It’s all about money.
While I was teaching, I was “encouraged” to pass as many students as possible, even if it meant lowering standards. You see, the more people graduated from that institution, and our department in particular, the more “gravy” money the government gave us.
Oh, we always got enough funding to ensure that we could keep the lights on, but it was that extra loot that gave a department head bragging rights because that department could afford the latest bells, whistles, and frou-frous. Having those items added to the prestige of the department and, thereby, elevated its status not only in the institution but with potential students as well. I mean, who wants to study in a place that can’t afford the latest gadgetry-du-jour, eh?
So what if they can’t spell or coherently present their ideas, I was told. What’s important that they all got “good jobs” because their employers will teach them what they needed to know. Just crank out those diplomas and things will be fine. (Uh-huh…..)
It didn’t help that the last department head was anxious for promotion, seeing himself as eventually becoming dean. Anything which made him look good to the senior administration was allowed and a high “success” rate helped him a lot.
I don’t think that thinking was restricted just to the institution I was associated with.
That is a sad commentary. Being paid to not teach.
What can be said? The idiocy just keeps piling up. Stupid people will never make an adequate living and failing to teach them something, anything makes it even worse.

They can always get jobs as journalists at major “news” organizations. Spelling and grammar skills appear to be unnecessary; only a lust for drafting leftist propaganda.

FYI … this is what ‘Common Core’ is ALL about. About ‘leveling’ the scholastic playing field between whites/Asians … and every other browner-skinned person in the USA who didn’t grow up with the privilege of a mother and father who read books to them as a child. Who grew up in an intact family that prized EDUCATION above all else. A family who INVESTED in their children as the MOST meaningful legacy in life.
