Y2Kyoto: I Miss The Poley Bears
In related melting, Regina, Saskatchewan saw a scattering of snowflakes yesterday. However, none survived contact with the thousands upon thousands of acres lying submerged under global warming.
Bumped for road carnage update! Midale, SK is not a happy place these days.
(It was warm and dry in Fargo, though, Thanks once again to the guest bloggers for helping out in past and coming weeks as Venus and I continue her swath of canine destruction throughout Canada and the US .)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Embattled Rep. Anthony Weiner admitted to posting lewd photos of himself on Twitter at a Monday afternoon press conference.
While addressing the media at the Sheraton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan, Weiner made the following statement: “Last Friday night I tweeted a photograph of myself that I intended to send as direct message as part of a joke to a woman in Seattle. Once I realized I posted it to Twitter, I panicked, I took it down and said that I had been hacked. I then continued with that story to stick to that story which was a hugely regrettable mistake.”
“I am so sorry to have disrupted her life in this way. To be clear, the picture was of me and I sent it. I am deeply sorry for the pain this has caused my wife Huma and our family, and my constituents, my friends, supporters and staff. In addition over the past few years I have engaged in several inappropriate conversations conducted over Twitter, Facebook, email, and occasionally on the phone with women I have met online. I have exchanged messages and photos of an explicit nature with about six women over the last three years. For the most part, these communications took place before my marriage, though some have sadly took place after. To be clear, I have never met any of these women or have had any physical relationships at any time.”
Weiner also said he would not resign and that he did not believe that he did anything that broke the law.

Ottoman Fantasies
Michael Totten asks Claire Berlinski; “What is going on with the Turkish government?”
They are zealots, perhaps, but not quite in the way their critics are imagining. They’re zealots of delusional optimism and overconfidence. They have sincerely convinced themselves that they will be able to befriend Iran, dissuade it from going nuclear, and profit greatly from this relationship in the process. They refuse to entertain the idea that the Iranians view them as useful idiots.
Mother Corpse’s True Mentality
Remember, this is from the CBC’s senior business correspondent for The National and co-host of the Lang & O’Leary Exchange:
I broke the rules to spend beyond my means
…
I was posted to New York at the age of 28 as a business journalist, and intended to live within the somewhat modest means of a newspaper correspondent. And I stuck to my guns, for at least six months. Then I abandoned my guns, hopped over the wall into no man’s land, went AWOL. And in retrospect I’m glad I did, because the investment in my career and the experiences were worth more than the thousands of dollars I figure it cost me…
My new friends liked to dine out (most people I knew in New York used their oven as additional storage space) and pretty soon we were traveling too. Italy, Spain, Italy, the Hamptons, Italy. We travelled together, and an Italian villa back then was a steal — I was practically saving money by going.
Within a few years, I was rich in experience, a billionaire in sights and sounds, a queen of couture. And tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt. The lowest moment, financially speaking, was when I cashed in my RRSP — paid a huge chunk of tax on it, lost the compounding potential, and used the money to pay off a credit card. Or most of it…
Was it a mistake? On a straight math basis yes. It was foolish. But would I do the same thing over again? In a New York minute…
Entitled to her…
The Decline And Fall Of The American Empire
For a few years, Mike Haege’s sister lived in north Minneapolis. He knows the neighborhood at least a little bit, and when a tornado tore through the area on Sunday, May 22, he took notice.
On the news he saw trees strewn about lawns and streets. Then inspiration struck. He wanted to help. His schedule for Monday, May 23, was wide open. And, since he operates Custom Cut, a tree trimming business here, he figured his services could be put to good use.
“I thought it would be the perfect chance to help,” he said. “I knew there would be people needing help.”
[…]
What happened next shocked Haege.

It’s Probably Nothing
China has dropped 97 percent of its holdings in U.S. Treasury bills, decreasing its ownership of the short-term U.S. government securities from a peak of $210.4 billion in May 2009 to $5.69 billion in March 2011, the most recent month reported by the U.S. Treasury.

Looking back through the first century of the motion picture business, are there any composers more prolific than John Williams and Irving Berlin? What a vast array of memorable music they provided us!
Update: Gord Tulk has filled in a big blank in my movie musical history knowledge with Elmer Bernstein. Megaera did the same with Jerry Goldsmith.

Dennis Miller: The Left’s Hatred for Sarah Palin
This past week Dennis Miller went through a light-hearted but interesting analysis of the upcoming U.S. Presidential race, especially focusing on Sarah Palin.
While you might not be a fan of Palin’s, isn’t it a truly beautiful thing how she gets the “geniuses” on the Left so incredibly riled up?
Perhaps a page should have stuck to her, er, knitting
Kelly McParland Eviscerates a 21 Year Old Narcissist
Now more simple reality:
…
The Canadian Senate Page Program: Each year, fifteen university students from across Canada are selected to participate in the program – one of the most sought-after privileges available to university students. “Under the direction of the Usher of the Black Rod, these leaders of tomorrow are given a remarkable opportunity to be leaders of today.”
Brigette DePape: The 21-year-old graduate from the University of Ottawa made headlines for holding up a protest sign that read ‘Stop Harper’ at the start of the Throne Speech: “This country needs a Canadian version of an Arab Spring.” DePape has since received several job offers and is considering taking a position with the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
Hamza Ali al-Khateeb: A 13-year-old Syrian boy who tagged along at an antigovernment protest in the town of Saida a few weeks ago, was arrested, was burned, beaten, lacerated and given electroshocks. His jaw and kneecaps were shattered. He was shot in both arms. When his father saw the state of Hamza’s body, he passed out…
But Harper must be stopped; up DePape’s self-promoting…:
Quel courage. Quelle lèse majesté.
Indoctrination by Teachers
Ann McElhinney, famous for her films “Not Evil Just Wrong” and “Mine Your Own Business”, gives a heartfelt speech about how children are being indoctrinated by teachers:
Towards the end of the clip she references The Story of Stuff (vomit alert).
Kelly McParland Eviscerates a 21 Year Old Narcissist
A brilliant follow-up to yesterday’s well discussed posting here on SDA was just published by Kelly McParland in the National Post. He so beautifully destroys the entitlement mentality, selfishness, totalitarian mindset, and hypocrisy that seems ever present in Radical Leftists these days.
Here’s a sampling of what should be a Must Read column for all Canadians who don’t fully understand the concept of democracy:
Ms. DePape is a recent graduate of the University of Ottawa, that bastion of free speech, where they shout down speakers who hold views they don’t like. She took classes in “international development and globalization,” where they teach you about the West’s cruel failure to adequately support less fortunate nations while plotting ways to exploit their labour. Fair trade coffee is free at the door.
They must not have reached the part of the course where they learn about democracy. Or perhaps Ms DePape missed that day, skipping classes to strap herself to the stack of a coal-fired power plant. Democracy is a system in which people get together and vote on who they wish to elect as a government. The party with the most votes wins. Recently, Canada had an election, in which almost 15 million votes were cast for 19 parties, some of which even held views similar to Ms. De Pape’s. The Conservative party won by quite a wide margin. The NDP, a party which considers itself “progressive,” also did quite well.
This afternoon Roy Green spoke with McParland about his column. You can listen to it here.
Newsweek: 0 Grand Rapids: 1,000
In a recent article, Newsweek magazine declared Grand Rapids, Michigan to be one of the Top Ten dying cities in America. The people of Grand Rapids, inspired by one of their native sons, Rob Bliss, had a very different opinion and set out to prove how incredibly wrong Newsweek was. They all got together and created this incredible “LipDub” video (watch full-screen & in HD for full effect) :
The video was posted last Thursday and went viral soon after. The following day Dennis Miller interviewed the fledgling director, Rob Bliss. In one of his funniest quotes ever, Miller said: “Newsweek telling you you’re a dying city is like you visiting Moscow and Lenin sits up in his tomb and says you look a little pale!”
For those not aware, last year Newsweek was sold. The price? Just $1.00. I expect it’s worth even less now!
For those interested in visiting Grand Rapids, much more information can be found at ExperienceGR.com.
The Selective Moral Outrage of the Leftist Mind
Whether it be financial institutions or civil defense or foreign wars or health care or immigration or a whole host of other things, the corrupt & hypocritical Leftist Mind will praise the actions of “progressive” politicians but condemn those of conservative ones … even though the actions may be absolutely identical!
In a stellar new piece, Victor Davis Hanson outlines example after example of this in America. Here’s a snippet:
There is a vast machinery of selective liberal outrage, fueled and lubricated by the media, universities, and celebrity entertainment. When the redistributive welfare state starts to run out of money, the gears and pulleys are flipped on and shrill charges of greed, cruelty, nativism, and racism spew out of the production line. The machine sputters and shuts down when an aggrieved liberal suddenly must either make cuts or adapt the very policies that he used to damn. Understand the mechanics of selective outrage, and our upside-down politics becomes comprehensible . . . .

Profile of a Real Hero: Dr. Sakena Yacoobi
Too often in Canada self-proclaimed blowhards pump themselves up to be brave heroic figures. In truth though, they’re just narcissistic phonies. Their actions pose no threat to their personal safety. In fact, often their actions help to pad their stature amongst the Far Left crowd they’re so desperate to please. Here’s one recent example. Here’s another. And here’s yet one more.
In contrast to the faux heroism, yesterday Roy Green interviewed a real hero named Sakena Yacoobi. You can read more about her here. May Dr. Yacoobi set a high bar for others to strive for!

Mentioned the other day by SDA regular Derek was this extended version of the Molson “I Am Canadian” anthem. And, as an added bonus for SDA readers, is a little something I created, combining hi-res photos of Canucks fans around downtown Vancouver, along with Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man” in the background. Hoping both help to cheer on a Canadian team’s victory in the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs tonight!

“It thus came as no surprise when Obama declared war on Fox News. Through David Axelrod and Rahm Emmanuel the administration warned Democratic consultants not to appear on Fox.”
Meanwhile:
“Obama extended a hand of friendship to the Al Jazeera network, granting a previously denied visa to the network’s director general Wadah Khanfar”
“Al Jazeera under Khanfar’s leadership descended to new depths of depravity when the network threw a birthday party for released terrorist Samir Kuntar, who had killed 4-year-old Israeli girl Einat Haran by bashing her head with a rifle butt after murdering her father in front of her.”

Europe: Kickin’ the Ball Down the Road
Imagine two kids passing a soccer ball back & forth as they slowly walk down a country road. They come over a gentle rise when the road suddenly takes a sharp dip downwards. About half a kilometre ahead though they discover that an earthquake has caused a huge chasm in the road, making it impossible for them to cross.
This is a useful metaphor to envision the terrible economic crisis that Europe is facing in the next few years and possibly even sooner. It’s very clear where things are heading but weak-kneed politicians, not wanting to displease the electorate, refuse to do anything serious about it and just keep kicking the ball down the road. Eventually though, there will be no more road ahead.
In this podcast, the BBC’s Peter Day colourfully fills in the detail of the situation.
