. This isn’t from some rag Al Gore could get published in. These are serious articles where the real scientists publish their papers.

So, do you still say it’s a mental illness? If so, I sure hope you don’t say it near a woman, because you are saying all females are mentally ill! (grin)
My point is still that if someone with a female brain in a male body wishes to take steps to make the body fit the brain, I’ve got no problem with it. And I will treat them as they wish to be treated. They might be the ugliest darn females I’ve seen, but heck, I’m no prize either, so I sure won’t cast the first stone.
But I still think that the Ontario (Lieberal) government should put it’s priorities in the proper order and fund eye care and chiro care before spending any money on sex changes.

Having transcribed a couple of these kinds of operative reports (years ago), it’s more of a “fillet, splay, tuck, and trim” kind of thing.

I’d like to point you to an interesting paper that speaks to your point about genetics.
Quoting a part of what you said; “They may cosmetically look like a good female impersonator but the mental hardwiring, life experiences which differ radically for Men or Women, let alone the genetic makeup that will be male no matter what they do.”

Here are a few excerpts from the paper…
“typically, an XY baby, showing the external characteristics of a boy (male phenotype) will grow to adulthood identifying himself as a man. Similarly, an XX baby, showing the external characteristics of a girl (female phenotype) will typically grow up comfortably identifying herself as a woman.”
