Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Holy hell, woman. When you send someone traffic, you send someone TRAFFIC.My hosting provider thought I was being DDoSed. - Sean McCormick
"The New York Times link to me yesterday [...] generated one-fifth of the traffic I normally get from a link from Small Dead Animals." - Kathy Shaidle
"You may be a nasty right winger, but you're not nasty all the time!" - Warren Kinsella
"Go back to collecting your welfare livelihood." - Michael E. Zilkowsky
Brilliant…so this stuff is useless in a time of disaster. Well except for the portable genset.
a portable generator is just as useless without fuel
So you stock up on fuel,DUH.
Best comment….the Kennedy’s should stick to bootlegging, which they were good at.Heh.
Would that they throw the switch while standing in a bucket of water.
It only took me about 25 seconds of reading the excerpt from the op-ed to understand that this was nothing more than David Crane endorsing his own company. Leave it to an a$$hole democrat to try to profit from a disaster by selling his snake oil BS.
Worst case scenario…gas is easier to find than a grid.
you could set up with the ability to isolate your system from the grid, and even do it within code, it’s just not worth it. Just bought a 5.5 kva genset and still have the “extention cord” distribution system, so we’r good to go just in case. As to the fools in here mewling about gas, I keep my truck brimming in the winter time, and know how to use a mexican credit card:-)))
Electical stupid, don’t leave out licenced electricians, as I’v had to point out their stupidity on severall occations in the last few years!!!!
It’s a safety feature called 100% shut off, as in a gas appliance…as soon as the power is disrupted the pilot light shuts off so it doesn’t keep spewing fuel because well…it’s highly flammable.
I’ve spent my life around the sun, moon, stars and atmosphere. That makes me an astrophysicist with a minor in meteorology. Jeepers, where do these bozos get their chutzpa? I’d be embarrassed.
I’ll take the gas powered generator. You can buy and store fuel. At worst, you can beg, borrow or steal it. With solar or wind you are at the mercy of nature. I suppose you could try a pagan sun dance or sacrifice a chicken to Gaia but I wouldn’t bet my families safety on that.
It’s also safe to fly airplanes at night you’re not checked out on stoned with a broken leg.
Don’t tell the Kennedy’s they shouldn’t mess with live wires in a rainstorm.
” Robert F. Kennedy Jr., also failed the bar exam in 1982 and resigned as an assistant district attorney amid charges of drug abuse. He entered a drug treatment program, received a suspended sentence and probation, and eventually was admitted to the bar in 1985.
Kennedy, the only son of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, has been named the nation’s “sexiest hunk” in several popularity polls. A bachelor who lives quietly in an apartment on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, he patronizes some of the city’s trendiest restaurants and nightspots in the company of generally unidentified young women, but he has also been linked with Madonna, Daryl Hannah and Julia Roberts.”

Of course back-up generators are a good idea, that’s why I have one. Without fuel they’re as useless as a solar panel at night.
The important lesson is to be prepared, not like the idiots in NYC who had to stand in lines for hours to get a few gallons of petrol.
…as for someone who suggests stealing fuel:
Can you outrun a 125gr FMJ coming at you at 1000fps?
In a disaster situation it’s called looting. Folks around here firmly believe in ‘shoot, shovel, & shut-up’
You can beg, borrow, or steal gasoline but I’ve read that there have been people who have exchanged sexual favours for fuel because of storm Sandy.
Word around the campfire is that SaskPower will install an isolator so you can safely hook your generator to your house panel.
I don’t know the details, but it makes sense, they don’t want you electrocuting their linemen when they’re tryng to restore the power.
north O 60
1000 fps????you hunt with an air rifle?????
U can buy air rifles with 1200fps, me, I’d use 120 gr 3800fps….243….great for deer and not bad for McStupid:-)))
Subsonic handgun rounds. They make less noise, and don’t tend to over-penetrate. They’re easy to make with wheel weights instead of using FMJ as an option.
Actually the worst fuel to store is gasoline, the volatile elements in the mixture evaporate leaving a tank full of fuel that won’t ignite in a cold engine and a gummed up carburetor. If you have a gas generator, run it once a month for 20 minutes and change the fuel every three months.
Diesel fuel can be stored for a long time with no degradation which is why all industrial back-up generators use it. Propane lasts forever, I have a propane tank from the Icestorm in ’98 that is fueling my new barbecue. I am going to upgrade my portable generator this winter with a tri-fuel conversion kit so I can run the generator on propane with gasoline as a backup.
Kits are sold by propane-generators.com, if you’re interested.
We had a meeting at work with the company based in Ronkonkoma, Long Island, NY, that provides our maintenance program recently. They told us that their back-up generators worked perfectly after Sandy, but the tanks only held enough fuel for 72hrs. They were able to get the tanks filled once, from a local gas station a few blocks away but the gas station ran dry on the fourth day and fallen trees, washed out roads and powerlines blocking the roads prevented any fuel trucks from coming in until the sixth day, when they received a fuel delivery with hours to spare. The problem was that on the fourth day all three Internet providers failed because their backup generators had no fuel. At the same time the generators at the cell phone towers ran out too, so there were no phones. Don’t plan on just going to the local gas station for more fuel if there is a big catastrophe.
NME666, I think North of 60 was referring to a pistol bullet, judging by the weight and velocity he quoted I’d say 9mm or .38Special
Heh. South of the 60th would last about 2 secs trying to get fuel down south.Got enough for 13 months. Will share with those worth it.
Don’t know about the other dude but there’s plenty of evidence the brain isn’t the strongest organ among the Kennedy clan.
These rich clowns “overlooked” that one major reason a lot of these power lines come down in storms is the usual
suspects don’t want “aggressive trimming and removal” of tree branches and entire old trees near the old power lines.
Nor do they want installation of “unsightly” new style power line systems using taller poles.
The power companies don’t need the aggravation of a bunch of old and new money ignorant greeny b*stards constantly
giving them grief so they are content to cut up the fallen trees and replace the systems as they get knocked down.
